Janis Joplin was a one of a kind singer with a unique voice. Sadly we lost her too soon. She was only 27 when she died. She had a lot of great songs such as "Me & Bobby McGee", "Cry Baby", "Down On Me", "Maybe", "Little Girl Blue", "Try (Just A Little Bit Harder)", "Get It While You Can", "Bye, Bye Baby", "Move Over", "Mercedes Benz" etc.

The one and only. She was a stick of dynamite. That incredible powerhouse voice coming from that little bitty girl. The first Queen of Soul. - "Piece of my Heart" - "Little Girl Blue" - "Work me Lord" - "Maybe" - "Ball and Chain" RIP, dear Janis

I like your (and others') reactions best when you let the emotion in. Watching and hearing someone do this is, to me, anyway, a powerful emotional thing. Did you feel it?

Watching people experiencing things for the first time, that I experienced as a little girl at my father’s knee, is so evocative! My father wanted me to understand just how amazing Janis was, and I hated her music at first. At around 11/12 (?) there was a PBS special on, and he had me watch one of her performances featured in it, with him. I finally understood his deep and abiding love for her music.

Me & Bobby McGee which was written by Kris Kristofferson, the man who can do anything: military pilot, Rhodes Scholar, recruited to teach English Lit at West Point, and disowned by his family when he gave that up to follow his dream in Nashville where he swept floors and finally landed a helicopter in Johnny Cash's yard to get his attention. Kris went on to sing, act and write some of the most beautiful and emotionally intelligent lyrics of his time. He wrote Bobby McGee which has been covered by many but Janis may have made it No. 1 first. Help Me Make It Through the Night and Sunday morning Coming Down are awesome Kris K. songs.

"me & bobby mcgee" was written by an absolute legend - kris kristoffersen - janis learned it in secret to surprise him with (they were friends, they dated, they were friends). she recorded it for her band's next album. and then she died. that night was the first time kristoffersen heard her version. and he knew it would forever belong to her

I suggest that you now go for a COMPLETELY different version of "Summertime", but equally sublime and a great classic rendition: the 1958 (yes, 66 years ago!) version by Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong. I still get chills, goosebumps, and electric shocks every time Ella's voice comes in. Every. Time!

Shortly after my parents married they moved to Houston. They actually met her at a couple of parties. My somewhat conservative dad didn't like her, he thought she was "too forward " with men. My mom was always the less judgemental of the two.
