Huge hit when I was a kid. Mini skirts were in. And it was an era when women without a husband, particularly widowed or divorced, were not able to get a loan, were scrutinized miserably and judged constantly by "the establishment."" Their version of her life wasn't necessarily correct. It was town gossip. She may have had a drink somewhere and the gossips turned it into utter debauchery. I remember growing up with people sniping about this person and that person and oh, they wore the wrong thing or said the wrong thing or were the wrong church or job or whatever. This song knocked that attitude out of the park and it hit a hone run with the public.

I remember in the 50s the PTA informed my mother that I wouldn't be allowed in the Girl Scouts because mother had been married 3 times. I so wanted to join and be a part of something. Mother had saved up and bought my Girl Scout uniform and she was so hurt for me. I felt sad for her. She had sacrificed to buy that outfit. The school felt like I would be a bad influence on the other girls because of mothers marriage history.

The age old story of people in glass houses throwing stones. The youthful widowed mother, who was simply a free-spirited, free-thinking and self-reliant woman, ran a foul of the self-serving hypocrites in the little "Peyton Place" town where she and her daughter were living, and her response to their own "indiscretions."
@smv4usa Жыл бұрын
It was "Hatin' Place", as in they "hated" her for being different.
@PKD821 Жыл бұрын
It was actually “Peyton Place” in the song. Peyton Place was initially a book, then a movie, then a tv soap opera during the 50s and 60s. It showcased the hypocrisy and small-mindedness people could display to one another in small towns. This song came out in the 60s when everyone would have understood the reference to Peyton Place as meaning a small town filled with hateful people.
@greeneyelove2003 Жыл бұрын
That's why this song is so loved - we've all be judged by people, and we all wish we could spill the tea as she did and put them in their place. I attended a church where the assistant preacher's wife was always approaching people and making comments until one day, another woman looked at her and said, "Let's talk about what your kids do on the weekends." She shut down fast like, because there is a lot of truth to the saying that preacher's kids are some of the worst behaved and hers were hellions.

She went out and drank with her male and female friends (in the movie), which would get no notice if she had been a man while her detractors enjoyed their dirty secrets. Her real crime was indiscretion because she wasn't ashamed of anything she was doing, unlike them. I grew up in the same type of community, only in the Midwest instead of the South.

First you have to understand this was the 70s. Mini skirts and go go boots were the fashion. Just because she's a widow doesn't mean she was looking for a husband. The 70s saw the birth of women's lib. Finally this is about Small Town USA. I grew up in Small Town USA. Your business is everyone's business - they think. Anyway I've always loved this song.
