SRV did not mentor Healey. Even SRV thought that was a funny rumour. Stevie Ray and Albert Collins discovered Jeff in a club in Toronto. I used to see Jeff around the Toronto jazz jam scene. Because of contract obligations, he couldn't play guitar without his management getting paid. So he played cornet, and he was just as good a horn player as he was on guitar.

A great Canadian talent gone too soon - and one hell of a blues/rock guitar player. Jeff went blind as a child (about age 1, thanks to Anthony Davies for the correction) and he learned to play the guitar on his lap because when he started, he was too small to hold it properly. He can shred with the best of them - if you enjoy this, you should check out him and Stevie Ray Vaughan doing 'Look Out Little Sister', it's killer stuff - RIP Jeff. BTW, that's the legendary Dr. John sitting in on the piano, that's a whole other musical rabbit hole to go down.

The Piano Player, Dr. John began his career as a guitarist until he was shot in the left hand breaking up a fight between one of his band members and an enraged husband who had accused the member of messing around with his wife. That pretty much halted his guitar days and he turned to the piano instead where he enjoyed a long and successful career.

Enjoyed your reaction. I remember when he was getting really big my friend who was in a Montreal band was at my place and I said have you heard of this guy Jeff Healey and my friend told me he knew him and sometimes did gigs with him. Then he told he was coming to town soon and if I wanted to go meet him. Of course I said yes and not only did my date and I meet him but we were seated at his table with the band but also with a few other members of other bands. One of which was a member of Supertramp. He was a really nice guy to get to know a bit that night.

The first time I ever saw Jeff was in 1988 at Grossman's Tavern, a Toronto blues institution. I'd gone to see guitarist Monte Horton, who I'd met 6 years earlier when I had management briefly and was looking to put a band together, and bassist/producer John Switzer(Jane Siberry-'One More Colour', 'Mimi on the Beach'). They were backing up singer Amanda Marshall at the start of her career, it was Jeff's birthday and he was sitting in. His t-shirt had a cartoon of a seeing eye dog standing over an open manhole with that hand over mouth "I'm in trouble" expression. Jeff played his ass off, drunk or not, as we do. Sorry I missed the show with Jeff, SRV and Jeff Beck, my other GOAT after Jimi, where Healey reportedly stole the show. At my 39th birthday, again at Grossman's in 1995, hosting the Sunday night jam on the Labour Day weekend, I finished the night 20 minutes after last call with Hendrix's 'Angel' followed by the Beatles' 'Revolution'. Brought the house down. Jeff's drummer Tom bought me a shot of tequila earlier, and 'Angel' was on the next Healey album. Never met him, sadly. Rest In Power, brother. ;'>D

While at the Horseshoe Tavern in Toronto, after work. Hoisting some beers. Taking in one of my Blues heroes. John Hammond Jr. Mid show. John asks us to welcome a young local man, to the stage.also enjoying the show. Assisted to a chair. And handed a guitar. This guy, proceeded to blow our minds. I had heard chatter about a guy. And was sure it was him. And sure enough. What a lucky fluke for me. Wouldn't be long before everyone knew him. His Album released a few years later. Then his small part in Road House the flick. Gracing the stage with others like Stevie Ray Vaughn RIP. Jeff

Understand that guitar players differ by genre. Jeff and SRV are jazz/blues guitar, Jimi Hendrix was psychedelic rock, Eddie Van Halen is hard rock, Tony Iomi and Zakk Wilde are classic Metal. Most tend to admire the guitarist in the genre they like best. I like rock and classic metal.

No one wishes for blindness of course but what a perfect example of the human spirit to overcome. In the end, Jeff's blindness may have been a blessing. Would he have been as focused and passionate if not for the blindness? Music for him, like for Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles, Andrea Bocelli, William McTell, Ronnie Millsap etc became his entire world. The blindness in itself became part of the artistry. As musicians that are already gifted reach a different plane within themselves due to the inner "eye" being more and more sensitive to their craft. It literally becomes their life in an entirely different level.

I saw Jeff play at seedy clubs that had open mic nights on Yonge Street. He used to take the TTC to downtown Toronto and walk around looking for clubs that would let him play. First time was a place called the "Upper Lip". Some friends were playing there and Jeff was also there. We were all gobsmacked by this guy's, obviously insane talent. I was once sitting on a patio at Eaton Centre and we heard him playing at the Colonial. So we ended up watching him play there. The last show was at the old Copa where I worked setting up bands in exchange for free cover charge plus guests and a like $20!!
