I remember my grandfather liking this song. It was so perfect for Johnny Cash because he cultivated that spooky outlaw dressed in black persona from the very beginning of his career.

My Husband was a Professional Musician. He played with Jesse Smith, who wrote the Almond Joy jingle, and went on to Mayor Land-o-Lakes, Fla! They did this song , only they played their guitars behind their heads! It was an amazing site. I remember, there was a bass lick that my Hubby improvised on, at the end of the song, and he got into big trouble for it! That was back when people went out to listen to bands! Are there any places left with live music? I'm old, I don't go out!

Stan Jones did the original in 1948 and a host of singers have covered it. I think the best is by Frankie Laine in 1963.

If you like this kind of song, not just Johnny Cash, check out Marty Robbins Gunfighter Ballads album, there are a lot of cowboy type songs there.
