This is supposed to be a metaphor for purgatory. To an endless hell of chasing a herd you will never catch. A cowboy's version of hell.
@marmyeater
@marmyeater 3 жыл бұрын
You're half right. It does show basically a cowboy's Hell, but Purgatory is meant to be an intermediate place where people basically work through their sins until they are either good enough for Heaven or evil enough for Hell. So while Purgatory may at times be a bit brutal it is usually temporary, whereas Hell is permanent.

That beat is Johnny Cash’s signature sound. Johnny Cash was a man before his time. He broke barriers of his time. Raised in poverty, he wrote for the common man. Spoke for the voiceless. Welcomed people of all cultures and races. He had a beautiful soul.

It's a ghost story. It's really that simple. It's a variation on an old idea of the Hunt of the Damned. These are the damned cowboys doomed to chase a stampede of hell-cattle forever. The old cowboy who see 'em...Well. Let's hope he fixed his life, yeah? :)

I was about to go to bed when I saw this, wasn't expecting it so early in the morning. Not that I'm complaining, just keep me up a bit longer. The song is exactly what it says, it's a ghost story and a warning, like A Christmas Carol.

The song is about a cowboy who was on the wrong path. He has a vision of what will happen to him if he does not change his ways. In other words he saw a vision of a cowboy’s version of hell.

Nah, the warning was that he had better mend his ways, this was a warning that if he did not change, this is what hell would be like for him. The herd was the devils herd. And hell for cowboys was forever to be tired, in pain, riding hard, and never able to get off a horse chasing the devil’s due.

A Christmas Carol’s 3 ghosts condensed into one frightful scene of demonic cattle running wild and the riders who are dammed forever to chase after them in a fruitless attempt to catch them, all for the actions they took in life. That lonesome cowboy better chang how he is living, or come his judgment, he will join the Marleys with their heavy chains in the sky, only chains exchanged for a Syphilis like task of a never ending chore. Ride on ghost riders, god speed!

If you want to hear a good song about Johnny Cash and about his conversion from the bad ways he was going down, look up Gary Allan "Nickajack Cave". It's based off a true story that Johnny Cash told, and is immortalized by a plaque near the opening of the actual place called Nickajack Cave. The song and the story is very similar in theme to this song.

Not written by Cash. Old cowboy tale. Got turned to a song mixed with a little fire and brimstone imagery back in the ‘40s. Covered by a lot of artists and many are great. You have the right idea, don’t go running with the cattle thieves. You get caught up and you’ll be marked and stuck in the life doing devils work. Change your ways now.

I disagree a bit with your take on the message being not following the crowd or that he was trying to follow these ghost riders. I think what's being described is a cowboy just riding along one day doing his normal activities, when he's given this vision of a cowboy's version of eternal punishment: Never being able to stop trying to catch a herd that cannot be caught, sweat-soaked bone-weariness forever, as a warning to change how he's been living his life.
