Originally done by Nine Inch Nails and written by Trent Reznor, this was a metal groove. Cash adopted it and made it very sad and somber and killed it! His wife (in the video) died very shortly after this. He passed not long after, and it seems he knew he would. Reznor has since said that the song belongs to Johnny now.

Yeah, it's amazing how just the tone of his voice changes the entire meaning of the song. Originally about drug addiction... "The needle tears a hole, the old, familiar sting". A song about drugs slowly taking a life, long before it's time. But in Cash's version, you assume it's medication, and the tragedy of the needle keeping someone alive beyond their time. A complete reversal of the meaning without changing any lyrics. There aren't many artists who can do that.

YES, this hit us, the fans, VERY hard the 1st time we saw it. We all knew he was telling us "goodbye". If you're wondering, the picture hanging on the wall is Johnny's mother. When his wife June died, many think Johnny died not long after from a broken heart. He missed June so much.

Speaking as an old man in the winter of my life I can say Johnny sings the common song for us all. as we get closer to the horizon of our lives we can look back and see the times we chased after selfish dreams and fought old dragons at the expense of the goodness in other's lives, as well as our own. So many of the things we were proud of when young, now fill us with deep pain and regret. It is a song of warning to all the young to get your priorities straight early in life. One of the saddest images is the shattered Columbia framed album. Johnny put Columbia on the map and made them millions. They dropped them without notice in the 80's and Johnny never forgave them for it. Thank God for Rick Rubin, genius, who knew what Cash could bring to the table and was still powerful and relevant as an artist. Plus Johnny's FU attitude was perfect for Rubin's label American Recordings

This was Johnny's goodbye and he admitted thst before he passed. Trent who wrote it said this song belonged to Johnny now. Trents version was about addiction and was excellent. But this version is superior because it strikes a chord with everyone. Not every person deals with addiction, but everyone will have to deal with the end of life and facing their life choices and regrets. We do lose everyone, we all will because that final journey we have to take alone. The final line is the most emotional I think. If he could go back and keep himself. Thats the biggest lesson. To achieve fame Johnny had to lose himself and become what the label and his fans wanted. This lead to addictions, crime, driving people away.... so don't burn your bridges and keep those you love and treasure then, keep true to yourself, because life is short and all the fame and money won't save you. The only thing you have is your heart, soul integrity. Don't give thst up.

@@Gutslinger to be honest I have no idea. I know supposedly he was supposed to have told his daughter that. There was an interview after his death and she said when she first heard the song when he first showed it to her she had a really hard time with it because it was so clearly a goodbye. His health was really bad at that point, he was mostly blind and in a wheelchair. Her mother June would have died very shortly after the release of the song and of course Johnny himself within months of her death. Also reportedly when the scene was at the end when he closed the piano that was the last time he ever played the piano, and if you notice when he closed it it seems like a very conscious thing that he did. Either which way we all know it was his goodbye.

She had some type of harp that you would play. It would sit on her lap or she would play it by her heart. She watched over him as long as she could. I think we can all connect to this song because we’ve all dealt with pain and hurt and lost in fear in our lives and you get to the point where Johnny was and you realize none of that stuff that you spent your life doing really matters none of the awards or gold records helps you feel better when you’ve lost all your loved ones and you’re sick yourself. This song was originally written & performed by "Nine Inch Nails". It was written about drugs & depression. But Johnny Cash's version is considered the best. His version is more about regret for past mistakes in life & realizing material things & fame mean nothing in the end. When the video was filmed in February 2003, Cash was 71 years old & had serious health problems. His frailty is clearly evident in the video. He died seven months later, on September 12 & his wife, June Carter Cash, who is shown gazing at her husband in two sequences of the video, had died on May 15 of the same year.

Great reaction! Your tears show your humanity. JC struggled with addiction throughout his life. I think a lot of those struggles were because of his brother dying in an accident while working. JC blamed himself for his brothers death. His wife, June Carter Cash is the woman on the stairs watching him record this song. She passed away May 15, 2003, Johnny passed away Sept. 12 2003. JC did a few concerts for prisons that were put on vinyl. Iconic stuff back in the day. He did spend some time in prison himself.

He used to stop at my grandpa's diner on Route 66 in Oklahoma in the early 1960's, while touring. He would put me on his lap at the counter, give me nickels, and I would feed the jukebox playing Johnny's songs, along with Bob Wills and Hank Williams.

This song rips me apart. He knew it was his last song, and it shows all his family and friends who are now gone that he outlived or drove away chasing fame and fortune. Seeing an old man crying wanting only to have his close ones back, but at the same time knowing he hurt them before he was all alone is heart-wrenching. He views his life of success and material gains as an empire of dirt now because its meaningless and realized to late in life that he regrets it. Damn this song is legendary.

great genuine reaction... "hurt" by johnny cash is the reflection of his own life. he struggled throughout his life with addiction to drugs and alcohol. the picture of the older lady is his mother. the lady standing behind him was his wife june. the song is about looking for forgiveness from those he hurt and realizing that life is not about collecting possessions but relationships and not taking them for granted.... complex visions of his crumbling museum, his childhood home, cracked dusty awards mixed family images and the crucifixion of Christ show a simple man searching for salvation as he is nearing death. the piano even appeasr to represent a coffin and he supposedly never opened it again after the last take. its one of the most powerful videos ever done and can bring the most ruthless of men to tears. his wife died shortly after the video and he died 8 months later... even the museum burnt down to the ground a few years later during a renovation project... i watch it anytime i feel i am taking life for granted.

Trents version relates to a man falling apart mentally as the album it comes from is basically about the demise of a man culminating in his suicide. Great reaction. For me, this song really hits home. I'm 72, and I can completely relate to regrets that pile up as I grow older. And there's a deep meaning to the end of the song. For me (that's the only person I can speak for, obviously) when he says, "I will keep myself, I would find a way.", it means even if I could go back and do it all over again, I'd be much the same person I was before. I'd keep myself. I'd, somehow, find a way to keep from changing very much. Like I said, it hits me hard. Thanks for sharing with us!

I have respect for Trent that i never had before, he wasn't crazy about Johnny doing this song but after he heard it he was blown away. He said i was born to write it Johnny was born to sing it. He on went to say this song isn't mine anymore. Johnny knew he was dying this was his goodbye when he closed the lid on the piano it was symbolic of closing his casket lid.. Its all about regret and in the end, his relationships meant more to him than wealth, awards, mansions and such (his Empire of Dirt) and this was him saying goodbye to those people he cherished as he knew death was near. Among those who make the lists ranking these things, Johnny's version is considered by most to be the #1 cover ever. I agree. Rick Ruben had to do some fast talking to get him to cover this, and Johnny's daughter begged him not to do the cover. Trent Reznor didn't like the idea initially because it was so personal to him. When Rick sent him a CD of the vocals he still wasn't sold on it, but when he received the video he said he got goosebumps and tears. He said it was like losing his girlfriend - and that it wasn't his song anymore. Johnny also made a cover of Chris Cornell's "Rusty Cage" as well; y'all should check both of them out. Now, another (totally unrelated) suggestion; I'd like you guys to check out "Woke Up Dreaming" by Joe Bonamassa. I generally like hard driving electric guitars, and he can deliver the goods on an electric, but I saw an acoustic performance by Joe that just blew me away. the original writer from NIN, Trent Reznor, said about this cover, "It is not my song anymore, it belongs to Mr. Cash" Says it all really, I think Johnny's version is so much more emotionally powerful and raw because Trent sang about a man trying to overcome his drug addiction but being scared that he wasnt strong enough to be better, Johnny sang about an old man who didn't have long left, a man who knew it was far too late to make up for his past mistakes and a final sorry. powerful stuff

Trent Reznor wrote and sang this song. When he heard Johnny Cash sing it, he said this is Johnny's song now.

Johnny's brother died a terrible death when they were kids and I dont think John ever got over it. He had alot of demons in his life that he overcame. That was June his wife, she died soon after this and he died soon after her.

So this song, as you all knew, was originally recorded by Nine Inch Nails. It's the last song off their "The Downward Spiral" album, which is a concept album that follows a descent into madness by means of religion, dehumanization, violence, disease, society, drugs, sex, and finally, suicide. It's an awesome and amazing album that should be listened to in full at least once in your life. Johnny took this deeply personal and highly conceptual song and made it his goodbye to the world. Trent Reznor was pretty skeptical at first, but did end up liking it quite a bit. Johnny's wife June Carter Cash (a singer/songwriter in her own right and the woman in this video on the stairs) died shortly after this video's release and Johnny followed a few months later. R.I.P. to both of them.

Nine inch Nails said as soon as they heard him sing this it wasnt their song anymore. Was after wife June died. He was in so much pain.heart broken.

He also did a great cover of Soundgarden's song Rusty Cage. The funny part of that is a lot of country fans and their "establishment" gave Soundgarden a lot of grief for daring to cover Johnny Cash's song, until they found out the opposite was true. Johnny knew what sung to him, then he sung it back.
