"Secret Agent Man" was the theme song for the TV series "Secret Agent" (a British series starring Patrick McGooghan, called "Danger Man" in Britain and using a different theme song). The series ran from 1964 through 1967. The line about "kissing persuasive lips" is interesting, because McGoohan insisted on no kissing scenes. He was married, and he believed it would be unfair to his wife. Johnny Rivers had one other song associated with a TV series. His version of "Midnight Special" was used for the late-night concert series of the same name. Other TV theme songs that became hits include Hawaii 5-0, Believe It or Not (from The Greatest American Hero), The Rockford Files, Miami Vice, Peter Gunn, and Taxi.

I remember loving this song as a kid, but listening to it on AM radio and wondering, 'What is a Secret Asian Man'? lol! Hadn't been made aware of the show yet. (And, tell you what, it *still* sounds to me like Asian!)

John is one of the greatest singers ever, incredibly talented. I believe he's still performing. Many very good songs. Memphis, Seventh Son, Baby I need yr Loving. Poor side of Town and Rockin Pneumonia and Boogie Woogie Flu, my favorites. Damnica, I agree how can songwriters come up with such great lyrics. To me the songwriters mid 50s, 60s and 70s were the best.

Here's another 'secret' .. James Bond author, Ian Flemming, was actually a real life '007' during WWII. No kidding! .. Ian wasn't a '007' but he really was a spy. Johnny Rivers wrote this theme song for a TV show that was a spin off of a British show titled #DangerMan ... 🕵

In the 60's Secret Agent's were everywhere, on TV in the movies and in real life, TV had The Avengers 1961, Get Smart 1964, Man from Uncle & I Spy 1965, Mission Impossible 1966, the year this song came out 1966, and the 60's had numerous Bond movies agent 007, 😳 Cartoon's Secret Squirrel, Rocky and Bullwinkle with Boris and Natasha, and MAD Magazines Spy Vs Spy 🕵️‍♂️ 🕵️‍♀️ the 60's definitely had a spy craze! I loved this song when I was young. I think that spy movies and tv shows as well as books had a more international look and feel to us in America. That and Johnny Rivers voice made this song a hit. If you get a chance to check out another great voice listen to Nancy Sinatra's duet with Lee Hazelwood. He was a country artist and she was the Mod daughter of Frank with hits like These boots are made for walking. Together as a couple for a short while they did the song SUMMER WINE. The contrast of their voices makes this one great.

Secret agents, spies, were a craze in the 60s. We had the Cold War, the Bond movies, the Cuban missile crisis, and the "Secret Agent/Danger Man" TV show, followed by knock-offs like "The Man From UNCLE" and spoofs like "Get Smart!" This song was a huge hit, especially among elementary school kids fantasizing about being an agent. Guys used to sing it in the schoolyard before school. Of course, real spies are nothing like Bond----they are circumspect.
