A great cover of the Chuck Berry classic. Johnny Rivers made a number of "Whiskey A-Go-Go" LPs with a lot of great cover tunes done live. Then he put out a bunch of studio hits in the later 60s. I'd go for "Secret Agent Man" next.

this was a Chuck Berry song originally. In January 1964 Elvis recorded and planned it for his next big release. He played it for Johnny Rivers. Before Elvis released it Rivers went and recorded it and released his version. Elvis was hurt and chose not to release his version. I never paid attention to the lyrics in all the time i heard Rivers version, it just sounded like a raccous party record. Then i heard Elvis' version and it's completely different , with more feeling, and i realized the song is about the singers daughter

@@punkydoodle4774 I agree it wasn't the nicest thing to do. But it had already been a hit by Chuck Berry, the original version, and covered by others as well. He had a right to cover it, as did Elvis. Elvis still could have put his cover of it out there, and made a little competition between him and Johnny.

Hi J and Amber. I grew up listening to Johnny Rivers because my grandparents had one of his albums and we're from the same area as he. The club that he mentioned is Whiskey a GoGo. It is affectionately known as the Whiskey and yes it is still open for business. Oh and Johnny Rivers is still touring and playing music at almost 81 years old. As for more Johnny Rivers' songs, Mountain of Love; Summer Rain; Secret Agent Man; Where Have All the Flowers Gone; The Seventh Son; and Huey "Piano" Smith's Rockin' Pneumonia and the Boogie Woogie Flu.

This Chuck Berry classic has been covered by MANY artists, but one of the most unique and interesting ones is by John Cale, formerly of The Velvet Underground. One of the more bizarre covers comes from Jerry Lawler, yes that Jerry Lawler, taken from "It Came from Memphis" Vol. 2, a bunch of rag tag songs from regional artists. 'Frank, this is it' is a must hear for non-mainstream music lovers.

Cover of the original Chuck Berry record from 1959 (the B-side of "Back in the USA."). Lonnie Mack had a hit with a cover in 1963 (#5). Berry's record was titled "Memphis, Tennessee" but the 1963 Mack & the 1964 Rivers covers were titled simply "Memphis." This was the 1st charted single by Rivers on the Billboard Hot 100 peaking @ #2 (2 weeks) on the Billboard Hot 100. Rivers followed it up with another Berry cover "Maybelline," which peaked @ #12 in 1964.

...and the Lonnie Mack hit (an instrumental) is what Dick Clark was talking about. There's videos of Mack playing his other big hit, "Wham", with SRV live!

Johnny Rivers is a great singer and guitar player, and while I've heard versions of this song by everyone from Chuck Berry (who I THINK wrote it) to Elvis Presley and beyond, Johnny's is still my favorite. I also have a particular interest in Johnny Rivers as I share a birthday with him (November 7th). I am having a REALLY hard time picking just one song of his to give for my recommendation this time because he has so many that I love! Off the top of my head I have at least seven songs of his that I really want to see you react to, but I will behave myself and stick to my self-imposed limit of one suggestion per video. I asked for my brother's input and he can't decide either, so I guess I'll just through in the first one that came to my mind, "Seventh Son." I have no doubt whatsoever Jordan will have a blast with that one, and I think Amber will enjoy it as well. Oh, and yes, the Whisky a Go Go is still open today; and no I never went there even though I used to live in the Los Angeles area (I was a preteen at the time, so clubbing wasn't really my thing . . . come to think of it, it still isn't).

The Whisky is still around and thriving since the early 60s. Even older is The Troubadour, another LA club with live music, which is where I used to hang out a bit in the early 90s. Both places have seen the biggest music stars in the world perform there.

A great singer, and a great song, written by America's great storyteller, Chuck Berry. Like all of Chuck Berry's songs, it's a slice of American life and culture -- both the joy and the pain. And it has a twist at the end. What the listener at first believes is a song about lost or unrequited love turns out to be about a father who has lost custody, missing his child.

My older brother had this Whiskey album. He was a bit older than I. For me hearing it was just another reason to play guitar and sing. Classic riffs. First riff I learned was "Secret Agent Man" by JR. Another great guitar song. "Poor Side of Town" is a pretty ballad. Johnny's voice and lots of orchestra!

The Whiskey A-Go-Go is legendary! Especially in the 60's & 70's EVERYONE played there..from The Doors to Zeppelin to The Byrds to Fleetwood Mac. It's even featured in "The Doors", a great movie about The Doors with Val Kilmer practically channeling Jim Morrison. Two more huge hits for Johnny Rivers that you should do are "Seventh Son" (very upbeat, high energy) & "Secret Agent Man" (very popular during the spy/James Bond trend going on at the time). "Seventh Son" was the first song I remember dancing to at my first boy/girl party. I was about 12 & everybody was doing The Jerk, The Watusi, The Mashed Potato...fun dances & great times for that generation coming up! 💙💫💙💫👌💫💙💫💙💫💙💫🌿

The Whiskey-A-Go-Go is an iconic club on the Sunset Strip. I've been a few times and I have that original album with "Memphis" on it that Johnny mentioned. It used to belong to my mother and I was able to get Johnny to autograph it a number of years ago.

I had the opportunity to see Johnny Rivers at an outdoor concert in Boston nearly 20 years ago and got to meet him briefly. It rained during the concert and I told him, "That was quite a summer rain." "Summer Rain" was an introspective psychedelic ballad which was one of his biggest hits. I think Amber would especially love it.

Memphis was written by Chuck Berry and hit big on the R&B charts. Lonnie Mack had an instrumental hit, but Johnny Rivers took it to #2 on the Billboard Singles Charts. Johnny Rivers had a series of albums from 1964 to 1967 recorded at the Whiskey au GoGo. He also had studio albums. Johnny Rivers had a huge hit wit Chuck Barry's Maybelline, Mountain of Love, Secret Agent Man, Summer Rain, and others. He had hits as late as 1978 with Slow Dancing. That was big the year I graduated from High School. Seventh Son is a personal favorite as well.

Johnny Rivers was my first concert in 1976 when I was 10 years old. My Mom was a big fan and took me along. As soon as the music kicked in and I could feel the bass and drums, I was hooked on live rock and roll. That concert instilled a love of music and started my musical journey. She passed a month ago and that memory is strong. Thanks for this.

You're right Rob. The more sound you add to a guitar the more you lose quality sound. The clean sound of an electric guitar is beautiful.
