Everything and anything by Journey with The Voice himself, Steve Perry, is incredible. He co-wrote all the songs too. Anything from the 81 Houston show is mind boggling. They usually don’t sound as synth-y as this particular song. Dont let the cheesy video here deter you from their genius catalog. 😊 Who’s Crying Now? live is a great start as well as Don’t Stop Believin’!

That is Steve "The Voice" Perry. He and Freddie of Queen are usually considered the top 2 front vocalists in rock history. Steve grew up on a lot of motown, and fell in love with Sam Cooke - his mother would play it all the time, and Steve's singing style with his enunciations and dipthongs was heavily inspired by Cooke's singing. Here's some interesting tidbits: Journey's "Don't Stop Believing" is a widely recognized anthem song known throughout the world, and is one of the (still) most popular and most downloaded song of all time - played across the world in sporting venues everywhere - as popular as Queen's "We Will Rock You" or "We Are the Champions". (and I'll bet dimes to dollars you've heard it - the chorus for sure). Journey's "Faithfully" (which is my favorite by them) is heavily regarded as the greatest power ballad ever. When recorded, Prince praised the song and used similar chord progression for Purple Rain. Whether specifically inspired by Faithfully or just a big coincidence, Prince praised the song as being the sound he wanted for Purple Rain, and at one time hoped Journey would be flattered and not offended (try to sue), and called the band to make sure they were cool with it. Which Journey told him it was the single greatest compliment and flattery they ever got.

No lie. Back in the 80s we just called Steve Perry "The Voice". Between this, "Faithfully", other Journay songs and his solo career, he was just incomparable and everyone knew it. No one could top him, he could belt it out like nobody else. This song was a change for the bands direction too, when they embraced 80s-ication. It worked though. By this point they'd been well known in rock for over a decade.
