This one song tells you of the Genius of Kate, who else could write a song about this but not only that make it a great song, completely unique.

All the information to get the story is to be found in the tiny details in this video. Donald Sutherland was asked to play the part of the father. When he arrived for the shoot, he still had not received his work visa from the gouvernment. This almost led to the crew cancelling the whole shoot. He was as sporty guy and so offered to do it for free. A real gentleman.

Hi and thanks for this reaction video. This particular song, as others have noted, was inspired by the book "A Book of Dreams" recounting the memories that Peter Reich had about his father Wilhelm. The song focuses in on a couple of particular aspects of that story. The first was Wilhelm Reich's belief in inventing a machine that could make it rain. The second aspect is his arrest and conviction in the US in relation to alleged fraud - and he probably was guilty of perpetrating fraud - and how after his conviction he died in prison just over halfway through a two year sentence. The court ordered the burning of his books, which given that Reich was a very early critic of Fascism in the 1930's, was an unfortunate convergence of book burning and state censorship. What Kate did with the story was to focus in on the deep emotional side of it: of a boy witnessing the arrest and carting away of the father he loved deeply. Kate wrote and sang about about how such that little boy would feel, how he would remember it, and how as an adult he would recall his lost father . She said that she tried to write the song "from a child's point of view with a tremendous innocence and sadness." Her lyrics reflect this deep sense of sadness and loss, mixed with a remembered love for the father that the men in suits had taken away from him. For instance she sings: "I wake up crying You're making rain And you're just in reach When you and sleep escape me" "I hid my yo-yo In the garden I can't hide you From the government Oh, God, Daddy I won't forget" But despite this the boy with the lost father still remembers the joy that they shared and no matter what befell his "daddy" he keeps those memories alive.

Reaction channels going into songs without doing any research is the norm, but that is risky approach when doing a Kate Bush song. You can spend so much time trying to figure out what is going on that you miss out on the musical/vocal experience. The recommendation to do ‘The Sensual World’ next is a good one. Just watch and listen and you won’t care what she is singing about.

Kate is a fabulous ballet dancer as well. She is multi talented & her music leaves me with a good feeling. Her other great sons are “Running up That Hill”, Babooshka & Wurthering Heights.

Kate's inspiration for this song came from a book by the son of Wilhelm Reich, who discovered a life force energy he harnessed to create atmospheric changes capable of increasing or reducing rainfall. The book tells the story of Reich's son bonding with his father during these controversial experiments. Reich, by the way, is one of my lifetime heroes and inspirations.

British group Utah Saints did a very different version of this song with Kate but called it Somethin' Good. Also, did you recognise the much younger Donald Sutherland who played Kate's father for the purpose of this music video. Thanks to the legendary Canadian actor.

Sorry if this is repeated, but Kate is portraying a real life boy, Peter Reich. Kate often writes songs from radically diferent points of view, which is one of my favorite things.

Many of kate’s songs are based upon books she read, unless you are aware of those books the songs won’t make as much sense…eg wuthering heights, Babooska and this one book based.

I think she found the story of this Mad Scientist interesting. I sannot remember his name but all his machines and research were destroyed by the FBI.

They did it to Nikola Tesla but I'm sure there were others. Around 1988 I watched a news story about a car that ran on water -- Lots of things have been supressed because the public cant be allowed access to the technology. They have been able to control the weather for about 70-80 years

@@annother3350 This song is specifically about Wilhelm Reich. He died in prison one year after he was arrested in the 1950s. Kate tells the story from the perspective of his young son Peter, who grew up to write his "Book Of Dreams". That's the book in Donald Sutherland's pocket, which obviously was not written when Wilhelm was alive.
