I can't help but feel that it has been easier for those of us who were there when Kate appeared on the scene. We witnessed her incredible journey in music step by step. Song by song, album by album, she took us with her in that incredible artistic development she went through. When you've never heard of her and just get dropped somewhere in the middle of that journey, it must be a lot more difficult to grasp what she's all about. Just for a quick overview: this is a song based on true events, where the machine depicted was supposed to somehow capture a proposed metaphysical substance, particle, or energy 'orgone' (hence the opening lyric "I still dream of Orgonnon...") which Wilhelm Reich claimed had some sort of manifest capacity related to the development of rain clouds. His 'Cloudbuster' was a device he intended to be able to harness orgone to create rain (see lyric: "...you're making rain..."), he was later arrested due to a court injunction (also referenced in the song). But yes, read all about it!!

When i first heard Kate Bush, i think that was about two years ago, long before the resurgence of "Running Up That Hill", I also felt that her songs were weird, and i thought, who would've like these type of songs, it's so ridiculous. But that was when i first heard Wuthering Heights, it is so weird that i listened to it again, and again up until i already searched for its lyrics and memorized it.. After that, I got more curious so i listened to Babooshka, Running Up That Hill, Cloudbusting, This Woman's Work, until i already added those songs into my playlist, so I searched for more like Hounds Of Love, Army Dreamers, Them Heavy People, Wow, There Goes a Tenner, The Man With The Child In His Eyes, Breathing and many more.. Now i am now addicted to Kate Bush, she's so eccentric, but she's a genius singer-songwriter, plus she's so gorgeous.. i hope you react to more of her songs..😁

Thanks for sharing. Glad to hear you researched a bit rather than dismiss this artistic genius. Her work is never mainstream and will pull you in.
@Johnny_Socko2 жыл бұрын
That's how it happens, lol. I had the same thing happen to me decades ago. I think the problem is that her weirdest songs get the most attention ("Wuthering Heights", "Babooshka", etc.), and if you don't love those then it can turn you off. I heard those first and didn't care for them, so I ignored her as an artist for years. But when her album The Sensual World was released, it got a bunch of good reviews and so I bought the CD, and I thought it was amazing. Then I went back and bought Hounds of Love, The Dreaming, and her greatest-hits album The Whole Story. And then I bought The Whole Story VHS, which was a collection of all her music videos. I was a late bloomer when it came to music, and Kate Bush was the first artist that I felt was truly "for me". There would be others later of course, but she remains unique and superlative. I just think more people would connect with her if the first song they hear is *NOT* "Wuthering Heights" (or anything from The Dreaming, lol).

"Cloudbusting" is based on a book. It was inspired by Peter Reich's 1973 Book of Dreams, which describes his father Wilhelm's arrest for contempt of court. Wilhelm Reich was an Austrian psychiatrist who was trained in Vienna by Sigmund Freud. In the 1930s, Reich came up with the concept of "orgone," a physical energy contained in the atmosphere and in all living matter. The "Cloudbuster" was a device he came up with to manipulate the orgone energy in the atmosphere, which would force clouds to form, bringing rain.

This song was off her Hounds of Love LP. It contained the songs Running Up That Hill, which you've reacted to, as well as the title track and Big Sky. The A-side contained these songs, while the B-side was a concept album titled the Ninth Wave. It was made up of 7 individual songs which formed a whole story. Someone who doesn't like Kate bush when they are young, can come back decades later and find they love her music.

I'm no Kate Bush fan, but this is my favorite song of hers. "A Deal With God" is really good, but to me, this one is great. Those strings and those drums Really make this one POP, and her lyrics are superb here, too. Something about how she says "every time it rains" gives me goosebumps and tingles my spine. And how freakin' cool is Donald Sutherland in this video? Awesome. "I just know that something good is gonna happen!"

Kate Bush (so far) is a one off, music,art,story telling,that amazingly expressive voice. She is genius. You have to listen and watch Dont Give Up,she recorded with Peter Gabriel,its so beautiful.

No one can tell a story like Kate. She was and remains utterly unique. It's her music, her vision, and she has utter control over it, and I respect her massively for that.

Kate Bush is a genius. It’s a shame that J can’t see that. But it’s sort of fun too, as there’s an opportunity to wind him up way past Rock Lobster levels 😂. May I suggest The Dreaming next?

A very emotional song as it's based on a true story.

Try 'Moments Of Pleasure', it's IMO her most beautiful ballad. If Jay doesn't like that one he needs to see a doctor. For Amber: listen to 'The Ninth Wave'. It's a suite of seven songs that take up the second half of the Hounds Of Love album, forming one continuous story. It's probably too artistic for Jay, but you'll get it. It's amazing.

Exactly. Amber should listen to "The Ninth Wave" on her own because I think she'll appreciate it. Jay should join her for "Why Should I Love You", "Rubber Band Girl", and "Be Kind To My Mistakes".

I didn't particularly like "Moments of pleasure" when it came out, and didn't listen to it for 20 years. Then I listened to it again a few years ago with the official video, and had tears streaming down my cheeks. Some people are just not ready for it when they are young, and need the passage of time and life events to truly appreciate it.

@@nealm6764 All of this. So much of Kate's music, more than almost any modern artist's music I know of, comes into its own as the listener ages, develops, evolves, and grows. The nuances and depths she imbued in the songs are waiting for us to discover.

' Moments of Pleasure' is a true masterpiece. Just beautiful. I hope they do react to it.

This is the extended film version of the song, not the album version. She extended the song and added the "It's you and me, Daddy." That's Donald Sutherland playing Wilhelm Reich, and Kate playing his son, Peter. She was inspired by Peter Reich's book, A Book of Dreams, about his time with his dad before he was arrested. Organon was the name of their property.

"you're like my yo-yo that glowed in the dark / what made it special made it dangerous" is probably my favorite Kate Bush lyric. Love this song!
@bibakroll89992 жыл бұрын
The song was inspired by a book. The book was written by a man whose father developed a means of making rain - "cloudbusting". His idea was to bring rain to arid parts of the world so that they could grow crops for food. The governments of the day did want this, for political reasons. One day the men in black came and took him away and his son never saw him again.

the word genius is overused in life, where kate bush is concerned it’s inadequate. she’s a once in a generation artist.

Kate's work is about the whole experience and she's not always to everyone's taste, but my goodness she's so talented in all she does. She did another single called "Experiment IV" which was similar in that it looked at sound rather than clouds - just as good and highly recommended.

Kate Bush is a performance artist who happens to use music as her medium. She writes, sings, produces, and creates all of her own songs. She had a huge hit in Wuthering Heights when she was 18, built a house with a studio in it off the money, and the rest of her albums are essentially whatever she wants to do without commercial pressure. Her album "The Sensual World" is probably her most mainstream effort but she is truly an artist. She has stories to tell and the audience who needs them will find them.
