Singer Robert Plant has always been interested in history, lore, folktales, fantasy, etc., and he was inspired to write these lyrics while on tour in Iceland. As others have mentioned, it's about the Viking invasion of England ("We come from the land of the ice and snow"). The yell is a Viking war cry, the lyrics describe the threshing oars of the ships as they sailed to England to "fight the horde" as they "sing and cry 'Valhalla! I am coming!" Valhalla is the place Norsemen believed they went after dying in battle. They tell the conquered "We are your Overlords" however, history says that they gradually turned from rampaging pirates to fellow Christians and citizens. Some wrought only destruction, but others, like the Saxons before them, eventually settled down and became civilized so the English could "rebuild all their ruin" because "peace and trust can win the day despite of all they lost".

@@Ha-young_is_Just_Too_Fine Think it was Michael who said they had! The Ango-Saxons never really invaded Wales . Partly because ( like the Picts and Cornish) the Romans didn't get as much of a foothold in these regions so didn't enforce the limtation on weapons as they did with the Britons in what is now England. This is why the Britons had to invite the Anglo-Saxons in as they had no protection from those groups attacking them once the Romans left. The Anglo-Saxons didn't really go further than Offa's Dyke because they thought the Welsh lands to be infertile and not worth waging war over. Rhodri the Great and Alfred the Great eventually clashed and the former was killed. Eventually, Rhodri's sons Anarawd (king of Gwynedd and Powys) and Cadell (Seisyllwg) were forced to acknowledge Alfred as their overlord. This step was to have far-reaching consequences, for subsequent English leaders could claim overlordship of virtually all Wales.

As mentioned below, this is a song about conquest not immigration. And specifically, the Viking invasion of England where Led Zeppelin are from. Valhalla, mentioned by name, is the Nordic term for Heaven. Coming from "the land of ice and snow" (Scandinavia) to the soft "fields of green" (England) the song is about thrashing their oars on Viking ships to invade the western shore of the British Isles.

"We come from the land of the ice and snow" That's Scandinavia...Nordic people...the Vikings...Norway, Sweden, Denmark and (sometimes) Finland, depending on the source. "Threshing oar"....they were sea faring people. "Valhalla"...that's a part of Norse mythology...it's where those who fight and die bravely in battle go. It's considered a great reward and a honor. "We are your overlords"....They weren't immigrating, they were pillaging and conquering and decimating the British natives who resisted. This song is factually true. The Vikings did invade Britain and control large parts of the country during a period of expansion towards the end of the 8th century. They invaded Ireland as well.
