One thing I appreciate about this (and a lot of their songs) is how the singing and instruments cooperate and compliment each other. Great reaction. As some have mentioned, the sounds during the middle were made by guitarist Jimmy Page using a bow on his guitar. These were truly 4 master musicians who, when combined, created perfection. If you are appreciative of the craftsmanship on the studio cuts, thank Jimmy Page; not only did he create the band and possess "Sensei" level guitar skills, he also produced all their albums and no recording went out without his approval. Now...if you want to see the ULTIMATE live version of this song, watch the video of it from their concert movie called The Song Remains The Same (it's the same concert where the live Stairway to Heaven footage came from). The video is 28 minutes long (yes indeed) but WORTH IT. It is like a mini concert all by itself. Back in the day, it wasn't unusual for Zep to play 3 hour concerts so a 20+ minute song performance was no big deal lol.

Zepp's first lp is the most roots/blues/rock&roll, IMO, and thus my fav, with their folkish effort, Zepp 3 my 2nd fav... (And, btw, Zepp did not like making "singles" records cuz they strongly believed in the album experience, with each song building on the previous tune in the lp. And Asia and BJ's reaction to this song, D&C, recalls my own astonishment upon hearing it back in '69 for the first time, right before I saw them in concert! Thanx, Peace&Love

I'm a 64 y/o white, and the soundtrack of my generation is the GREATEST. Chamber Brothers 2 Zeppelin, and everything in between, Led Zeppelin were four masters of their instruments.

Gotta check out When the Levee Breaks by Zeppelin.

When the Levee Breaks and Kashmir are two of their most beloved songs. You can hear the blues influence in their vibe. Rock and Roll is heavily influenced by rhythm and blues with some angst and guitar added. When the Levee Breaks has some soulful swamp rock jazz sound to it with that amazing harmonica they add in. TO Asia's point - never heard a band that add that many sounds - the peak of that particular mountain would be Pink Floyd. But Led Zeppelin is close there with them.

Led Zeppelin did the call and response so well with Robert Plant speaking to the guitars. It's black music but combined with the western traditions as well.

This is why I recommend first time reactors listen to the studio recordings first. Jimmy Page (guitarist) was wizard in the production and mixing of these songs to perfect the sound. It was often not possible to reproduce on a live stage. Plus concert recordings of this era are typically not very good. You made the right choice. Many reactors want to "see" the bands perform in concert (fine), but at a price. They miss really "hearing" the quality of the music.

Drummer John Bonham had a short ride with Led Zepplin before his death. His influence still felt today in the drumming world! Maybe the best rock and roll drummer to ever sit behind a kit!!

at 7:49 7:50 there is a note that is pure distortion. Distortion exactly in tune with the note progression. Always Amazes Me. Because that is the precise touch of a human being causing that sound: you can literally hear Jimmy Creating in that moment.

You two should watch the DVD concert called Celebration Day by this group . This was actually a lottery concert held in London. Keep in mind the group is a lot older (2007) one more thing..The drummer is the son of the deceased (John Bonham). It's a great show

One of things about the musicians of this band is that they didn't just play and sing to their songs, they were all an intricate part of it. Everything they played had purpose. There are a lot bands/songs that you could slip in a different drummer, bassist, guitarist and even vocalist in some cases and not even notice. Not so with any of their songs. Change one instrument part and the whole song dynamic changes. Which is why, when people cover them, it can be difficult to do it justice. (With the exception Anne and Nancy Wilson of Heart, because well, they're just amazing.)
