A sorrowfully simple ballad. Linda's stunning vocal delivery conveys sheer heartbreak, struggle and loneliness. She is a true musical angel on earth... Thanks for watching! 🥰

Every time I listen this song brings tears to my eyes, and I've been listening to it for over 50 years. Perhaps, the saddest song ever recorded. There is something so painful about lost love, but, "a love that never was" hurts so much more. Linda does an extraordinary job of bringing that pain to life for all of us to understand.

A voice from the heavens just dripping with emotion. A platinum rating if there ever was one, my opinion of course. Strangely enough, back in the day I didn't appreciate Ms. Ronstadt as fully as I should have. I certainly do now.

Yes, my rating was just my initial reaction to the music, but it's always been clear to me that her heavenly voice will always be at triple platinum status... It's sad that the singing voice is gone, but her legendary legacy will live on for all time through her catalog.. thanks for tuning in!

Yes, the fact that the melody is unresolved at the end was such a good choice musically. It’s discomfiting, which fits the subject matter. I don’t know who made that choice…..the producer or the writer or Linda or the arranger. But it was a good one

Lovely! I haven't heard this in a Long Long Time! 😁 Always nice when it came on the radio in the family car. I can't remember if my mom or sister had the album? I was trying to find what musicians played on the song and found a quote by Norbert Putnam: "The record was produced by Elliot Mazer. I was hired to arrange and played the fender bass and the electric harpsichord. Pete Wade played the Finger style acoustic guitar, Buddy Spicker played the two violin parts and Weldon Myrick played a fuzz cello. The track was recorded with Linda's vocal, my bass and Pete's guitar. We did three takes. Later the same day we overdubbed the violins and Weldon's steel [guitar] with my Harpsichord part. The record was recorded at 10AM on a Saturday morning at Woodland Sound Studio Nashville. NP"

I lived through her whole career and heard her on the radio daily. Yet I didn't appreciate her until recently. I was pretty clueless about pop music and I just liked what was catchy. Now I realize what an AMAZING talent she has. She can sing any kind of music, and did. She sang country-rock, R&B-flavored rock, and other genres. She delved into standards and Broadway after her Top 40 heyday in the 70s. She could do it all. And she did it as a woman in a world that tried to box her in and hand all her power and agency (and money) to men. I can only imagine what an uphill battle that was, every day. I have so much admiration. As a final note, I was at a music festival watching some folk artists and they kept bringing other people out on the stage, including Linda Ronstadt. I didn't know until that moment that a microphone was superfluous for her. I was in the back of the theater and her giant voice boomed and ricocheted off the walls. Amazing. Honestly, we are lucky to live in her world.

You’re entitled to your opinion, and I respect it. But with that said I never understood when folks feel it necessary to proclaim something as “the best”. To make it into a competition. Especially when it comes to art. To me it’s like saying bananas are the best fruit or broccoli is the best vegetable. Don’t get me wrong. Linda is a great vocalist. One of the greatest, arguably. But so is Ella, Whitney, Karen carpenter, Streisand, Aretha, Joni Mitchell, Kate Bush, Nina Simone, Maria Callas, Celia Cruz, Bessie Smith, Elizabeth Fraser and I can add 30 more singers to this list at least. All these singers are great, and they bring something special and unique to the table.
