Hammer had a cross over hit-Can't Touch This-and the rap game lost their MINDS. LOL.Several years later rappers started doing the exact samething as Hammer did,but it was okay.

1970's - 1979 was the rise of the DJ's and Rapper's before LL Cool J he more of 1985 + is when he became more popular. Also, he wasn't necessarily the 1st solo artist to cross over to the PC, I could be wrong on that one ... Kurtis Blow was the first rapper signed to Mercury Records in 1979. Fatback Band 1979 single "King Tim III" Sugar Hill Gang 1978,1979 hit "Rapper's Delight and there's others between 1970 - 1979

LL was discovered and dropped "I Need A Beat" when he was 16. This was released 3 years later, so he was 18 or 19. He has been on the scene most of his life. That's why he is considered a GOAT, his career has spanned multiple decades, multiple styles, multiple changes in hip-hop and remained on top till he decided to act full time.

People also need to remember that LL Cool J blew up in an era BEFORE SOCIAL MEDIA!!!!! There was no internet, rap was still not played on most national radio stations on a regular basis, yet LL was still multi platinum!!! Many rappers look at LL as a major influence on their own careers just like many Rock artists look at Blues artist as major influence on their careers!! Imagine how big LL would have been if we has social media in the mid 1980's!!!

This came out in 1987. Eminem’s Slim Shady LP was released early 1999 and was written/recorded 1996-1998. Eminem was 26 when that dropped. LL was 19 when this dropped. LL blew up much younger even though he’s only 4 years older. Completely different generations. Also, crack started becoming available in the early 80’s and caught fire around 1985 and peaked from about 87-92. This came out in 1987. They didn’t have to witness the full impact of the crack epidemic to be cool and state not to do drugs in their music. Their generation’s OGs took care of their youth more than the newer generation does.

This song is from 1987 and by the early 90s LL was really popular. LL was one of the artists that built Def Jam and took hip hop mainstream, and one of the Beastie Boys was actually responsible for getting him signed. Various combos of Run DMC, Beastie Boys, LL, and Public Enemy did tours together through the 80s. Would have been great to see those legendary lineups back then.

When you guys are ranking and comparing rappers from different generations also remember the times they were living in(no social media influence, videos were new for some of them) and the areas they were coming from(every hood is different, every borough in NYC had their own slang and way of dress)....Run DMC(and a lot of the early guys) came from doing Block Parties, just having fun and getting a live crowd hype, then they started making records...the guys slightly after them still did live shows, but more paid shows, more studio work, with more intricate pen skills....for example, you go from Big Daddy Kane to KRS One and Rakim to Nas...it's more of an evolution than a comparison.

@@heyjude1927 yeah, you right, so much to dive into....The Beastie Boys 1st album could be played from beginning to end, hit after hit. I believe they were punk rockers turned hip hoppers (very experimental) they pushed the culture in their own way (beer drinking, partying and got stories to tell).

This still goes hard, every time this song came on the intro built anticipation before he even start rapping. His flow just blended perfectly with this beat. I take a muscle bound man and put his face in the sand. Now LL is that muscle bound man. Note: Look how rap has changed? The detective at the end says you kids are causing us a lot of trouble with this anti-drug talk.

In 1986 when LL was 16, he gave his demo tape to AdRock (still in high school) from the Beastie Boys who used to listen to all the tapes and hand the ones he liked over to Rick Rubin to hear. Rick Rubin was just starting to produce music - the Def Jam label - from his college dorm room (his dorm roommate was Russell Simmons) LL says it was AdRock & the Beastie Boys who got him his break into the music business. He introduced the Beastie Boys into the R&R hall of fame ceremony in 2012.

LL dissed The Gap brand while DoinG the Gap commercial all while wearing a small store brand called FUBU. For You By U. FUBU blew up after that genius free advertising by LL. He deserves all the respect and more that Aretha sung about. "I Need Love" was my very 1st rap song. ❤

Ya'll should react to LL Cool Js rival, Kool Moe Dee, the first rapper to diss a rival personally. Specifically Kool Moe Dee vs Busy Bee - first documented freestyle battle where Moe Dee targeted and talked about Busy Bee personally. Back then, you only dissed crews, hoods or cities. Dissing personally was something new.

LL COOL J was 17 when he signed but Em was a grown man with a wife and kid wen he signed with Dre .it was around 99 when I first her Slim Shady so he was almost 30 . That's why they are so different. LL was Def Jams first artist . A true legend and hip hops first sex symbol. In fact Em is a big fan of his and performed for him when LL was inducted into the rock and roll hall of fame .

The fact the LL spanned the history of HipHop from the 80s to the 2000s IMHO truly makes him the GOAT!!! That would be the equivalent of Jordan having Jordan's career with LeBron's longevity and relevance still playing into say 2015.

The best thing about old school rappers is that no two sounded the same. The were all unique and brought something different to the table. Nowadays all that mess sounds the same except for maybe J Cole and Kendrick. I’m old school so I haven’t kept up with too many other rappers since.

I agree with you. I believe that their hearts are in the right place, and I'll give them some level of respect for even listening to Hip Hop two or three generations before their time. They called Run DMC "corny." They're entitled to their opinion, but Run DMC was far from corny -- they were very pivotal in bringing Hip Hop to the mainstream, and they were very talented.
