"The Ballad of Curtis Loew" is a great Skynyrd song that tells a cool story. Good ol' Southern Rock/Blues.

Lynyrd Skynyrd were virtually unknown in the UK back in 1976 so this concert was effectively their breakthrough. The entire set was absolute killer from start to finish. The Rolling Stones were the headline act and the consensus was Skynyrd blew everyone away including the Stones. Knewborth is a stately home in England that held a festival in the grounds every year. The official crowd that year was 120,000 but unofficial estimates range from 150 to 300,000. This was the summer of 1976 (July I think) and temps were in the 90s. Can’t imagine being in the middle of that crowd in that temp.

“That Smell” is the baddest guitar gem on the face of the earth, it’s also written about a band member and the best anti drug song ever.

I was only 14 when I heard of the plane crash that took the lives of 6 people, 3 of them from Lynyrd Skynyrd. I was at the movies with a friend. They stopped the opening ads and movie trailers and made the announcement. My friend and I had no idea who they were. The name intrigued us, and we knew they must have been important and famous from the honor they were being given at the theatre. As soon as we got back from the movie, we had to find out who they were (not easy with no internet in those days). We called the radio station and requested a song and spoke with the DJ for a while. (Another thing we did often, and I miss today). Then, shortly after, we were buying Lynyrd Skynyrd albums! Of course I fell in love with their music with great and powerful lyrics, too. My favorite --of course -- was Free Bird! That song is a masterpiece with iconic vocals and incredible instrumentals. The guitar playing is insane!!

Story telling 101 is what Ronnie Van Zant (lead vocals) did. Lynyrd Skynyrd is considered Southern Rock and is well worth a deep dive. Simple Man, Freebird, and Sweet Home Alabama are probably their most well-known songs, but there is way more than that. Call Me The Breeze The Ballad Of Curtis Loew The Needle And The Spoon are a few more good songs. Great reaction, and thank you.

While your at it, T for Texas and Call Me The Breeze, also from the Knebworth show, are epic, kick butt, Southern boogie songs by the best band ever. Of course, don't miss their incredible performance of Freebird live at the Oakland Coliseum 1977.

True story from what I read somewhere, Ronnie was a bad mofo and loved to fight from what I hear. Staring down a 44 is a different kinda fight though

It is a true story. I have never heard that Ronnie liked to fight. What happened here was Ronnie and his band mates were at a local bar, he asked a women to dance, she said yes, however, her boyfriend was not amused,.

🇺🇲🇺🇲🎸 .... Saeed , this is a serious jam !! Here is a little bit of my story. My Mom played in a band with her man ((.. the guy after my parents split ..)) He was a good Country guitarist & singer. This was one of their best songs. The crowd always danced to this one. My Mom played bass guitar and sang. Later on ... their son -- my little brother learned to play guitar and sing .. and he plays this song now in his Rockin' band. It still is a crowd pleaser and my brother nails it every time. ....... oh yeah , my Mom's name is My Linda, and many people call her Linda Loo. 🤠

They closed their shows with Free Bird. Check out Free Bird live at the Oakland Festival 1977. On Oct 20, 1977 only a few months after the Oakland performance there was a plane crash. Ronnie Van Zant 28 (leader), Steve Gaines 27 (wearing white in this video Free bird video he's wearing red pants), Cassie Gaines Steve's sister 28 and backup singer, road manager, and 2 pilots died. 20 others survived but had serious injuries. 10 years after the crash Gary (guitarist) and Johnny Van Zant restarted the group. Saw them last year and will see them again. August 15th.

Southern Rock at its best! Their most famous songs are Free Bird (very long guitar solos) and Sweet Home Alabama. They have a lot of good ones. Died far too young in plane crash.

Well im subbing straight up and that's because you're reacting to my favorite band ever . You ain't heard nothing until you watch Freebird live here in the States and Call me the breeze just to name a few and the rendition of Sweet Home Alabama they do where Stevie Gaines and Allen Collins throw a version of their Lead guitars into the second part of the song is beyond mind boggling and as far as I know that's the only time they ever done it.

Yep, this is based on Ronnie getting in trouble dancing with a lady at a bar, her name was Linda Lou, and her jealous boyfriend pulled a gun and threatened him. He did indeed run for the door and I believe Gary and Allen were outside waiting, and they took off.

Surprised that no one is calling out Freebird 🤣🤣🤣🤣 It has become a meme. Probably their most iconic songs 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻 Some great story telling 👌🏻👌🏻 Now you need to do Shinedown's cover of Simple Man by Lynyrd Skynyrd. So many references to Ronnie van Zant in the music video. Shinedown and Lynyrd Skynyrd came from the same town.
