“Scuttle Buttin’”, first song off his 2nd album that he used to open with in the mid-‘80s, which he used to follow immediately with “Couldn’t Stand The Weather”. You know the next one, “Ain’t Gone & Give’n Up On Love”, then “Say What?” from the 3rd album ‘Soul To Soul’ which, when it first came out and I heard it on Austin radio, I thought they were chanting “Sold his soul.”

Hey Lee✌️glad you enjoyed this👌. That first song was Scuttle Buttin that he usually starts his sets with. The name comes from old ships that had a large dispenser (like a modern day water cooler) that sailors would gather around and shoot the breeze so refers to gossiping/chatting). This was January 1986. Stevie was 31 here. But everything really is young Stevie as 35 is too very young to be your last year. I think you missed when Reece broke the piano bench and after asking Reece so what happened Reece, he walks away and tells him no more drinking! But they jumped right back in the exact spot they were. Such a tight knit group and awesome Band of Brothers. Stevie always insisted all performance fees be divided equally between each member even though he was the main draw. He insisted which was unheard of which tells you a lot about the man himself as well as the band's devotion to him. Even though the video and sound quality leaves a lot to be desired, we all remain grateful it was recorded at all. 🎸🎶💙‼️💯. As always thank you Lee for our Stevie Ray Sundays👌🙏👏🙌💯. Keeping great music alive thanks to super reactors like yourself😉❣️

Yes his guitar techs were a crucial part of the team. Rene Martinez shown here strapping him in was a valuable and important person to Stevie. He met Rene when he was working at Charley's Guitar Shop in Dallas. Charley Wirz was good friends with Stevie and was the one Stevie wrote Life With You about. He finally talked Rene into leaving Charley and touring with the band, he even sometimes opened for them depending on the venue as Rene is an excellent Flamingo guitarist. Stevie was really hard on his guitars and Rene had his work cut out for him to keep them in repair, restrung tons of time, and he was the tech that switched guitars on Stevie out so smoothly at the Austin City Limits Look At Little Sister performance. A very integral element to the group.

I've seen interviews with Tommy and Chris over the years. One of them said there were times in sound checks and rehearsals when Stevie would purposely TRY to play badly & screw around, but he just couldn't do it, it always got right back into a groove. That opening number was called Scuttle Buttin'. It was how they usually opened their shows.

Pittsburgh, January 1986. Very entertaining for a “sound check”. Thanks for your reaction. The video is just an amateur camera from crew associate -so no direct audio feed from the mics to adjust with. First and third songs (Scuttlebutin’/Say What) used to be played in succession in their earlier sets. On “Say What”, you can see Stevie soften his guitar riffing to allow Reese Wynans to solo before the keyboardist’s bench collapsed on him! It was a humorous moment and you can hear someone suggest “no more drinking “ in jest. This video is a nice behind scenes of a weary band going about their business to run an obligatory production check for an upcoming performance. I especially enjoy seeing a tired SRV begin to apply himself and seem to come to life when the music begins. And his outfit; dude!! Very soulful rendition of “Ain’t Gonna Give Up Love” Memphis TV production, August 1986. I think Stevie cleaned up fall of 1986. kzbin.info/www/bejne/jGexeaOepr2Xfposi=wRLFDHIiEOY96Hoc

In the mid or late 70's I attended a concert in Spokane, WA where SRV and Bonnie Raitt performed. I can't remember which was the headliner. SRV was either stoned or badly hungover, sounded horrible, and probably didn't do a sound check. Bonnie Raitt was great, but she was not who I came to see.

Boy you don't hear that very often but that would have probably been in 1986 when his lifestyle started really catching up with him in terms of playing. His talent, commitment, and passion for playing couldn't be denied even high but then it did. The same year he collapsed, almost died, rehabbed and recovered transforming himself to another level entirely. He and Bonnie did play in Seattle in 1986. What a bummer to have seen him not play his best.
