Leaving aside the Warholian Whirlwind that was Madonna at the time, from a purely musical vantage point, Madonna has a run of six studio albums from 1989 to 2001 that's unreal in terms of quality. Two A+'s, One A, and Three A-s. That's unheard of in commercial music. Nobody has a run like that (or has, yet.) No. One.

I'm so confused/fascinated by younger people's reaction to sex in general and also Madonna's more sexually explicit work. There are lots of discussions about this on Twitter, but Gen Z (assuming that's what you are?) has a somewhat puritanical view of sex. Why would a young guy not want to see a video like this? Are you uncomfortable because it turns you on? Because there's some homoerotic parts? I'm not judging at all - just trying to understand. Do you feel the same way about "WAP" or movies that have sex in them? As for the song, I get that it's not everyone's cup of tea (I personally like the talking - it's very poetic and relaxing to listen to and it's a style that's so unique to Madonna during the period). It sounded like nothing else at the time (or since!) but Madonna was so popular that it got tons of airplay and hit #1 on the charts.

I think you make a very valid point. I was 12 when this came out and I was just so fascinated by the music and the lyrics. It was so different. It made me feel curious about myself. It gave me the courage to talk about sex and sexuality when the time was right years later. Sex, my sexuality and desires were no longer a stranger. Madonna and this song and video gave a blueprint how to deal these things. I am eternally grateful she did what she did. Now as an adult I am comfortable with my sexuality and talking with my partner about sex is safe, open, curious, respectful, funny and it makes me feel liberated in my body and brains ❤

Right!?! This video was suposed to be sexual liberating but after 30 years it seems worse than in the 90’s. Or is it hypocracy? Like that generation doesn’t have sex? It must be embarresment? Even gigling over the word sex… But don’t think I’m dissing you guy, I enjoy your reactions very much, and if this is how you feel, it is what we are here for❤

@@sillywilly7887 Hey I was also 12 years of age when this came out. I saw this with some friends and we were really amazed giggling about it. We all knew Madonna but we didn't expect this, it was very cool and in your face. She could've just continued putting some nice pop song out but she chose this because SHE had something to say. That's what I luve about her + right from the beginning she always had this sexual vibe coming over - just pure Madonna.

@@sashabertold3731 I also think this was the natural, and only way, for her to grow as an artist. She didn't need to prove herself anymore, only after 6-7 years in the business, but do what felt right. She took a huge risk and what she might have lost in record sales, she gained her crown

Hello from Sweden 🇸🇪 I really appreciate your reactions for Madonna ‘cause I feel you have an open mind to learn and enjoy her kind of artist. That’s what she is. Not just a pop star, but an artist. At the same time I’d like to challenge Tyler to think why open sexuality makes you feel uncomfortable? Why seeing a music video of people being depicted in very intimate moments make you feel uncomfortable? Why didn’t you need to see this video? Did something offend you? Was there something specific that made you feel uncomfortable? Why? Maybe this conversation is good for you to have with yourself? Maybe Madonna’s target was to get people to have this conversation?❤ I agree with Marissa. I think one of Madonnas purpose with this song was to normalize open and honest discussion about sex. Homophobia, violence against women and teenage pregnancies were in 1990 and still are very valuable causes to try to normalize open discussion on sex, protection, sexuality, consent, fantasies, honesty with yourself and your partner etc. One great way to learn about sex, I guess, is to learn about the STD’s, but what about learning how to talk about sex? “Talk to yourself” about sex, with your partner. Listen yourself and your partner. Like Madonna has said herself, this is about a woman having an open and honest conversation with her lover about themselves, their fantasies and how they make each other feel like. It is a love letter. Very intimate. Personally I think this was and is a masterpiece in pop music both production wise and lyrically. The video presentation is noir, intimate, beautiful and a intimate in its presentation. This is art. Keep these videos coming. Keep having the conversation. I hope Madonna and her art is able to help you grow as human beings and seeing life in another way. “I don’t endorse a way of life, but describe one.” “These things exist in life.”

This song and video were so important for me. Huge hit and as a young gay man at the time in a puritanical, homophonic (Reagan was just out of office in the US and Thatcher was prime minister here in the UK) culture where AIDS was everywhere and sex and queerness were completely stigmatised, Madonna felt like the only big, mainstream artist talking about gender, sexuality and desire. She felt like an ally in popular culture at a time when they were few and far between. She was also taking a stand against misogyny and the idea that women could be sexual beings in their own right, rather than as subjugated objects of male desire. She was our queer, feminist hero and I appreciate you reacting to it. Erotica takes things even further. Praise be.

I think her work is still a lot more shocking to people than of the contemporaries because it goes deeper into the aspect of sexuality. The songs with the sexual content verbally even much more explicit are pretty much heteronommative and people feel more comfortable hearing WAP, Nikki singing about slipping and sliding the dxxx than JML. The latter explores different facets of sexuality which are in stark contrast with the boundaries set out by heteronormativity.

Marissa appears to have a more mature take on most of the videos you react to (especially recently). She looks into the “why” a bit more than surface level reactions. Tyler, I’m not sure if you’re genuinely uncomfortable or just acting for the audience sometimes. Men aren’t usually this prudish, but maybe there’s an element of religious conditioning that’s narrowing your viewpoint? I don’t mean that in an aggressive way, I was brought up religious too. You’re both very young, so that has to be taken into account. Thanks for sharing your reactions, I think it plays a role in me understanding other people’s point of views too.

Justify My Love was the follow up single right after Vogue, both songs reached #1. For context, Madonna had just finished her Blond Ambition tour where, at the time, she had shows in Rome shutdown by the Pope, and she was threatened with being arrested in Canada for the sexual content of her show. The religious right was always protesting her by trying to have her shows canceled and her videos banned. Then Madonna released Justify My Love. The hallway, I think, is symbolic of the mind and each room represents the sexual thoughts and inhibitions people have especially the religious right who fear those thoughts. The lyric "poor is the man whose pleasures depend on the permission of another" along with the Justify My Love video challenged the religious right, their closed mindedness about sex, and their hypocrisy since they spoke out against Madonna for being so sexual and sexually free yet they still watched her videos and attended her shows looking for something they could report to police to have shows canceled, or they'd show up at her concerts and stand there with their arms crossed not reacting to her live performances. The religious right fought back against Justify My Love saying that the lyric "poor is the man whose pleasures depend on the permission of another" was Madonna promoting rape and rape culture. It was a debate and fight that carried on in the media with accusations made against Madonna and Madonna defending herself, it went on for months. Justify My Love aired once on MTV before it was canceled so Madonna released the video as a video single and she thanked the religious right for helping her sales and helping her make even more money. Madonna decided to take on the religious right by being even more sexual with her Erotica record and video, and her coffee table book titled Sex. At the time, Madonna said she could be even more sexual and the religious right would still buy her records and her book, and attend her shows because they were hypocritical and she was going to point a mirror back at them in their hypocrisy. Erotica was another hit for Madonna and her coffee table book "Sex" sold out in days. There was literally an entire month at the time where literally everyday on national and local news there was the religious right taking on Madonna about Erotica, the video, her book, and Madonna's sexual image. After the Justify My Love and Erotica era, Madonna softened her image with the Bedtime Stories era and Take a Bow thus pivoting and putting all the controversy behind her. Madonna didn't just literally take on conservatives and the religious right but she also stood her ground and took the debate further by challenging gender norms and challenging the religious right and the culture at the time on gay rights. Madonna took on her critics who complained about her sexual image by pushing boundaries and moving the culture forward instead of backing down. It reminds me of how in 1985 there were leaked nude pictures of Madonna in Playboy and Penthouse from nude modeling she had done years before and the media was trashing and shaming her while her critics demanded an apology trying to have her cancelled. Madonna refused to apologize and shut the controversy down by saying, “who cares” and became an even bigger star. That's why Madonna is brilliant and the Queen of Pop. Finally, Justify My Love had other controversies since the lyrics were actually a poem written to Lenny Kravitz by his former lover. Kravitz, who produced the song and did the moaning in the background, took that poem and turned it into Justify My Love which uses a sample from a Public Enemy song which in turn sampled a James Brown song. Kravitz ended up being sued by his former lover over the lyrics, and Public Enemy threatened to sue Madonna for sampling "their" beat. Madonna responded saying they had sampled James Brown, it wasn't even their beat.

I think you way over reacted. What the girl said about Madonna's purpose being to normalize conversations about sexuality is accurate. She even stated that in interviews during this era of her career. Putting things in peoples' faces was her way of doing that not just when it came to sexuality.

Lenny Kravitz made the song; he did the background vocal. To me, “Erotica” was the much-better version of this. It was a collage of fantasies, whereas this has just 1 setting. The “Erotica” scenes were intentionally shot with slightly distorted imagery, to represent the early days of porn. “Justify My Love” was banned by MTV & later sold as a VHS video-single (for VCR’s, lol- before the DVD era). The single hit #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100. Her reasoning? I bet to make Sean Penn jealous- this was about a year & a 1/2 after their divorce. Also, Madonna’s on record- saying it irritated her that she was allowed to be hot, but not talented too. So, this was kind of her saying- “You think I’m just a §|*+? I’ll SHOW you a $|*+!” (more so 2 years after this with the SEX book, Erotica album, & movie- Body Of Evidence).

The video took lots of flack but I never understood why. It has aged well too-and I'm still nonplussed as to how so many people found it shocking. I don't think anyone else does music videos' as good as her - provocative imagery but nothing that is going to make civilization crumble- it is integral to the song. Her aim is to entertain and if you can piss off a lot of the people in the process then I'm sure Madonna thinks job well done .(and boy is it very easy to piss people off-I think Madonna must do it with glee)

I was also living at London back then, but apart from some news, not much media or street exposure of her or this song. Actually neither was played at discos or at the Friday's Union weekly dance night... Are you sure you went out those days Steven? Because music was exploding in term of styles back then, only with very different musical styles, others, that is.

@@stevenleroux7033 That time was very VERY pivotal. As university student Indie dance was the real mainstream. Happy Mondays, Inspiral Carpets, Stone Roses, and the long list. That current were outsted from the limelight by the US Grunge after Nevermind, but it kept underground (Lush and plenty of good groups) that soon later brought the 90s shoegazers and sweet noise cultivating bands. Then it was recently (Sept 1990) that "The Groove is in the Heart" should had been n°1 peaked at 2, woke that Californian vibes a year later reawaking B'52s into the pop mainstream with "Love Shack", REM "Shinny Happy People". The trend also fused rap-urban Betty Boo and more Dee-Lite, Shakespeare Sisters, and several Djs Norman Cook, same Towa Tei, Bassement Jaxx, etc. At that precise time you could see and hear those vibes at KinKy Afro on Top of The Pops. Going to dance to Ministry one found evolving proto-house and bits of disco tracks later became very prevalent at the 90s and would be called House. It was already pioneered a couple of years earlier with Yazz "The only way is up" and the long reel after that; Xpress, et all, followed by Crystal Waters, and at USA CC Music Factory, Def Factory. David Morales was already remixing dance tracks at 1990!. At 1991, in UK Acid Jazz already existed as a label and as a fusion style was sought (by me I can say ) and soon we all saw it rise and rise. A couple of posh London clubs I was invited were already having that jazzy early house mixes, Lisa Standfield reigning together with more unknown numbers that together with what Radio 1 DJs played, more abstract, more urban. Then Massive Attack "Safe from Harm" first album was raging those in the know, and again going south of London to the Brixton Academy got those deep bass stripped house tunes that set the atmosphere on regular nights. Of course the style and mood shifted almost daily during the week, including concerts. I saw there Lenny Kravitz touring his "Let Love Rule" album. At pubs open all week long in that area, you could see a varied mostly European attendace; squatters or working at hotels/restaurants, all wild parting while listening to Mano Negra, French groups, Funk and even some late Goth mutated into Industrial and a melange of those tunes over the night. And lets not forget the RAVE scene thriving at warehouses and some times merging with the live road-living psychedelic rock scene (Ozric Tentacles), at country side summer concerts, fairs setting inspired Trance dance tents more on the organic side than their Urban RAVE cousins, still very electronic. Of which at 1991 we had the admirable soft trance OPUS III "Its gonna be a Lovely Day" and more techno by Orbital, 808 and a growing list. Of which 1990's seminal Depeche Mode "Violator", mentioned or not, imho set the pace for the fusion techno-IDM-rock-trance existing from then on. (but this is another topic in itself). Soo, Madonna's excellent track "Justify My Love" continued her evolution (from Vogue) in the audiences mind, maybe more on the news with bher cryptic SEX book. But to me it wasn't her take really or her influence what was happening at 1991, neither for the DJs in all those places I was aware of (or the charts) gave her more than a week or so of 1991's attention... Except yes, for William Orbit Extended version of this track, that was played by the connoissieurs, as part of WOrbit's psychedelic funk own chapter, a year later carried by the Guerrilla Label that saw Leftfield, Underworld, Spooky and others and exposed them to US audiences. Fortunately, I was fully aware of it since being graced by attending his sublime Bass-O-Matic concert at Subterrania Sept 1990...Taking about opening minds, musically, that is. I am eternally thankful for this, at many levels. On such seismic times, it is hard to think of a single track or artist that could claim being everywhere then or even sticking to the then sign of times billboard, unless musically they were advancing what evolved later, as some of the other names mentioned above and some did in their own parcel.

"Justify" was released pre- Erotica era (as an introduction), it comes with The Immaculate Collection as a single that went straight to #1 despite it was banned from General views air time of the MTV's. This was inspired by Donna Summer's "Love To Love You Baby".

I'm baffled how others have been able to react to the Justify My Love video, showing the video and you guys feel you can't? I understand the concern that you may feel you could warned or worse removed from youtube, but how is it so many others are able to do what you feel you can't do? Also, if the video is available on youtube, then why should anyone worry about being taken down? It's just interesting how some get targeted for their videos, while others don't? And yes, I would say Madonna certainly was hoping to create a discussion and normalize what was depicted in the video. By your guy's reaction, I'm shocked in 2022 that there some who still feel uncomfortable seeing depictions like this. And once again, the very reason why Madonna takes on certain topics and/or explore certain imagery to allow people to be more comfortable.

That's Madonna in the early '90s with an attitude that was more sexually agressive(You wouldn'thave dared to live her 'Sex' book era)..But it's a granded that she was always an exibitionist by nature.I personally prefer her 'Love Profusion' side.

Yeah, this was not my style at the time, and I found it boring musically / vocally ..From memory, I believed the video was Madonna being deliberately controversial in an effort to get herself some shock-value publicity .. But now, I actually don't mind the song at all .. Funny the effect time has on our tastes .. Fun reaction, guys ! .. Tyler was stunned, but Marissa was cool and thoughtful as always.

Haha, I really like your video reactions and it's always nice to see for me (Gen X) how you (Gen Z) react to various videos. In this case it was really funny because it was obvious that you felt uncomfortable (which is OK). However I was really suprised that this still causes such a reaction in 2022 - 32 years after it was released. I saw it first when I was 18 in 1990 and I loved both the sultry song and the video. For me it was both new and very arty and way ahead of its time. Interestingly me and friends weren't shock. But maybe that's my European point of view. Sure, there were a lot of discussions, but my guess was that people secretly liked it but were afraid to admit it. It reminded when Basic Instinct hit the movies and everybody was talking about how scandalous it was. Me and my peers thought it's a damn good thriller, but nobody was shocked. In 1990 was a very revealing interview with Madonna on ABC which says a lot about society back then and now. Here's the link: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mqbdoKRufbV2qdk

Banned by MTV, this was only shown on tv in the US once on an ABC News show called Nightline where they interviewed Madonna and she spoke about censorship, her artistry, her responsibility as an artist (particularly in a very conservative America in midst of the AIDS crisis) Marissa summed it up perfectly when she said Madonna's goal was to open up conversations about sex. In the interview, she also talks about the Tylers who would rather "not see it" and goes on to question where we draw the line when it comes to censorship. It's an important interview and I recommend watching it especially if you're going to discuss "Erotica" because this kinda set the stage for that era.

she always fight for the voice of women, women sexuality in this case... Freedom to choose the way of love that you want. by the way, background voices are Lenny Kravitz, and another girl not credited. Kravitz wrote this song on sample bases of Public Enemy(¿?).Its was the first song in the world released on VHS format because Mtv refuse to pass the video so she was inteligent . I have tattoed 'justify my love' in my hand. I can't believe the sound on this song, everything, drums, synth, Lyrics, voices.....dammmmmmm!!

You should react then to Erotica uncensored version! ;) But it's "curious" how some people react so negative in front of sexuality...well, you dont need to like that or to do it, but to avoid to watch it as if it were something so horrible? it's just sex... it's human nature! :) Everyday we watch films with people killing people! why we dont say, I dont need to see that? because that is what is really horrible, not the human sexuality!
