Art is definitely subjective and considering everyone has different experiences, perspectives, and everyone processes information differently, it's not unusual for people to miss an artist's meaning, especially when a lot is being thrown at you at once. It can take time to absorb.

The hilarity is that it's not even supposed to be Jesus, but a particular saint - the name escapes me - that is the patron saint of mixed race people. White America interpreted it as Jesus, saw the burning crosses, saw the interracial love, and then Madonna told the church to kick rocks.

Kissing the feet is like kissing the feet of saints, veneration. It is a Catholic thing. It is about supplication. His name is Leon Robinson. The song can be about religious ecstasy and akin to sexual energy. Leon plays two characters in this video, one inspired by Saint Martin de Porres, and another a man who because of racial profiling was arrested for a crime he did not commit. The choir, the saint, are part of a dream. Saint Martin de Porres is a patron saint of people of color, and also one for racial harmony. So his inclusion in the video, along with the story of racial profiling, makes sense.

This was I think her 2nd or 3rd album. Anyway the video was shot be Mary Lambert who directed another on of her videos back in the 90''s. If you look at the Wikipedia page for the song you will be amazed. Not only was it the first song released from the album Like a Prayer this song for Madonna was worked on very hard by herself an Patrick Leonard. The music in her eyes had to really reflect what her vision of the song. Then the Choir was actually the Andre Crouch Choir, and she had to share the lyrics with him before he would sign on to have the songs chorus to sing as the choir. It was noted on the Wikipedia site that she had done all that she could to make this song as good as it could get. I mean she collaborated with the best in the industry. It release as #2 the first week on the charts but the following week it hit #1 later the Bon Jovi's Song "I'll be there for you " to the number one spot. The lyrics have been analyzed, taught in colleges and so much speculation about the meaning of the lyrics have also been discussed. The in Week 2 on the charts other artist were already sampling the lyrics. Like a Pray has been named or placed in the category of songs that changed or affected the world. She got a Pepsi commercial out of it for 5 million dollars. However, when it was released the catholic church threat to boycott Pepsi so the pulled the deal but Madonna was keep her 5 Million dollars. There is a pretty good version of the song and Vogue on the TV show Glee. Madonna had no problems with Ryan Murphy using the songs he chose because she opened her catalog to him. Because the generation had never heard the song before it had a short resurgence. It renter the charts top 400 songs or album I can't remember. The black actor's name is Leon and he acted in the role of the black man falsely arrested. Also he acted as the saint for people of color. I think also the scene of them kissing was speculation the she was kissing the saint but anyone who watched the video fully and not narrow mindedly would've not come to that conclusion. The video turned out to be a play which I thought was cool. The imagery just had a lot of symbolism and the narrow minded just can't perceive due to the stiff rod of them trying to control the masses. Anyway, I don't want pontificate here, I just really like the song and video till this day. BTW, I think the reason it was made like a play is because she had done a play in NY called "Speed the Plow" with other stars in the cast. But , like I said she worked hard on this song with the industry's best and she wanted to be as best as it could be before it was released.

You'll see she changes her look, style, messages in her music, etc..during the 80s..90s..2000..It will usually include a lot of dance music (she originally went to NY to be a dancer) some form of sexuality in most songs (some eras more blatanly than others) women empowerment, subliminal messages about social justice (like this song/video about profiling). I think she's also done a techno album at some point. Finally, she did have a period of "enlightenement" where she explored her spirituality. The last album I heard a couple of years ago was experimental..eclectic in it's genre...latin trap..."popish" hip hop..portuguese pop. She lives in Portugal now. Yeah, she definitely created controversy and a shift in the industry...when she came onto the scene.

Man, this video is complex, and it draws from catholic tradition in concepts and and imagery (kissing of feet, iconography of saints, spiritual ecstasy, stigmata, etc...) mixed with a very evident antiracist message. I mean, at a certain point people discussed Madonna in Universities because of the impact her music and videos were having!! I think maybe you are not familiar with the Catholic imagery, which is obviously fine, but I still kind of think you completely missed the complexity and intentions of this video because some things just seemed 'weird' to you. No hate here, I promise. It's just the vibe I get. On a different note, Madonna has soooo many sounds, all of them different. It might be worth to check out other songs (Vogue, Human Nature, Papa Don't Preach, Frozen, and many, many others...). I am telling you now that if you do so, you will find a treasure cove of video concepts and visual references. Ask fans for clarifications, should you need some!

This album was produced by Prince. The video is about a girl seeing another girl assaulted and the wrong guy is accused. The real attacker knows she witnessed it. Frightened she seeks shelter in a church and prays to a saint who gives her a religious ecstasy moment which gives her the courage to tell the truth. The video was controversial to say the least. She almost got kicked out of the Catholic church and she lost a multi million dollar deal with Pepsi over "making out with black Jesus amongst burning crosses." That said keep up. Her music is so different you get a different vibe with each album and song. She hates doing the same thing so much she even remixes old stuff in concert.

Madonna just knew how to brand and market herself in music videos. More Madonna please. New subscriber here. 👍

Also, she was dropped by Pepsi because they were scared the controversy surrounding the video would damage them by association, and they withdrew the commercial Madonna did for them (available on youtube!) which was so hyped up that it deserved its own world premiere during which it was broadcast in several countries at the same time. In true Madonna style, she remained defiant with the critics and publicly thanked Pepsi for the added controversy. She also kept the money they had paid her.

"Like a Prayer" begins with some strange unacredited "Prince" guitars. In the lyrics, Madonna introduced liturgical texts that are used during the Sacraments, alluding to her Catholic upbringing but playing with the context and giving way to sexual innuendo. In the video Madonna witnesses the murder of a woman by white men, but the crime is blamed by a black man who is arrested, which is why Madonna runs to a church apparently looking for strength so she can go to the police and tell her version of the facts.

Medina, Janet Jackson, Paula dual were all the video queens of the 80s and 90s. This video was very, very controversial. She practically had a Sue MTV and VH1 to play it because they refused to. The Catholic Church including Paul John Paul were an uproar over the imagery of this video. And, the people that portrayed the choir I think there was New Jersey mass choir or something - they were in a lot of trouble for being in the video and recording on the song. Madonna always made videos that were left up to the viewers imagination. She grew up Catholic and she was truly I believe in this video expressing freedom through truth.

Madonna's character had witnessed a crime take place and had seen a black man unjustly arrested for the crime. She went to her church to get divine intervention on what she should do. She laid on the bench and what I take from it is that she began dreaming and in her dream she was made aware that that man COULD be Jesus, and that it would be her job as a Catholic to save him. My take away is that all of the church and stigmata scenes and the burning crosses were part of her dream sequence. So after waking up she went and spoke up, testified or whatever, and he was released.
You have to let the video play instead of pausing it every 5 seconds.

Funny story. This video was released in 1989, when I was around nine or ten. It was my favorite music video. It gave me chills, even then. But I was forbidden from watching it. Not because of the racial mixing or even the burning crosses, but because Madonna pretty much told the Pope and the Catholic Church to kick rocks. My father told me she had a 'dirty mouth,' and so I'd always - for years - look at her mouth and I'd be confused and not see any dirt. This video was hugely controversial for the time period, the racial profiling, the burning crosses, the violence, and how Madonna told the Pope that if he wanted to see her, he could buy a ticket to her concert like anyone else. She lost a contract deal with Pepsi to use this song in their commercials. Now, here we are in 2021, and so much remains unchanged.
