Mamamoo are known to always be themselves and never act to play a role. What you see is what you get with Mamamoo. Unfiltered, always speak their mind and don't conform to the kpop standards.

Mamamoo have the most freedom of any girl group. Plus they are very involved in their music, they are the most credited female girl group

Good question about whether they're genuine or just acting. You get both in Hip. Hip is a combo of a diss track where they mock their haters as people who spit in their own faces with a message song that re-defines Hip to mean being true to yourself and doing your own thing rather than the usual slang meaning of cool or trendy. In the MV you see them as themselves in Mamamoo (the 1st Universe) and in three alternate universes playing women who are unusual in one way or another. But even though they're role playing, the various characters they portray represent aspects of their real selves such as Wheein as an artist (she painted the cover art for a solo album and a painting seen in the MV for a hit solo single), Moonbyul as a choreographer (she did the choreo for MMM's debut song), Solar as a boxer (as prep for the MV she took boxing lessons as a challenge for her yt channel Solarsido), and Hwasa as the President (she's aka Queen Hwasa because of her fierce, commanding stage presence). There are several points to all this. We all have multiple aspects to our personalities and we should feel free to express them fully so in the song MMM is encouraging people to be themselves. But the primary message of Hip is that everyone deserves respect regardless of their lifestyle, career or fashion choices rather than criticism for not fitting in with what's considered to be the norm, esp regarding stereotypical binary notions of things like gender and sexuality (hence the drag musicians in Solar's glam band and Moonbyul's androgynous wardrobe). Mamamoo has never fit into kpop's standards regarding looks, fashion, gender, sexuality or proper behavior by polite young ladies and consequently they've always been one of kpop's biggest shit magnets. Hwasa is the member most often targeted by malicious sm comments and she co-wrote the lyrics, which refer to several controversies over what she chose to wear (or not wear) to the airport. Internet bullying is a serious social issue that's too easily dismissed as just idiots making nasty comments. South Korea has one of the highest suicide rates in the world and besides the general public there have been a number of idol and celebrity suicides linked to malicious comments on sm. Mamamoo has been very vocal in their effort to combat internet bullying and they're always tried to encourage people to accept others for their uniqueness and to celebrate the full range of human diversity. So, as djvillan said, what you see is what you get with Mamamoo, but if you expect it to be the same thing over and over you're in for a bunch of surprises.

I think Mamamoo might be the most "themselves" group their is. They're not afraid to show who they are and say what they think and they've consistently shown this sincerity. Major examples are Hwasa on the show "I Live Alone", Mamamoo on variety shows and their MMMTV and their music in general. They have very personal messages in their songs. Their company let them sing songs about almost anything: from choosing panties, cooking fried rice, bullying, insecurity, women empowerment, those that are blatantly LGBT friendly and so much more.

The video i think your talking about, that show off their vocals, is mamamoo kiling voice. It's a compilation of a bunch of their songs ranging from their debut to the latest at that time 3 years ago. There's a version without editing called 'mamamoo killing voice dingo (raw unedited video)' this is because dingo accidentally uploaded the unedited version first then swiftly took it down and put the correct one, but lots of fans actually loved the unedited one more so i guess someone snatched it and uploaded it so if you really wanna see live vocals thats the video. Fun fact: (alledgedly cos i've never deep dived to find evidence of this) Solar is actually the reason why dingo's killing voice exist, cos it was originally just killing verse (which is for rappers), but solar said she really wanted to be on it so they created killing voice (for singers) thats why they're the first on it.

They do their own everything so they did the mixing as well.

Each member is playing 3 different professions which is why there are a lot of styles in there. The song is basically saying that whatever you do, wear, say, you're hip no matter what anyone else says.

The MAMAMOO members are among some of the most-credited idols in K-Pop as of Jan 2024 - Moonbyul actually has the most songwriting credits of all 3rd generation female idols at 119(2nd most credited famale artist overall... Yoon Mirae at 141), since she writes her own raps(and more) in almost all of the group’s songs. As well as contributing to the songwriting in many of them as well. - Solar has 41 credits to her name. She wrote the lyrics and composition for her solo song, “Spit it Out”. Composer on "Honey". - Hwasa has 47 credits. The lyrics to her solo song, “María”, were praised for its inventive and meaningful wordplay. ("Somebody" w/Loco). - Wheein has 10 credits (that I can find, maybe more) COULD use an Update as they have all released new/more music in 2024 - I'm sure they ALL have more, but I'm having trouble finding the info... if anyone can give me an UPDATE (TY)

They've got a bunch of songs that flex their vocals. Of their own discography, "I Miss You" is the most popular contender though.
