They are in his car, laying down on the bench seat (lots of old cars had one long bench seat for the front seat), and with the radio on, the dashboard lights would be on. Just bright enough to see in the dark. So because the dashboard lights are on, he can see 'paradise', meaning his girlfriend's (presumably) naked body.

No, dashboard lights aren't a metaphor. Picture two 17 year old kids, parked by a lake in a car, barely dressed. What's illuminating them? The lights on the dashboard. In this case, paradise is a bit of a metaphor for a woman's naked body, but the dashboard lights are just dashboard lights. Now, the baseball game, that WAS a metaphor (standard sex metaphors, "he got to first base" "he got to second base" etc...). And you do understand she DID give it up in the end. It took him promising and all, but she did give it up.

Kids used to park in the car after a date activity to spend some alone time. Having the car ignition in the accessory position allowed them to listen to the radio with the car off. The radio has a light coming from the dashboard. He could see 'paradise' by the dashboard light.

I hope you enjoyed the song. Meat was quite the performer. Jim Steinman written songs are generally heavy with the keyboards. They had a number of hits during the late 70's but the song I recommend is "I'd Do Anything For Love, But I Wouldn't Do That" Another gem of a rock theater performance. You might need to brush up on your Disney stories. Listen til the end to find out what he won't do...

Love this performance. They are not just great singers, they are (were) great actors! Meatloaf had almost as much experience in acting (theater, movies) as he did singing. I've been listening to this song for 40-ish years, and never get tired of it. Watching YT reactions to it is very fun...especially because so many people have no clue about Meatloaf. There is more! Much more to his music. Enjoy!

So, Jim Steinman and Michael Lee Aday (Meat Loaf - stage name) were really quite the pair. You can tell that Steinman had a background in writing theatrical musicals. With Meat Loaf's powerful voice, their album "Bat Out of Hell" became a blockbusting rock opera. This was an album many '70s teens group up with. Definitely worth checking more songs out.

RIP to the great meatloaf, a true stage troubadour! Also a good actor, I think I last saw him in fight club. His album, bat out of hell, has never been out of the top 200 for over 40 years! Then his 2 follow up albums, back in to hell, then out, the beast is loose! Have proly sold over 200 mil copies! He got famous from the movie, Rocky Horror, u should watch! When casting the movie, the producers directors brought in all the top singers, no one could handle all the high notes with power and breath control. By chance, he wanders into the audition. They tell him the problems they are having. He listens to the main song a couple times, then tells the director, hit the lights hit the playback, ACTION! Then belts out the dong perfectly! Looks at the director and says, so what's the problem? The baseball announcer is Vin Scully. He listened to the blank space outro space, twice. Then addlibbed his part twice, nailed it on the next attempt! His song on the next album, I'll never do that, a classic! But really listen to this whole album, it's all about one guy's life, from teens to middle aged! Oddly enough meatloaf always said, he wasn't a singer, that he was a stage actor who sometimes could sing a part for the character perfectly!!

When we parked with the car radio playing, there was a soft glow of light from the dashboard that backlit the front seat action. The baseball bases are a metaphor for progressing thru foreplay. Rounding third on his way to 'home plate' she abruptly stops him and gives the ultimate ultimatum... This whole Rock Opera (BAT OUT OF HELL)was so clever and well done.

My then high school girlfriend and I were in my car listening to this IRL. Everything was the same except we didn't get married so didn't have to deal with that. We're still FB friends. His real name was Marvin Lee Aday. He got his nickname (which was legally changed) by his dad when he was still a baby because he looked like a blob of meat. He has many movie appearances over the years. Including but not limited to "Rocky Horror Picture Show", "Fight Club" and "Wayne's World". Btw they were BOTH regretting their commitment to each other. Sadly, we lost Jim and Meat within a few months of each other 😇😇 This song was written by the late Jim Steinman, he also played keyboard on this song. I wish I could have seen them in concert but sadly it never happened. 🙄 I still have the "Bat out of hell" LP

In the 1950s through the 1980s American cars had a light that shined toward the floor. It was mounted on the underside of the dashboard. It's main purpose was to allow the passenger read a map without ruining the night sight of the driver. It also illuminated the lower half of the driver and passenger. In this case it had sexual connotations. It was the boomers theme song of bad decisions leading to lifetime consequences since there was no effective birth control until almost the 1970s. Good reaction, I think you got it.

In the U.S. the cars instrument cluster is called the dashboard. It is lit up at night time, hence the "glow" from the dashboard light? Hope this helps. It is common for kids to go out "parking". To "make out" as there is no other way to get privacy from family members. You are both alone in the car, with the "dashboard light".

It's a rarity to hear a song that describes an event from more than one person's perspective. There is, however, a trio of songs by Marty Robbins that describe the end of a relationship from the viewpoints of three people. The songs are from a genre that might be unfamiliar to you (Country-Western) and created by one of the best singer-songwriters in American music history. He scored hits in several music genres. It's a must-hear set for someone like you exploring the roots of music. Most interesting is that the first song, El Paso, was released in 1959; the second song, Feleena (from El Paso), was released in 1966; and the last of the trio, El Paso City, was released in 1976. I hope I have piqued your interest, Rere!

Dashboard light is not a metaphor. Back in the day kids used to park and make out in their cars at different locations. The dashboard of the car had lights on it, ofen from the car radios playing. That's why the baseball game comes on as well. That was something that might have been on the car radio on a hot summer night. :) Of course the baseball game and rounding the bases IS a metaphor for making out and sex.

Great reaction....... Meatloaf always described himself as an Actor who sang...... He has a Large Roster of Movie/TV appearances, Including.... "Rocky Horror Picture Show," "Blackdog," "Fight Club," "Tenesious G: Pick of Destiny" Female Vocals - The voice you hear is Ellen Foley who Performed/Sang on the studio album, The lady in the Video is Karla DeVito who Sang/Performed on Tour.... The audio for the videos wasn't quaitly enough to use so they over-dubbed the studio version..... Other Videos from this albumn with concert feel "Bat out of Hell" and "Two out of Three Ain't Bad"..... Meatloaf is a Legend..... Rumor/Urban Legend is; He would put so much effort into his stage perfomances, that it was comon for him to collaspe between the stage and dressing room, it was so common that staff would just bring him a pillow/cushion and water and not interupt him.

4:59 For this baseball play-by-play sequence done by Phil Rizzutto, Meatloaf ran around the studio, like he's running the bases in a baseball game as a way of helping Phil Rizzutto keeping pace with his play-by-play dialog

Back in the day, car dashboards were lit up with actual white light bulbs from the front. She , and the situation was the "paradise", light up by the dashboard. Meatloaf is a very theatrical performer. One of a kind.

The dashboard light is literally the light coming from the car dashboard. Not a mediphor.

Yes. “Paradise” was the metaphor. The dashboard light was a literal dashboard light.
