Muskogee, Oklahoma has a population of about 37,000 people, and holds the Museum for the Five Civilized Tribes. A small city. And the term Okie means an Oklahoman. My parents were Okies from Hobart, Oklahoma. And now, you know all about it!

Exactly. During the dust bowl era of the 1930's - the Dirty Thirties - when people were going to California after losing their farms, Californians started referring to Oklahomans as "Okies". It was done in a derogatory way. Welp, now we call ourselves "Okies" because we're proud of our pluck, determination and perseverance. Amen! For those who don't know: the dust bowl mainly happened up in the panhandle because it's flat and kinda dry.

During the Great Depression many people from this region moved to California and they were called Okies. Merle was born in Cal. but his parents had moved there from Muskogee Oklahoma.

I think it's unfortunate that Merle became so identified with this song, making him seem like a totally right-wing redneck. His political views were more complex than that, and he came to regret the way this song typed him. Politics aside, Merle Haggard is, in my view, the greatest country artist of all time. That soulful voice with such depth, the songwriting and arrangement of songs by others, the way he could arrange a song and make a classic out of it, and his musicianship as part of the performance. Haggard is country music in its essence. I could make a list of at least 50 songs that he recorded that are major or minor classics. And Haggard transcended the country genre without doing the kind of cheesy country pop that has dominated for many years.

Merle’s parents left Oklahoma for California, where the term ‘Okie’ was a very derogatory remark. But later after he became a star, his bus went through the small town of Muskogee. One of the band members joked, “I bet they don’t smoke marijuana in Muskogee”. Everybody kept adding lines and a great tongue in cheek conservative anthem was born.

Merle Haggard is a legend. But I have to admit the first time I heard the song title I laughed and hurt my stepmom's feelings. Turns out she was from Muskogee. Song is funny but Merle had a real voice!

I live 25 miles from Muskogee, in Tahlequah (if you think Muskogee was hard to say, lol). An okie is someone who was born in Oklahoma. Original Oklahomans, not transplants. FYI, the Muskogee Roughers football team just won the state championship today.

The men then cut their hair so that the earlobes could be seen, and shorter than the collar. No facial hair was preferred. The people who still think the San Francisco lifestyle is abhorrent.
