Couple of things: 1) Boy came back from war. Lost his limbs, hearing, eyesight, everything, due to a landmine. 2) Clips were from a movie called "Johnny Got His Gun". 3) The fast "choppy" thrashing before the solo is SOS for "kill me". That's what the officer was saying in the film, "over and over again, kill me". Metallica played that. This song is a masterpiece.

This is an anti-war song inspired by the book "Johnny Got His Gun" by Dalton Trumbo. The clips in the video are from the movie made from that book. Metallica bought the rights so that they could use the footage. The book is crazy intense and I do recommend it. This song will mean much more after reading it. Also, I would recommend having the lyrics handy for all of these songs that you are listening to for the first time. So much more meaning in the lyrics when combined with the feel of the music. I really enjoy seeing you all react to the music that I grew up with. My kids and their friends are constantly exposing me to different music and I am always better because of it. Music is the universal language...put yourself where the artist is in the moment and feel the feels...no better way to express humanity in my opinion.

I will explain the nature of metal music - and this speaks to a lot of your comments: "I feel like the guitar has a voice and has something to say" "I feel the anger" "This makes me want to throw a chair" etc. Metal music has epic and profound lyrics like old-school rap. In fact metal and rap are very similar in their cadences and flow. And rap even samples a lot of metal bass riffs. Metal music is predicated on telling deep stories that speak to some serious and often times dark shit. Just like good rap music does....or did. Think of the lyrics as painting a picture like a movie does. Every good movie has music that enhances the scene. Try watching some horror without the music - not as captivating. Try watching an action scene or adventure scene without the music in the movie - not as exciting or adrenalizing. The instruments in the metal band are playing the mood music to enhance the emotion, to make you feel a sort of way that is congruent with the lyrical message and imagery. Metal music and Classical music are both the two most powerfully moving music out there; so you can see the correlation on how that music is composed in the song - to affect your emotions. Yes the guitar is talking, yes the drums are beating a war like pattern and rhythm to enhance and escalate the feelings of doom or aggression. Just like in a movie. As many have said the movie clips in this music video is from Johnny Got His Gun. The title "One" is asking the question "Well what about that ONE?" In the book that the movie was based off of, it says that a person left in the condition that the young soldier is in after the mortar shell has about one-in-a-million chance of ever surviving the injuries. Well....if there's one in a million....what do you do with that One? Now imagine this happening to someone that went to war so that you can stay home and have freedoms. When you get a moment - thank a soldier for their service.

Sigh, I knew the video version would confuse all of them. Which is why I am starting to feel that the only real way for this group to react to videos is by using "lyric versions". Because when you have the lyrics in front of you, you KNOW that the song about wanting to die because the horrors of war has taken everything from you physically, mentally and emotionally. That due to a landmine, without arms, legs, speech, hearing, sight, that your body becomes an endless torture chamber of darkness and silence, cut off from the "outside world", slowly driving you insane. Hey, I know this was 6 months plus but appreciate you guys taken the time to listen to this. This was when Metallica was still respected as true metal. Even if you didn't get it from the first time listening you still gave it a chance. Music in my opinion is the glue that links all of us together.We all enjoy it and can find commonality in music no matter what category. I love metal but I also grew up on the Suger Hill Gang, public Enemy and discovered Robert Cray later. I think music has a little bit of everything for everyone no matter for the most part what it is.

Love seeing you dude's experience this shit. The song is speaking of a Veteran. A soldier who has lost more then most. Metallica - Lyrics: I can't remember anything Can't tell if this is true or dream Deep down inside I feel to scream This terrible silence stops me Now that the war is through with me I'm waking up, I cannot see That there's not much left of me Nothing is real but pain now Hold my breath as I wish for death Oh please, God, wake me Back in the womb it's much too real In pumps life that I must feel But can't look forward to reveal Look to the time when I'll live Fed through the tube that sticks in me Just like a wartime novelty Tied to machines that make me be Cut this life off from me Hold my breath as I wish for death Oh please, God, wake me Now the world is gone, I'm just one Oh God, help me Hold my breath as I wish for death Oh please, God, help me Darkness Imprisoning me All that I see Absolute horror I cannot live I cannot die Trapped in myself Body my holding cell Landmine Has taken my sight Taken my speech Taken my hearing Taken my arms Taken my legs Taken my soul Left me with life in hell

I am a 55 year old Metal Head and this song is my #1 most favorite song and music video of all time. Johnny got his gun was an old anti-war movie that Metallica used in the One video. The story is of a soldier who gets hurt in the war and all he wants for them to do for him is to put him out of his misery. It is cool to watch you guys explore Metallica in these videos. Right on.

The movie in the video is called "Johnny got his gun". The clips show that he has lost all his limbs, his ability to speak, or do anything for that matter. He can't fight to live or die. He's at the mercy of everyone around him. His father taught him Morse code as a boy and thats the only way he can communicate, and begins asking for them to kill him, over and over again. Love the song and always thought the video with it was so haunting. Chills every time

Not in a literal sense, many combat veterans feel this because of PTSD. Yeah...It's a movie soundtrack, but we completely feel it, not a physical sense, but in a mental capacity. You need to listen to Welcome Home (Sanitarium), Master of Puppets, The Unforgiven, Enter the Sandman, Fade to Black, and Nothing Else Matters. The guy was blown apart. He can't communicate except Morris code. He's begging to die.

Metallica grabs the listener's attention with music, but they hold it with lyrics. They are unforgettable. Edit: From a former soldier's wife, if you give little thought to the military on Veteran's Day, let it be about those wounded.🙏 Also, Five Finger Death Punch has a song called, "Wrong Side Of Heaven" that is excellent.

I've watched a couple of your Metallica reaction vids now. When listening to any of their music, please for your own sakes google the meaning of behind each Metallica song and find their printed lyrics (especially for their 80's albums) so y'all won't be so confused and asking your audience to do the work for you. Respectfully, A lifetime Metallica fan

I've never seen any reaction to this song where the scenes and dialogue from the movie were completely ignored. You guys were not giving this song the attention it deserved. Less time talking and asking questions, more time listening and getting the point. This kid went to war and came back unable to see, missing all of his limbs. He was just a torso and a head. And the song is about his fear and pain. His one wish, to die. It's very powerful. I'm only halfway thru the video, Im sure you will eventually pick up on the POINT of the song. The doctors said he wasn't suffering but he was in torture. The nurse tried to put him out of his misery but the other doctor stopped her. And they just let the guy rot in a room. This is one of the best classic Metalica songs, and you guys completely talked over it. It's cool, but you should do this again and pay attention. This was based on a real movie. "Johnny Got His Gun" And anti war movie. Databyter

y'all need to listen to the lyrics for context - aint gonna get 10k if you just talking about the 'vibe' and not the actual lyrics. its about an injured soldier who has lost his ability to speak and see and also lost his arms and legs. he's in a mental prison and wants to die. he's about as helpless and isolated as a conscious person caould be
@coltoncouncil85802 жыл бұрын
It starts out "story of the video" the dad talking about honor and having to serve the country when he gets older but basically telling the kid "do you think you can be able to handle it", during the war in video near the solo the lyrics says "Landmine has taken my sight, speech, hearing, arms, legs, soul, and it's left him with a life in hell" the man is literally a torso and can't do anything, having doctors experiment on him, unable to communicate but only through Morse Code (...---...) means S.O.S and then telling them to "just kill me, I don't want to live" P.S. his father thought him Morse Code before he grew up and went to war. Also this was based off of a true story that's why they wrote the song since they really support the military and troops that fight for all of us 🤘❤🤘

This song deals with the movie Johnny Got His Gun (book then movie) by Dalton Trumbo as a middle finger to the perils of war. It deals with a young man who gets hit by a shell, loses his eyes, ears, nose, arms and legs. He's basically a trunk but has all his memories. He's thinking back on his life.

So back in the 80's James was introduced by his brother to a book he read talking about a WWI Vet that servired a motor attract, losing all his limbs and face causing the man to be trapped in his own body. James was so touched that he wrote this song. Due to his childhood, he felt as this man being trapped in his own skin. This song was what pretty much introduces them to the younger GenX'ers like myself. Justice for All was their biggest hit before the Black album came out. Metallica is the biggest and most famous Metal band there is. Loved watching your reaction to this great song.

James Hetfield is considered by many the greatest rhythm guitar player who ever lived. He's the one writing and playing all the fingerstyle melodies and heavy riffs while singing the vocals. Kirk Hammett on lead is way lower on the list of guitar players, but he's perfect for this band and a legend in his own right. James plays many of the solos himself. He's a monster talent. One of the best ever to stand on a stage...

Love what you fellas do for real. Big swing and miss on this one for you though. A soldier woke up from a land mine and lost literally everything and was just a stump of pain and wanted to die. He communicated that via morse code. It is a tragic but real song of what our dismembered veterans go through. As a veteran this song deserved hit me hard and deserved a lot more respect. Will still keep watching. Give this another listen between yourselves and have the lyrics with it. It will have a totally different meaning for you.
