She was such a beautiful woman, a beautiful singer, and a beautiful soul. One thing that always blows my mind is that I only discovered this song, and city pop in general a couple years ago, but this song feels so familiar and nostalgic, it’s as if I’ve heard it all my life - or in another lifetime even. It’s so magical.

one thing I learned from listening so much Japanese pop/ rock music, is this underlying melancholy. It's not sadness per se, but kind of an " look at the way life is" that they have as a society. Here we look at society as something we need to do the best to ensure It's not going to forget the most important things, and win against ourselves. Japanese people tend to " accept" that life is the way It is, and only THEN find a way to overcome sadness. At least this Is what I took after watching their culture so much.

Natural disasters like typhoons and earthquakes are a constant reminder of us being so little to the mother nature/world with almost no place to escape to. When (not if) the time of survival hits us, our preferences gotta go out of the window. That doesn't necessarily mean unhealthy, but can go into major depression when it becomes extreme. Music is our way to face our feelings to somewhat make sense.

This is not a wife song but a girl who is thinking back a lover who left her almost a year ago. From the lyrics 'Stay with Me, banging the midnight door begged not to go home.....And that season is just around the corder...' Miki Matsubara was born in 1959 and died 2004 at age 43. This song was never a huge hit back when it was first released in 1979, maybe a decent hit and more like a one hit wonder kind a song. According to Wiki, she had been working in music industry from after high school to 2001. I am Japanese and lived through those years in Japan but I don't recall her at all. The song got so popular last a few years - probably the most attention and success it ever received.

Time to cry. Miki was diagnosed with uterine cervic cancer, which she kept a secret for a long time from people and carried on with her music career. she battled cancer for 3 years. 2 months before her death, miki wished nobody would listen to her music and said she had regretted her music career as a whole, because she spent her life being too focused on making music and didn't live her life fully enough. miki spent the last 2 months of her life with her family, and later passed away at the age of 44. she told her husband that she wished she could restart her life again and live it more fully.

When this song was released back in 1979, I was a college kid, who didn't know this at all. In either 1979 or 1980, it did not come into the J-pop yearly top 100. It is very interesting to see this song has now become world famous. This sounds like a lost love song anyway. I would recommend you go next to Tasogare My Love by Junko Ohashi hit in 1979 if you like this type of tempo.

We will introduce the evergreen "Chuo Freeway" released in 1976 by Yumi Matsutoya (known as Yumi Arai at the time), who has been at the top of the Japanese City Pop scene for 50 years, from the dawn of the city pop era to the present day.🙂 This song is included in Yumi Arai's fourth studio album, "14th Moon." The title comes from the Central Expressway, which runs west from the center of Tokyo and was built for the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. The song describes the scenery of the area around Fuchu City, Tokyo, including the US military base in Japan (fully returned in 1974), the Suntory Musashino Brewery, and Tokyo Racecourse, which can be seen when heading from Chofu to Hachioji on the Chuo Expressway. This song is based on the memories of Yumi Arai's future husband, producer Masataka Matsutoya, when he used to drive her to Hachioji on his way home from work. It was also selected as a theme song for the Studio Ghibli film "Kiki's Delivery Service" released in 1989, but was not selected because it contained specific place names in Tokyo and did not fit with the film, which was set in Europe. Another song by Yumi Arai, "Rouge no Dengon," was used instead. Yumi Arai's "Contrail" is also used as the theme song for another Miyazaki Hayao work, "The Wind Rises" 😌
