To quote a poster below: "Welp, it looks like you've done all the Moody Blues I would recommend," SERIOUSLY? This is one of the best groups in rock history -- progressive while also being able to do it in three - four minutes instead of stretching things out to an entire album side. All great songwriters, singers, musicians, and every single thing they've done is full of memorable melodies. No, this is just the beginning of an investigation into this amazing group. Justin Hayward is one of the most underrated guitarists out there, and one of the most melodic songwriters of the rock era.
@kentclark64202 жыл бұрын
I would say Justin's rooted in classical guitar, and would fit in with playing guitar in an orchestra. But he has used that base to branch out into other styles, as well, and it's his diversity that makes him so good.

There was always a thought provoking message to a lot of the early songs. 60s-80s with songs like Question - Ride my Seesaw and so many more. Rebellious anti war or a song about drugs that sounds like a lovely little song about playing on a see saw. They were brilliant at doing this without upsetting the powers that be. Great vid Harry. The Moody Blues were great. 4 Lead singers in the band, with Justin and John, both who also played guitar, bass, cello and piano, and Mike Pindar on Mellotron, organ, and piano. Ray on flute, sax, and a few other wind instruments, and Graham on drums and all sorts of percussion instruments. I was lucky enough to see them live one time. Hit, after hit, from their first 8 albums. It was concert that rocked my ears.

This is a song written by drummer/poet Graeme Edge and Justin Hayward. I believe this is naming the problems of the world and offering that the only solution is for you and me being aware and that if there is a end to the world, it could be stopped But mostly there are problems and we, the Moodies, are just asking the questions. The lyrics that state "You're an ocean full of faces And you know that we believe We're just a wave that drifts around you Singing all our hopes and dreams is during the late 60's and early 70's, fans believed the Moodies had "the answer", they were considered like some guru's and fans treated them as such. This was the Moodies answer. This band not only has beautiful music, harmony and the lyrics are as relevant now as they were in the 60's and 70's.

You might enjoy "Question" if you liked that intro. and for a similar theme from them there's "The Story In Your Eyes". (Actually they have lots of great intros - "Send Me No Wine" is another one) I think the forest fire in the valley refers to the South African veld, where early humans may have appeared. A leafless tree in Asia could refer to things like napalm or Agent Orange used in the Vietnam War, causing deforestation. It's a list of things that are wrong with the world - such things have always made people wonder if the end is coming soon, or if it would be better if it did.

A great huminitarian song reminding us that Lord is everything--Love is everything--Truth is everything. Bless you for this vid, my Brother. It all starts with you and me. A bunch of "you & me's doing the work. The Moody Blues were great writers who delved into different spectrums of music. Justin Hayward and the rest illustrated that music is a messagae, no different in the Congo where people's lives depended on knowing what various beats and rythms meant; to communicate to other tribes the conditions that lie ahead. Their music is other-wordly.

Harri, cudos to you for reacting to You and Me. I have been waiting YEARS for this, as I believe this is one of the most majestic MB songs on what might be their most majestic album. And considering their catalog, that says a LOT. Seventh Sojourn was the second "rock" album I ever purchased (Elton John's Honky Chateau was the first - we can certainly talk about that another time). I remember being absolutely dumbstruck by You and Me, Lost in a Lost World, Land of Make Believe, etc. in the same way you seem to experience to the Moodies. To paraphrase one of your observations, I could not pigeon-hole this music, I could not relate it to anything I had ever heard before, it didn't fit any genre I knew of - it was just music - sublime, wonderful, uplifting, like a jolt of brain adrenaline that made me see and hear and understand on a higher level. There have been other bands and musicians that affect me in a similar manner, but the Moodies were the first, and their body of work has stayed with me through the years.

It really helps to have the context of the whole album - nestled between "Isn't Life Strange?" and "Living in a Land of Make Believe" to finish with "I'm Just a Singer (in a Rock & Roll Band)" really expands on a lot of the themes in this song (and vice versa).

Harri, this was the "Moodies' " last album, their Seventh Sojourn...until they came together for several more albums, '70s and '80s. My Senior High Math teacher in Miami saw I had a keen ear for music. He came to me in class one day and asked if I had any of their albums. When I said I hadn't, he said this was THE one to start with (it was 1972, the year this album was released). I....never.....looked....back! And, Harri, I had tears just now, watching your reactions to this song. I've never met anyone YET who loves this group as I.....until meeting you! This song was about the Vietnam war. He said this in an interview, and if you listen you can hear it pretty plainly. "There's a leafless tree in Asia" refers to the horrible Agent Orange America's army used to "defoliate" the forests so they could more easily kill the enemy; it's one reason the war was so unpopular at the time (and rightly so). Because this conflict between us kids and the adult idiots who insisted on prosecuting this unjust war was, at times, violent, the entire world saw how much the war, was hated. There was a lot of music that alluded to that; this song definitely does. Meanwhile, it is truly one of my favorites, it's just so well written and sung and performed; that album uses a lot of incidental percussion that makes it unique. You should hear the whole thing. And then you need.....TO OUR CHILDREN'S CHILDREN'S CHILDREN. You have to hear that to finally comprehend just how major this band was.

Just discovered your channel.... This is one of my all-time favorite Moody Blues tunes, and in the fan community it always topped lists of "favorite songs we've never heard played live." About 10 years ago Justin heard that, said he hadn't known, and then they added it to the concert set list. There are plenty of fan-posted videos of those live performances. Interestingly, on the studio recording part of Justin's guitar intro is thought to have been double-tracked (with the second guitar playing a harmony line). The live performance lacks that harmony track, but it sure is fun to see Justin's left hand flying up and down the strings at warp speed, not missing a note. I was fortunate enough to hear it played live a couple of times at least.

It is said in India in the spiritual world the more moody you are, the more spiritual you are apt to become. That is when the Moon orbits sround the Earth, the 1st 15 days are sukila paksha where the person is more geared towards materiality. The next 15 days when the Moon is moving towards the Sun is called Krishna paka where the person is more geared towards seeking God, that is more towards spirituality. This is known as Krishna paksha. And that is why this band is called The Moody Blues.

@HarriBest Reactions ...Your consideration of the song meaning was very insightful. Made me think of a song I found long ago, called "One Note Samba," an instrumental on an album I'd bought, which featured a mix of artists. Though I can't remember the band or group attributed, the song's mention on the back of the album cover described it as being "like the crest of a wave." And the song indeed was like that! I get that same amazing feeling with much of this Moody Blues piece! (Not saying it is a samba, of course.) The music and lyrical meaning of "You and Me" rides the top of the seemingly endless wave, carrying us to the final metaphorical shore. Love it! Great pick, Craig!

Find the backing track (Beckthorn's backing)for this one and go on a relentless,yet magic,carpet ride. This song appeals to human decency. Reminding us that we truly are all we've got. One another

I have never read anything about what kind of recording gear Mike had at Beckthornes. The production values on that exceed that of the other six albums, it is so clean, spacious, and powerful. Mike would have acquired the first 16 track if it was invented by then. Mike owned one of two existing 4 manual Chamberlin Rivera 800. It is used on this track?

Craig, great submission from the legendary Moody Blues. They are one of my favorite bands from the late 60s-70s. Another excellent review, Harri! For Moody Blues fans, I suggest checking out an outstanding album by Justin Hayward and John Lodge-- The Blue Jays (especially from track 5 on). kzbin.info/aero/PL4qgULCZHCwI3C39IGo3ZAFW7TCpLa1MM I used to rattle the windows while playing this album. Even better with earbuds or headphones.
