I love Mott, one of the best Glam-Rock bands ever, they, David Bowie and the Spiders from Mars and T Rex were a huge influence on the 70s and 80s and had many great songs. Try All the Way to Memphis next. I saw them twice and were rocking and unique, with there own sound. The incredible part of those 2 concerts were the 'unknown' bands opening for them: the first show it was Aerosmith just before they released their first album and the 2nd time it was Queen, making their first American tour with Mott. These bands freaked us out and we knew they would be big in time. Those are the kinds of bands Mott toured with. Enjoy! 🎸

Others have mentioned they were part of the early-mid 1970s UK Glam Rock era, that David Bowie wrote the song for them as they were struggling at the time, and that Queen supported them on tour, and listed a number of their other songs - of these, my favourite is 'Roll Away The Stone' (especially the video from the UK's Top of the Pops TV show), a catchy glam rock/pop song. This band is very important in the history and development of the 1970s UK Glam Rock look and sound.

"I need TV when I got T Rex (sarcasm)" - best line ever. T Rex was the original glam rock band before David Bowie, Mott the Hoople, and Roxy Music. Funny that this song was the first to diss The Beatles and The Stones. Punk rock bands would follow with similar statements (like The Clash's "phony Beatlemania"). Of course I love The Beatles and The Stones and glam rock and punk. But each rock genre had to distance itself from the previous.

*I think I can tell this story because the statute of limitations has expired* Once upon a time, at a bar in Kent, Ohio, a friend of mine had won tickets on the radio to go see Mott the Hoople at a place called Filthy McNastys. It was a small live music venue, probably held about 150 people. It was nothing more, really, than a horseshoe shaped bar with a stage in the corner, about 3 ft. high. So, about 30 minutes before showtime, my friend and I are standing at the bar near the stage, lined up about 3 deep to get a drink. Someone next to us started the pre-game festivities by sharing a "clove cigarette" and handed it to me(yes, in the bar. It was shoulder-to-shoulder people and they couldnt tell where it was coming from or didnt care). I in turn, turned around and handed it to some short dude with curly hair, almost like a fro, wearing a brown leather vest, dark aviator sunglasses and drinking a beer. He partakes, hands it back to me, lifts up his sunglasses, smiles and says, "All we need now is some grams!" Then he went onstage and played. It was Ian Hunter. You should check out "Once Bitten, Twice Shy" and "All the Way From Memphis". Cheers! EDIT: this song was written by David Bowie. He offered it to QUEEN, but they declined. And then he remembered this new band he had seen, that he really liked. So he got in touch with their management and gave it to them.

Bruce Dickinson (lead singer of Iron Maiden) covered 'All the young dudes' for his solo album in 1990 🔥🔥🤘🤘 This track was written by David Bowie and given to his mates in Mott the Hoople in 1972. The band was very underrated in the 70's, but were a big influence on British rock bands like Queen, Def Leppard, Iron Maiden... Mott the Hoople was never a massive name in music outside of Europe... they had a US following. But a lot of UK bands in the 70's (Slade, The Sweet, Buzzcocks, Roxy Music, etc.) never got that worldwide acclaim that bands like Black Sabbath, Genesis, Queen, Thin Lizzy, etc. got.

David Bowie was a fan and offered them a couple of songs to record. They turned down the first (suffragette city), then Bowie played them this one Ian Hunter (the singer) thought ‘is he out of his mind? This is incredible). It was a hit. Saved the band. Ian Hunter is an incredible songwriter himself and still out there doing it at 80 years old. There is a fantastic version of this on video from the Freddie Mercury tribute concert...Hunter; Bowie, mick Ronson (his last ever live performance), Queen, members of Def Lepoard. Very emotional performance. It may not make much sense but this became an anthem for this generation. Also...if you want to hear some ASS-KICKING rock n roll, the medley from Mott the Hoople live. 16 minutes of rnr bliss

This was a major UK Glam hit written by David Bowie for the band. The vocal style is part of a Jazz and Folk-Rock tradition of describing situations people or narratives with rapid-fire syllables and little melodic movement over a bed of changing chords. Bob Dylan helped popularize the style while acts like Tom Petty kept it alive for years. The same sing/talk Jazz/Folk style had already branched off before this into the Gil Scott Heron/Last Poets path that led to Rap/Hip-Hop, as well, but the roots are quite similar. These particular lyrics use "jive talk", sci-fi imagery, and UK Jazz slang to describe a bunch of youth stereotypes what would alarm parents in the early 1970s and to show solidarity with the bored teenagers over the general state of authority and gloom that descended on the UK in the 1970s. Glam Rock was an early 1970s Pop movement that dominated the UK and much of Europe and Australia for the first half of the 1970s, while only managing to have a handful of major US hits in that time. Glam music (and fashion) music was mostly about youth, androgyny, outer space, 50s Rock'n'Roll, sex, and a vague sense of rebellion. It was largely guitar-based and upbeat Boogie-style Rock with lots of production flourishes or stylistic excess in arrangement or presentation. A lot of major artists got their big break in the Glam scene or flirted with the genres very early in their careers, like David Bowie, Elton John, Roxy Music, Queen, 10cc, Sparks, and ELO. There were also Glam-adjacent US acts, like KISS, Alice Cooper, Jobriath, New York Dolls, Iggy & The Stooges, and the soundtrack from the Rocky Horror (Picture) Show. Lou Reed had an international 1972 hit with the David Bowie-produced "Walk on the Wild Side" before slinking back into obscurity. Hell, even ᗅᗺᗷᗅ got their start working within the Glam idiom with their songs "Waterloo", "Ring Ring", and "S.O.S.". Other major Glam acts (who all had several hits apiece) include T. Rex, The Sweet, Slade, Gary Glitter, Alvin Stardust, Wizzard, Mud, Suzi Quatro, and of course, Mott the Hoople. And they had several. "All the Young Dudes" was their biggest hit (and only US hit), but they had other great songs like "Honaloochie Boogie", "All the Way to Memphis", and "Roll Away the Stone". If y'all can view the vocal style through the lens I described, try to give these other songs and artists a shot. I've seen y'all liking a lot of Glam stuff already, like "Bennie and The Jets", "Space Oddity", and "The Ballroom Blitz". Keep digging.

This genre was called Glam Rock, anything went for clothing, makeup and hair. Bowie wrote this song and helped produce some of their music, he did the same for Lou Reed on his "Transformer" album from the same period. T-Rex was mentioned in the song, another Glam rock band. It was fun, care-free and let the freaks feel they belonged somewhere, the misunderstood, those on the outside looking in. The Kinks had an album and song called 'Misfits' that's as good a label as any.

You know some of the best songs don't have to spell everything out for you, they leave it up to the listeners imagination, that way people that listen to the song can form their own ideas of "what news". Foe instance take The Doors 'Riders On The Storm'.........."There's a killer on the road...his brain is squirmin like a toad...take a holiday......... let your children play...... Asia would be asking......Who'd he kill? What's the name of the road he's on?.......There's many different type of toads, what kind was that?.......What holiday, Fourth Of July? I know, maybe Presidents Day?.......Whose children? Are they playing in a park or maybe the street? Oh Lordy, please let it not be in a street, like maybe a freeway? I think you get the point, maybe?
@oscarwilde66492 жыл бұрын
Exactly! As I commented earlier, they made themselves look foolish in this reaction. They NEVER pull lyrics up & simply try to discern the song's meaning by reading said lyrics. They repeat bits & pieces of a song, including choral phrases/sentences, and attempt to lazily "decipher" the song's meaning that way lol. In one reaction, they even had the lyrics shown to them as the song played ("Gimme Shelter"), yet couldn't figure out that, "War, Children, It's just a shot away" was an obvious reference to the Vietnam War. A startled & confused Asia pondered, "I wonder what was going on at that time for them to write the statement, 'War, Children, It's just a shot away'"? Later in the song she was shocked by (and still bewildered), "Rape, Murder,...away". A simple Google query as to the year the song was made ('69) might have cleared up a few cerebral cobwebs.

Takes me back to school ... nioce.... In England i mean... Mott the Hoople , Roxy Music, Chicory Tipp, Slade, The Sweet, Wizard, Argent all great early brit pop

If David Bowie was a band it would be Mott the Hoople. They were fashion forward friends pioneering the musical universe. Older folks would pick up on the references to T. Rex, Beatles, Stones, and grandfatherly music. Their name throws you off. As does the image on the album. Neither suggests how revolutionary they actually were.

I'd agree with you that 'if David Bowie was a band' back then it'd be these guys - or Roxy Music.

It has a hypnotic melody that has a haunting melody in the chorus part too!! The song is real catchy that has you wanting more. First time hearing it I felt all those things I mentioned and felt to as if " back in the days" if you will and had my mind thinking 1969's and so on. Nice song!!

This song, their first bonafide hit, isn't typical of their sound at all. Listen to their earlier stuff like "Rock And Roll Queen" or "Thunderbuck Ram" to be bowled over by their raw rocking sound, and later tracks like "All The Way From Memphis ", "Violence", "Marionette", "Hymn For The Dudes" and I think you'll find them much more to your liking.

Apart from the others you mention I think "Marionette" is a really good song.

As the story goes.. They were searching for a name for their band There was book and one of the main character's name was Mott. . One chapter was titled "Mott The Hoople". They just just liked the sound of that. BTW, “hoople” is English slang that dates back to 1928 and means a fool or stupid person.

Real Mott the Hoople fans love their more heavier rock albums, later they became Glamrocker, The Clash were big fans of early Mott the Hoople.

Bowie also produced the 'All the young dudes' album as well as writing the title track and cameoed with sax on a few of the songs. They also covered Lou Reed on this with 'Sweet Jane'. Another good song from this album is 'Ready for love'.

This is considered one of the greatest rock songs of all time loved by rockstars themselves, you have to watch it live to understand.

Spoken singing is known as “sprechgesang” (German) or “Parlando” (Italian). Carry the news!

Written for them by David Bowie. A very, very English band not always immediately understandable to us in the States. Not just because of the accent but a lot of the references, as well. Like the early Who before they recorded the album "Tommy."

Hoopla was part of the Glam Rock scene from the UK in the early 70s. It was more image than musicianship.

This was originally supposed to go on Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars. The dudes were carrying the same news as the newscaster was carrying in the song "Five Years". The news is that the Earth had only five years left to live. This is an apocalyptical tune. Bowie offered up Suffragette City and they declined. But from 1972-1975? Ian Hunter had the formula of hitmaking down pat.
