On Neil Young's Decade compilation album Neil writes comments on most of the songs. His comments on "Heart Of Gold" were funny. "This song put me firmly in the middle of the road,. I soon headed for a ditch, it's a rougher ride there but you meet more interesting people " Neil is an honest songwriter, and an amazing human being.

Neil Young released Heart of Gold in 1972 and it immediately grabbed my sole. In those days I was 15 while today I'm 67. In between those years, I ventured on my own search traveling/working/living from Africa, to Asia, to Europe, to the Middle East, to North America and back again. I'm still confident my Heart of Gold is out there ... we just haven't crossed paths yet.

I remember when this came out. Loved that it was about someone doing some serious introspection. And questing why he does some of the things he does. When he dies and what he camn do to change sone of that.

I remember this seeming like something really new and different back then. Something new in rock music. We'd had The Beatles (both the moptop suits and the psychedelic Sgt. Pepper jackets), swashbuckling pirates like Hendrix, big loud powerful bands like The Who and Zeppelin and Sabbath. Here was a guy with just jeans, a flannel shirt, long hair, an acoustic guitar and a stool, and he was the coolest guy I'd ever seen! It was a moment...

Neil is a very talented musician, singer & songwriter. He was with the groups Buffalo Springfield & Crosby, Stills & Nash in the later 60's. Also had his own group with Crazy Horse for a few years. Neil went solo & has had so many great songs over the years. The albums "After The Gold Rush" & "Harvest" from the 70's are considered 2 of his best.

Neil is primarily a solo performer and even in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a solo artist. He has used other backup groups over the years. Crazy Horse is the main one and they are kind of his primary rock backup group. The Stray Gators were more of a country ensemble that backed him up at times. Lately, he has also used Lucas Nelson & The Promise of the Real as a backup band. Neil is nothing if not eclectic.

"Heart of Gold" was a number one hit single for Neil Young in 1972. It was all over the radio back then. Linda Rondstadt sings the backing vocals on the studio recording. "Sugar Mountain" was the b-side. Classics both. "Helpless", "Old Man", "After the Gold Rush", "Don't Let it Bring You Down", "Tell Me Why", "Only Love Can Break Your Heart" -- classics all. But you're missing half the picture he paints without the rockers -- "Cinnamon Girl", "Cowgirl In the Sand", "Down By The River", "Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere", "Southern Man", "Hey Hey, My My (Into The Black)", "Rockin' In The Free World" -- a lot of fire there. And for something different, check out "Cortez The Killer" from disk two of Neil Young's live album "Weld" released in 1991.
