My first Neil Young concert; my Mom took me to when I was 8 and I was hooked... one of my top favorite musicians and songwriters... Today I am 42 and recently went to a Neil Young show in LA and I will never tire of his banter and humor between songs; just like he was here fumbling with his harmonicas; he did the same and had a glass of water he was dipping them into and even went as far as throwing one across the stage because it didn't sound right. I lost count of how many times I have seen him perform but he is like none other. A national treasure and gentleman

Old Man, yes!!! It’s the first popular (not church) song I ever memorized…sang it hundreds of times by myself, it healed me. This was over 50 years ago, around the time of this concert. And I never understood it until someone kindly explained that in its two stanzas he sings the voices of _two_ people, first himself, then the old man. Then all of it snaps into place. I simply didn’t expand my imagination enough! Neil’s talent is INCREDIBLE. He has two very different versions of the _same_ song, another gorgeous ballad called “Cowgirl in the Sand.” I’d always loved the tender folk version. But he has a rock and toll version that is STUNNING! He’s one of the greatest guitarists ever, I had no idea that he played like Clapton, etc. You will never run out of great songs by Neil, his talent goes forever. Take care 😘

I’ve been a fan of Neil Young since I was a young teen in the early 70’s, have always been a huge fan. In 2009 I took my family to Disney World in Orlando, and when returning to Kingston Ontario our home town I heard on the radio that Neil was playing at our local arena, instead of going home first I went straight to the arena and got tickets for the show. Neil’s dad was living here in Kingston when he passed, Neil was here to bury his dad a few months before and said he was coming back for a show (I learned this at the show) he dedicated Heart of Gold to him that night, it was a great concert!

As you say great intermate performance. He is Canadian, but performed in the USA with people like Crosby, Stills & Nash. I believe this as in the UK at the BBC. Very intermate concert setting. Lots of singer songwriters performed at these small concerts. The likes of James Taylor etc All in the early part of their careers.

Very down to earth person. I remember years ago reading an article in a music publication where the writer went to Neils property for an interview. Neil said sure but I'm working on the sound for an outdoor concert so you'll have to follow me. They walked down to a small lake and got into a row boat and rowed out about 30 yards into the lake. A man on shore opened the doors to a barn on the right and then the side of what looked like an old corn crib on the left. There were stacks of speakers in both buildings facing the lake. The assistant then played a recording of one of Neils songs. After the song the assistant shouted, what do you think. Neil replied, NEEDS MORE BARN. No computer, just put himself in the audiences place to see if the levels sounded right.

He also had a very angry side to some of his songs. He wrote "Ohio" after four student protesters at Kent State University in Ohio were shot and killed by National Guardsmen. Nearly 20 years later he wrote "Keep on Rockin' in the Free World" protesting the state of things in American society prior to the first Gulf War, Desert Storm.

My favorite Neil Young story... Neil Young was always experimenting with music styles to varying degrees of success. He wanted to do an album with a heavy electronic music theme, but his record label didn't think it would sell. They wanted him to do another rock and roll album, and that's exactly what they told him. So he did, but being a rebel and not liking being told what to do artistically he did the unexpected. He recorded what was essentially a rock-a-billy album called Everybody's Rockin'. The big cut off the album was "Wonderin' " with the Shocking Pinks and even included "doo-wah" backup singers. While his record label was furious, they produced the album anyway because he had, after all, done what they asked. I recommend checking out the video for "Wonderin'." I think you'll get a kick out of it, and get the joke.

😊 Thank you, I had never seen this version of Heart Of Gold before! Normally I don't like when a musician strip down a full band song to a singer-songwriter guitar (and harmonica) only; but in the case of Neil Young it works just fine. Maybe because he composes his songs on acoustic guitar or piano only, then adding drums and bass and keyboards. I found Neil in the '70s with "Live Rust" and was astonished by his both sides; the rockin' electric guitar guy soloing fantasticly and then the singer/songwriter guy like in "I am a child". His fellow canadian Randy Bachman (a vivid storyteller) has great stories on YT that includes some Neil Young references and Neil features in the song "Prairie town" and play on both versions. Graham Nash was "a bit" reluctant to Neil though, judging from Grahams biography😄

Back in the day there were “Coffee Houses” everywhere, where aspiring musicians (especially those who played acoustic guitars like Neil is playing now). It could have from 10 to 100 people listening to people to decide to take the stage and play guitar and sing. I played this song at a coffee house in my hometown when I was a mid-teenager. It was the beginning of my playing in public. That is until I saw what could be in store for me as a working musician: traveling all the time, hotel, to hotel. Wasn’t my life style. I still play, but just for fun.
