Thanks for watching our first time reaction to Pantera. We ended up checking out Cemetery Gates based on the recent poll, and it did not disappoint. Lex was basically in a trance this entire song. What other songs should we check out from Pantera?

This was my brother's favorite Pantera song. We used to listen to this one together. I lost him to cancer a few years ago as fate would have it. It's a grief song, that reminds me of him every time I hear it, that expresses my own grief at losing him.

That’s something that happens in the rap world. In metal, musicians die from overdoses or horrific accidents but not from getting shot. And there’s a conspiracy that phill (the singer) wanted dimebag and his brother (drummer) dead. The shooter tried to go for the drummer to but wasn’t able to get him.

I have been a metalhead for over 25 years and I also get so absorbed by the music, the talent, the feeling I also struggle to follow the lyrics too. Many people 'hear' metal and think it's all noise... if you actually 'listen' to the music it is far deeper in all aspects to many other genres you can appreciate it in so many ways. To me it feels like they are talking about the need to allow yourself to grieve so that you can move on. The lyric's about not crying when she died and then the need to reverse their life and not live in the past, passing the cemetery gates feels like a metaphor for finally moving on with life.

The story behind the song is pretty funny too. It went something like the band received a letter from a listeners Dad who was angry at the band for the music they make. In the letter, he said "I wish I could just get 5 minutes alone with you", so they made the song! There's a video somewhere that might explain it better

@@flamezor123 the way Phil Anselmo tells it. There was this kid at a concert being a total ass heckling the band etc so the crowd kicked his ass. Because he’s black he tried to say it was racially motivated hence the line “you use complexion of my skin for a counter racist tool” the letter was from the boys father saying forget the law suit I just want 5 minutes alone with Phil Anselmo. The bands manager replied “no, you really don’t”

Though he also stated, that he had a friend who had died in New Orleans and this incident had a heavy impact on a group of his friends.

My take on the song is that passing the cemetery gates is a metaphor for leaving his grief behind. When his wife died and she lay to rest he continued to live at her side stuck in a state of grief or living in the past.

I saw them in the early '90's on Vulgar Display Tour & it was INSANITY! Literally the roughest mosh pit I'd ever been in. Phil had that circle shaved in the back of his head with the long pony tail & he pulled some guy up on stage who had the same haircut. They were both moshing around & you could tell dude knew the song so Phil just handed him the mic & he starts singing the rest of the song.... he 'looked' AND 'sounded' JUST LIKE PHIL. At the end Phil grabbed another Mike & they 'dueted" it out. WhATT?!! In the pit random people kept flying literally 15-20 feet in the air. I moved toward the front & slammed into this 7 foot UNIT of a skin head! He looked at me & in a growling voice goes, "You wanna go UP?" He clasped his hands together & goes, "Come on!" I put my foot in & dude launched me higher than I've ever been tossed in my life!! It wasn't until I came back down on that crowd that I remembered I wore cowboy boots to the concert... I still feel bad for whoever I caught with those boots. 👢 👢 Man that had to hurt. What a great concert!!

The “You took my youth” line, usually is in connection with sexual abuse. And the line “crucified for no sins” sounds like being punished for not doing anything wrong. The rest of the lyrics seem to fall in place with this idea “I couldn’t cry the pride within my soul”. “I should’ve cried to spare myself some pain” “You left me incomplete” IMO

I went to high school with the lead singer, Phil Anselmo. Back then he was in a band named Razor White (1983-86). We experienced the suicide of multiple friends in 1985. I never spoke to Phil personally about the close friends we lost, I was closer to the drummer and bass guitarist. 5 close friends for me in that year. I know Phil was very close to 2 of them. After hearing it for the first time, to me it always represented that year for us as a group of friends. Phil was and is an amazing singer, his control and octave range reminds me of Rob Halford of Judas Priest. Great reaction!!!

The lyrics are important that's how the emotions and the feelings are through the music. It tells a story and and the music reflects the emotions.

"I will unlock my door and pass the cemetery gates" is a reference to suicide, unlocking your own door to eternity as your body passes through the cemetery gates on it's way to the final resting place. He is suicidal after the loss of a loved one that he just can't get past.

Maybe he's a cemetery care taker and lives on site. So he had to unlock his door and pass the gates to go back in .. .

Nope, in the south it's a custom to lock your doors when passing the cemetery to keep "bad luck/spirits" out and he's saying he'll unlock his doors and let them in, maybe in a literal sense but more probably talking about letting in the sadness and grief he's been shutting out

Watching people being turned on to good music that means something to me is awesome ….. and Pantera is good music all the way . They were 4 unique people that made 1 band that rocked in a pure way …. I saw them live 4 or 5 times but never to see them …. In Southern California they played with white zombie ,dag nasty , white caps and a larger band …..shows were $8-$15 hearing this song takes me back ….

The Moscow 1991 performance of their song “Domination” is legendary. Same concert as Metallica 1991 Moscow. Lex will love it the most! Guaranteed ! lol Pantera, without question, have the most consistently violent mosh pits I’ve ever been in. I’m a bit of a mosh pit connoisseur, for lack of a better way to put it. i’ve never seen a mosh pit I didn’t like. I’ve been to something like 16 or 17 Pantera concerts. Pantera music is straight fire energy. There is plenty of music in this rabbit hole to love!

It wasnt his wife that passes away, he wrote that part in different perspective, if i remember phil said he didnt want it to be to personal cuz it could be "cheesy". Its about 2 of his friends that committed suicide within 2 weeks of eachother. The song is about him dealing with the loss and flirting with the thought of suicide , I will unlock my door And pass the Cemetery Gates Thats what unlock my door and pass the cemetery gates means.
