I don't think enough folks appreciate how groundbreaking his music was. He was always outside the norm, leading the way. In my opinion, he is genius on the level of any member of the Beatles. His album "Graceland" was brilliant in its innovation and artistry.

Yes! Graceland is a perfect album, beginning to end. Remember it very well from when it came out, still have it on vinyl, is a great memory of listening to it with my dad so many times. There's just so much lyrical and rhythmic genius dumped into that album. And who can forget Paul Simon and Chevy Chase acting like fools in the video for You Can Call Me Al 🤣

This song is bloody genius. Telling his story of how music hit him when he was young. He is up there with Lennon and McCartney in songwriting terms. This song makes this oldish woman feel like dancing 💃🏾 lucky to have seen him live, on the Graceland tour and a couple of years ago in Manchester England. A very hot day in July and this song hit home like never before. The man is a certified genius.

Simon & Garfunkel was a folk duo from the 60s. By the time they split up, folk was near-death. Paul didn't give up on folk, or music from around the world, but he figured out a new sound for the current rock era. Just another aspect of his genius.

A fair amount of the musicians in this video were the band Paul brought to Central Park a couple years later for he and Art Garfunkel's famous reunion concert there (estimates say 500,000 or so were there to see it). I had forgotten that Tony Levin was the bassist on this...best known for being in the 1980's version of King Crimson and most of their lineups since, until Robert Fripp pulled the curtain down a little over a year ago. He's also been Peter Gabriel's bassist forever.

This is from Paul Simon's movie (and album) "One Trick Pony." (Which is a much underrated song.) He plays the songwriter and leader of the band playing with him in this video, so the song is pretty relevant to the story of the movie. Personally I love the movie and the whole album, which is about the life of a musician - not a great or successful musician necessarily, but someone who quietly but stubbornly struggles to keep living that life.

From wikipedia: Drummer Steve Gadd. Gadd devised the distinctive drum part by using two pairs of drumsticks - one in each hand - in order to give the impression of two drummers playing together, as he has demonstrated in drum clinics. Gadd plays a New York City style Cuban Mozambique drum groove. Simon was inspired, the result was GENIUS.
