It's not a new observation, but Steve Gadd's drumming is just next level brilliant - and we hear virtually no snare drum! One of Paul Simon's most undervalued songs, and about as much fun as he ever got. The syncopated rhythm is just so infectious.
@Randsurfer

HE is playing that rhythm with double drum sticks, 2 in each hand. There is a youtube video where he explains it.

The fact that he came up with it on his first take just is staggering to me - he's also the guy that did 50 Ways. Gadd is God.

Classic Paul Simon a great request many more to come. Its the great Steve Gadd on drums, Tony Levin on bass, Eric Gale on electric guitar, Hugh McCraken on acoustic guitar and horns arranged by the great Dave Grusin. Great DAN selection Stephen and a gyrating/grooving reaction from N & L. Solid Gold.

Yeah Steve Gadd, he is great, his drum work on this funny, so lovely song of Paul Simon, I loved it, at is so full of joy and happiness. BTW, I watched Steve Gadd live 2 times, 1 was in 1979 in Mannheim in Germany as drummer of the late Chick Corea. He was also with Steely Dan and Eric Clapton and many more. Paul Simon was the master of all songs of Simon and Garfunkel and I loved all his solo albums too !!

I saw Simon & Garfunkel in Stockholm 1982, they played this - Steve Gadd had two drumsticks in each hand to get that special sound. Amazing, What a day that was.

Paul got into African and Caribbean and Latin beats and note progressions around this time, thus the less folk sound to this tune.

Thanks, Stephen! An unusually fun song from Paul Simon. To answer your question, Nick, yes he was married to Carrie Fisher around this time. Then it all came suddenly crashing down. His next album, Hearts and Bones, was a very sad album in comparison, and sold poorly. But here he was much happier.

7 Psalms is amazing for 2 reasons- it invokes memories of my Roman Catholic childhood and Gregorian chants almost and I like Edie Brickell his wife - also it is almost like 1 song with different pieces to it- it is not commercial at all but I can't believe he can still sing and play at 81 or 82..

Lionel Richie was 3-4 years later btw. Paul Simon was born in New York City. He played in England in the early 1960’s and wrote a lot of his early Simon and Garfunkel tunes there. He and Carrie Fisher weren’t married long.

My favorite Paul Simon song. Never seen anyone react this until a couple days ago and now another one! Weird. Go down the rabbit hole. If this song doesn’t make you move, there’s something wrong with you. If you like Lionel Richie, you need to check out his duet with Rob Zombie of The Commodore’s song Brick House. Living in Phoenix and being exposed to a lot of Mexican music, it always surprised me how prominent the tuba is.

This was 3 or 4 years before Lionel's "All Night Long". And Simon & Garfunkel were both from New York City. Check out their early albums - lots of songs about the city. Simon did go to England for a while during a breakup period, when they hadn't really made it yet, but tried to be a success over there. Came home to the US and the rest is history.

Great song, perceptive reaction. "Very playful, but very well put together" - so true! That's funny, it does remind one of All night long. But Paul's lyrics are always a few steps above almost anyone else. This song is so personal with those memory flashes pulling together his feelings about his own origins as a musician and his romantic feelings about meeting this special woman.
