I believe this song is about the anxiety of one day losing the one you love. He hears the sirens in the distance and wonders when his time will come, and he'll wait for her on the "other side".

It’s about death my man. The overhanging ever present thought of parting with a loved one

'Sirens' was released in 2013, and 'Black' in 1991. I hear them as bookends to how we experience love. As a young man, Vedder is devastated by the loss of his love, not having life's experience to know that there may be future love equal to, or deeper than, the first. Thirty years later, a mature Vedder is speaking of the depth of his present love. The sirens in the night remind him nothing lasts forever, "by which we live our lives, with death over our shoulders". This is just my take, yours is equally true. That's the cool thing about music, we all experience it in our own unique ways. Beautiful song and enjoyed your take on it.

It's so interesting how different someone's interpretation of the same words can be from someone else's! Maybe it's because you were interpreting individual lines as you heard them rather than listening to the whole song and then interpreting it? Or because I was interpreting it in the context of the rest of the album or in the context of the rest of the lyrics he's written? Maybe we just associate sirens with different situations? Very interesting to hear you immediately associate sirens with war, whereas I (and lots of others, it seems) hear sirens and think ambulance.
