This song - is on every device that I own. Phone, tablet, old mp3s....cassette tape...LOL. This song is just one of those songs that starts out really strong, but still manages to build, and build through to the end. BTW - it sounds INCREDIBLE hearing this thru car speakers....LOUD. p.s. back in the 80's THIS was considered pop....standards were high then.

This is one of those black guilty pleasures in the 80s that was always the white UK artists that will come through with a banger... White UK artist identify with American blacks more than white American... The music video oh this is even more crazy... Genesis is the group that Phil Collins became the lead singer of... He was the drummer at first... This song though was one of those songs that both black and white kids like even though back then we were separated by music white kids were not listening to hip-hop the way they are now... They were really white... As f***... artists like Peter Gabriel... George Michael... Phil Collins... Steve Winwood... Simply Red... From the UK bridge that gap between black and white in the mid-80s... If you want to delve into Blue Eyed Soul from the UK holla at me I give you some names..... I don't want diminish our appreciation for this song... But Sledgehammer simply means... Let me come over and beat that p**** up

Genesis is the same group that Phil Collins came from. Phil was the drummer and became the lead singer after Peter left. I'm surprised you didn't use the video version. There is a music video for this song.

THis was the last song written and recording of this album, but was his biggest single worldwide and the reason why the public buying the ''So'' album so much, remain his best-selling. This song also was know for her revolutionnary music video, using Stop Motion to create the video and a creative video who it's very abstract and very excellent. The video was a life changing in music industry and a before and after the video, all wanted to make a video like ''Sledgehammer. The industry was never be same after the video of ''Sledgehammer'' and a influencal video, 35 years after his released.

Back during that era in the 80s, either you were Pop, Jazz, Rap, Country, Rock or R&B. So this would have been classified in the "Pop" genre as I remember.

That "flute" you hear at the beginning of the track is called a Shakuhachi (pronounced shock-oo-haa-chee). It was a preset built-in on an EMU Emulator II synth keyboard that Peter used on this album. It's the same keyboard you'll see Ferris Bueller use in the movie Ferris Bueller's Day Off.

Judging from his reaction to the song itself, the video would've been overwhelming. I've seen a few reactors get distracted and so by the end of the video you're not even sure if they appreciated the music on its own or what.

Peter Gabriel was a spiritual song writer. Sledgehammer is about the Law of Attraction and the sledgehammer is the breaking up of old habits and creating your own life. That’s what the sperm is about, creation. You can see when the video ends he’s literally becoming the fabric of the universe. Listen to the words and look up the law of attraction. He’s basically saying you can have whatever you want if you allow yourself. He is speaking as the universe to himself. His song “in your eyes” is about meditation...he’s talking to himself again in that one. You gotta watch the video for sledgehammer and in your eyes to really get what he is saying

Dont worry so much about classifying and assigning a genre to everything. It takes away from the full enjoyment of the song. When you listen for the first time just ask yourself "is it good?" Music is either good or not, genre really doesn't matter as many artists, such as Prince, don't just stick to one thing. The best music comes when they experiment and create new and different instead of same old same old!

Valentine's Day is on February 14th. I would say that the musical genre of this song is a combination of pop, soul, funk and rock. It's one the greatest Music Videos of the 80's {won a record nine MTV Awards at the 1987 MTV Video Music Awards and, according to a report in 2011, it was MTV's most played music video of all time.}.. The reason why this "hit you" is because even though this is technically classified as "pop", it's obviously GOSPEL....the choir and call and response, the tambourine heaviness, the "swell" @ the end ...he took you to ⛪....lol If you want to hear another 80s song that does this same thing, listen to Neutron Dance by The Pointer Sisters...❤❤❤. They were raised in their father's church, so nobody did GOSPEL pop better than they did!!!
