Solsbury hill is an ancient field enclosure on the top of a flat topped hill with bank and ditch to contain cattle. It is 'alone in the world' just on the outskirts of Bath, and open to the public as a National Trust owned parcel of land.

You beat me to it. I have the Bluray of that show, and it is on at least half of my youtube playlists. Simply magical and I am so grateful it is well captured. But think of the vibe the people there were feeling. I'm totally jealous.

The interesting sound comes partially from the song being in 7/4 time, with the verse lines starting on the 5th beat and ending on the first beat of the next measure.

It is not a goodbye song, it is a spiritual awakening song, he is saying how he got the awakening on top of Solsbury hill, that he was in a rut and had to be more connected to his inner self, how his friends would call him a nut, and the reference of turning water into wine, but he went with it anyway and made his life better, got out of the music machinery (with Genesis) and moved onto the music he wanted to create. Look up his career it is quite amazing, started his own studio and helping to bring music from different cultures and countries to everyone

Solsbury Hill is a real hill in England, and if you check on a map you will see that the closest city is Bath, so when he sings " I can see the city lights", he means Bath. Just a little bit of trivia. 😄

@@peterj.h.2697 It was later than the 1980s - I recall them as being early to mid 1990s. The claimed noise and disruption to the site were overstated, and in practice you cannot see or hear the traffic on the A46 heading north to the motorway from the hill top - the distance to the new A46 being less than that to the old (urban) route by only 100m or so at the closest, and with noise baffles and a cutting keeping the traffic out of sight and earshot. The bypass on the far side of the river, heading east is slightly more visible, but is not particularly close nor intrusive.

Still my favourite Peter Gabriel song. I have seen him in concert a number of times and I love his unique influence on music, culture and even on world politics. However, I have never heard a live version of "Solsbury Hill" that satisfies me. One must admit that this song depends hugely upon the album version's production and sound. Until you hear the original album version, and listen to the entire fade-out for its weirdness, you cannot understand why this is such a legendary song. Only the original will do.

Y'oussou N'Dour featured vocals are perfect on the original studio version. And the live version loses the focus on the delicate percussion. The live version is great, but it's not the version that everyone fell in love with. It seems to be the one all the reactors get handed and they're really missing out on a gem.

Solsbury Hill is off of an idillic little Village called Box in Bath, Uk. Peter still has a recording studio there where some super famous people have and still do record ( from Van Morrrison, Amy Winehouse, Tom Jones, Kanye West and Jay Z to name a few). I was so lucky to live in Bath for 4 years and visited Box a lot. The view from Solsbury Hill is beautiful. I loved this song way before I ever moved there but now it brings back a flood of memories and that “warn fuzzy” feeling such an amazing song can bring!

Box is around 4-5 miles to the east. Swainswick is the nearest village, with Bailbrook and Northend being adjacent on the south and east. For larger village centres there as Batheaston and Lambridge, both along the London road heading in toward Bath city centre. I don't think you could even see little Solsbury Hill from Box, as it is behind another ridge and up a river valley some way.

MrLBoyd, you're 100% right. The story I've always heard was that Peter left Genesis due to the execs wanting to move away from the progressive rock style the band was known for and go totally mainstream. While Peter kept his values and stayed a progressive artist Genesis would in fact go mainstream with drummer Phil Collins becoming the new vocalist. The happy part of the story is not only did Phil and Peter both become major successes but Mike Rutherford started the band Mike and the Mechanics and although short-lived the band has it's own place in musical history proving Mike just as skilled as Peter and Phil.

After he left Genesis and started his solo career he also started the WOMAD lable. A label that features world music artists, also in the 80's he startet the"witness"program where he sent free of cost single use cameras to people to document injustice ! Mind, that was pre cell phone! All that cost him so much money that he got broke and had to do a Genesis reunion tour. The reason why he's so on the beat, like Collins, he's a former drummer!

Peter Gabriel was always a progressive artist adding new and inventive sounds into his music. I love the music you check out on the channel but sometimes I think the version You watch or hear isn't the best representation of how the artist originally meant the song to be heard or received. I do appreciate the point of view you offer but sometimes I think you should hear certain songs closer to their original release time periods. Most of the classic rock era artists that have been performing the last decade have changed the sound of some of their music for various reasons, so I believe there is a different type of appreciation to the original, or close to, offering. love the channel just a thought.

My personal favorite Peter Gabriel live performance is his rendition of "Biko" as the final number of his set at the 1986 Amnesty International concert at Giant's Stadium. The perfect song performed in the perfect setting for its message. Both the audience at Giant's Stadium and those watching worldwide via MTV were stunned. Yes, there are better live audio performances of "Biko" since that recorded. But the 1986 Amnesty International performance is the one which truly cemented Peter Gabriel as a solo artist worldwide.

The song is about Peter leaving the band Genesis, which he fronted previously, and moving forward without the security of the band Genesis to back him up, to start his solo career. "walking out of the machinery" is him leaving the "machine' of genesis, with all the stage production and tour staff, and all the "red carpet" treatment that came with being a part of Genesis, and having that sort of clout and fame.

Some of the best lyrics I've ever heard IMO, relative to the subject matter. It's rare that you can pull up lyrics to a pop song and read them and be totslly moved by them alone. The language is just so spot on. I prefer the studio version as it's a little slower and has a more stern power to it, like he's finally releasing something from himself. And yes this has been on like a thousand soundtracks. Usually "feel-good" films.

Peter Gabriel was the founder and original creative force of Genesis, before Phil Collins took his place. Two major events inspired MOST of Peter's post-Genesis and pre-Bloodwork music: Leaving Genesis as it was skyrocketing to fame to go solo, and his very long, bitter and painful divorce from his first wife. Those two things inspired his first 4 best selling albums.

The song was about his choice to leave Genesis and pursue a solo career. The trepidation that comes with such a monumental decision.

This is great. But I do like the studio version better, by far. He sounds hoarse here and not as strong.

I like the original studio cut. Saying goodbye to the band he just left. Off to work solo. A good choice? thoughts differ. I love his works with Genesis. I did not like his "Pop" period. It did not feel to me as honest as his more cutting edge works. It is somewhat ironic that his most popular MTV hits are my least favorites. Shock the Monkey. and SledgeHammer, can not hold a candle to his dramatic and experimental pieces. listen to the likes of Wallflower. Here Comes the Flood. San Jacinto...Signal to Noise...Beautiful and moving works.

@Commander Phillip Yoder I just withdrew my profits a week ago, it was so shocking when I withdrew $6,450 from his platform knowing I invested $1,240. I wish I could reinvest but, too much bills 😩

Yes, Richard Wayne is the best. He is the only one I can leave my investment with and think less about it, he is my money maker. I just received $13,000 of my investment last month. I am very happy because he is leading me to financial freedom
