Glad you appreciate Richard's contribution to PF sound! Highly underrated yet so much a part of it! Without David and Richard, Pink Floyd would not be! Seen them live many times over 50+ years and there is no band that compares! Truly insane talent they all had, especially coming from 60s with essentially a totally new genre all their own!

@@retroreactions.... For a very sort of modern sounding Pink Floyd check out his solo album "Broken China". I wish he could've been around longer bcuz he was honestly the glue that held the Floyd together! His other solo album from '78, Wet Dream is a very laid back and cool listen. Some of it has some feel of WYWH type stuff. Love them both. In the 80s before he rejoined Floyd he did some almost techno kind of stuff called Zee. It's very of its time and nothing like Floyd, but since you seem to like synths alot I figure I'd mention it. 👌 👌 Identity it's called. A little cheesy compared to today's standards, but it's worth peeking at it, a little.

@@retroreactions.... The Who pioneered the "Rock Opera" with their epic story in the two LP "Tommy". The Pinball Wizard! That's one of those things that you really have to listen to in it's entirety. Many of the instrumental passages are definitely in the prog vain for sure. Briefly it's the musical story of a young boy who has a traumatic experience as a little boy and becomes deaf and blind. In his 20s he finds that he has a knack for playing pinball. He beats the world champion and becomes this cultural/religious leader (after his brain switches his senses back on after a different trauma, so to speak). Tommy is one of the most important albums of the past 60 years easily! A few years later The Who did another one called "Quadrophenia". Another great album that borders on prog for sure, but The Who were also pioneers of hard rock! That's really what they're most known for. Pete Townsend was the Roger Waters of The Who writing most of the words and music.

The Live At Pompeii is a full concert and a whole video. They did this for the audience of all the ghosts of Pompei who were buried by an eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD (yeah, almost 2000 years ago). That "mud" was actually lava bubbling up.

It's not just "Echoes", this whole pseudo-concert to the ghosts of the Vesuvius victims was absolutely brilliant! The Pompeii rendition of "A Saucerful of Secrets" always takes my breath away. It's Pink Floyd going beyond Pink Floyd, so as to say! The full documentary (when DVDs appeared, it was my first one!) also has some precious moments, like takes from the recording of "The Dark Side of the Moon" (including a guitar riff that in the end didn't make its way into "Brain Damage" and you wish it had).

Hi. Nice to see you appreciating the sound track to my youth in the UK, there were some truly amazing bands around in those days, all worth checking out. As has been mentioned earlier this video is part of a movie made for cinematic release by the French film director Adrian Maben who was a fan of the band. It was his idea to film the band in the ancient Roman Amphitheatre in Pompeii, (which was destroyed by a volcanic eruption in 79 AD), there are other songs available on KZbin from this movie and it was his idea to split the song into two parts which "book end" the movie, whereas in a live performance it would be played straight through without any split. Anyway he managed to get permission to film for 6 days during which the site would be closed to any tourists, however they lost 2 of those days because there was a cut in the electrical power supply meaning he couldn't get all the footage he required. This is the reason for the footage of the band playing in a studio in France which is included in Part 2. Another live performance you might be interested in was from 1970 on a US tour, the band set up their gear in the Fillmore West Auditorium in San Francisco, again with no audience, and which was filmed by a local TV station. David doesn't look entirely at ease because at this time he was just playing Syd Barrett's parts rather than creating his own. I've included a link to "Astronomy Domine" which pre dates "Echoes" but remained a part of their stage show until the end. I love Nicks drumming in this track, as I do in the video you reacted to here. He really was seriously underrated as a drummer, but there you go. kzbin.info/www/bejne/a6bNaXx_r8elrJo

Thanks for all the info Rich. Love hearing Pompeii concert facts. I also heard they had to run a power cord all the way from the town center or something, and that a few kids snuck in and were allowed to stay! I think I saw a clip from that San Francisco session, I think it was part of a 1994 PF documentary I watched last night.

The last part of this song always reminds me of David and Richard walking down the street and where it comes to a Y as they have a conversation kind of saying see you later until next time and they continue the conversation as they get farther apart until they can't see one another anymore. That's what it always seemed like to me with David and Richard having a goodbye conversation until I see you next time! A brilliant way to end a brilliant piece of music that I really believe is up there with Mozart's Requiem, Beethoven's 9th Symphony and it'll be recognized as such a thousand years from now!! Can't remember the exact year I think it was 2006 when they played this live for the last time live in Gdansk Poland! They really did it justice there too it's one of the best sounding live recordings I've ever heard of the song!! You should at least watch and listen to it on your own it really is a great version of this song and sadly the last because David said he would never play it again without Richard! One last comment, you should listen to the song "A Boat Lies Waiting", that was written by David as a tribute to Richard Wright not too long after he passed! It's a beautiful almost requiem as a tribute from David to Richard!!

This was a full length movie that featured other songs from the album 'Meddle' as well as brief interviews with the band and some in studio segments of them laying down tracks for some upcoming album they were working on that was soon to be released called "Dark Side of the Moon". For many of us boomers this movie was the way most of us were exposed to live Pink Floyd since they never appeared on American television throughout the seventies while at the height of their popularity. The movie was shown at midnight in movie houses all across America every weekend for years and years. When VHS became mainstream in the '80s I believe this was the first film I ever purchased. And then of course the compact disc when disc players came out, and then eventually the digital version. It's been a long history indeed with this band.

I’ve watched a lot of Pink Floyd reactions before. Being a big Floyd fan I see a lot people reacting inappropriately to the point of embarrassment. Also their comments tend to be over the top like they’re experiencing accidental nipple expose from Taylor Swift in the nose bleed section at one of her concerts. I’m not sure what your name is but I must congratulate you on your precise examinations on both the audio and visual summarising of live Echoes. Your comparisons to the studio and the Pompeii versions were simple and well researched. I could tell that you’re an actual fan. I didn’t feel embarrassed watching you watch the clip unlike the other reaction folk making me squirm in my seat and reach for the off button. Your calm demeanour makes the experience all that better allowing viewers to enjoy the video without the host dominating with unnecessary comments and fake tears. Well done mate! Would be nice, but I have to be careful on KZbin to make this content transformative, which includes me giving commentary before, during and after, and visually making myself the greater percentage of what is seen...Thanks for watching and commenting Kent!

Dave and Rick's voices blend so perfectly that it's easy to confuse their harmonizing with times that it's just Gilmour double-tracking himself, which was done quite often as well. I have one minor criticism of the LaP version of Echoes, and I suspect it's more of a mixing thing than a performance flaw; Nick's cymbals are so forward and "bright" that I really have to train my ear to listen past them. It might just be a "me" problem, because I've yet to hear anyone else ever mention it. *shrug*
@retroreactions....
@retroreactions.... 2 жыл бұрын
Didn't notice that...but I agree about their voices, like I couldn't tell who was singing which line, I assume David sings the lower part, just because that's usually how it goes but let me know...

@@retroreactions.... Dammit, someone validate my criticism! lol No, that's great, glad it doesn't stab your brain like mine. Regarding harmony, you are right on the money, but they did occasionally switch roles. On the Gdansk performance I believe that was the case, but as perfect proof of the premise, I actually can't say with certainty.

For more visual insight into their sonic creativity (plus another musical masterpiece), check out another cut from Live in Pompeii 1971, A Saucerful of Secrets: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mXbJhGxue51sftE Be sure to see this full version and not just the "Celestial Voices" cut, which is beautiful but incomplete.

If you want to get a handle on David Gilmore's quest for TONE, you should check out the intro and outro of their song 'SORROW' from the Live concert in 1994: "Pulse". Although the whole song is a BANGER from start to finish with an epic solo, the intro sound will just blow your mind!!! See it here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gJWzhZiZaqZ3fKc

I worked so hard and poured my heart into my other channel, and it took 10 months to get to around 408 subs there, and this one is gonna hit 408 subs by tomorrow after just over 3 weeks! I'm also not used to getting so many comments, so I'm on cloud 9 meeting and chatting with all you great people. This is what I always wanted from KZbin...Yes, copyright is a tricky thing here...

This isn't the best edit, someone put both parts seamlessly, its on youtube as well. Waters never performed the song solo after the splitup. Gilmore wont play it without rick wright. He actually died before the Gdansk version was released.

in case someone doesn't know Pompeii and Herculaneum were destroyed by the eruption of the nearby Vesuve volcano in 79AD, so this explains the gasses coming out of the ground en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eruption_of_Mount_Vesuvius_in_79_AD. Pompeii ( maybe the amphitheatre too ) had to be excavated
