At 10:48 I think most do look back on their childhood with nostalgia and remember what they liked as a child. The trends of times including clothes/hair styles, music, movies, television, video games, technology. As adults a lot of people rebuy items they had as a kid or wanted to buy as a kid.

When I was young, I never listened to "rock" bands because I thought drugs were necessary to appreciate them. Now, age seems to have dulled my thoughts enough to appreciate them. Thanks . This song would have been wasted in my youth, but great in my advancing age

@DianeJennings - you should definitely look into one of the songs from an early album, Ummagumma! The song is called “Several Species of Small Furry Animals Gathered Together in a Cave and Grooving With a Pict,” and it is one of their most entirely “out there” recordings. I absolutely love it.

I remember buying The Division Bell album on CD in 1996 after I got my first CD player. I have always enjoyed the song, but it gave a different message to me then vs today. Then, I saw it more as there are divisions amongst people, but hopefully in time those can be repaired. Today, I definitely see the nostalgia aspect of the song, but the message saying more that things will never get better with time, but one can still hope and try. The entire album is worth listening to, including Take It Back, Keep Talking, Wearing the inside Out, and Lost For Words.

Hi Diane and Chewie! Happy Wednesday to you both! I'm glad that you're becoming hip to Pink Floyd! My first exposure to the group was having to watch a film of theirs for my Film Appreciation class in Junior College called "The Wall." I'll say that it was very eclectic. This song you listened to and reacted to seems pretty cool. I always enjoy your insights and reactions to these types of videos. They're quite genuine, and you always look like you're having a good time with listening to them and bands like them. I appreciate you and your channel! David Gilmour has his own YT channel, and just recently released his latest track, and as he's been doing for over 50 years, he makes it worth listening to. Floyd is one of those groups that you can listen to a particular song, but there are two or three albums you need to listen to first song to last to really appreciate their musicality.

Even some of us with horrible childhoods have aspects of them we feel nostalgia for. In my case, where I grew up was absolutely fantastic for mid-teens and below. At home was awful, but in that time and place, most of my time was spent outside anyway, climbing trees and rocks, riding bikes in a 20-mile loop that included a good chunk going through the copious woods, a huge lake right across the street, and at a time before helicopter parents were a thing so we just did whatever occurred to us in the moment. And most of this was when the U.S. started finally hearing about Pink Floyd, and my older brothers were fans so I heard them, too. Yeah, I had Ummagumma on 8-track!

The first time I listened to this entire album I cried at the end. This is the final track of the last studio album from Pink Floyd. The bell throughout the song symbolized the end of the band to me. The fade out of the bell at the end of the track made me break down and cry knowing that this was it.

I love watching the Joy in your face as you discover this music. I think the music of Pink Floyd has drawn more and more varied emotional responses from me than any other band I’ve ever listened to. I was also fortunate enough to see them in concert when I was in my late teens, although that was after the split, during the Momentary Lapse of Reason tour. I was a little too young to have experienced them live with Roger Waters.

I would recommend The dark side of the moon album (don't listen to them as separate songs as it's more of an experience than every song saying something specific). The wall is more psychological (again, it's a concept album that should be listened to all the way or the movie watched all at once). A momentary lapse of reason is pretty good but not their best work. Learning to fly, On the Turning away, and Sorrow are the ones you really want to look at on that one. Other good songs in my humble opinion are Shine on you crazy diamond and A great day for freedom. P.S. Wish you were here is another.

Great reaction Diane! One of my favourite PF songs. As it was my mom's favourite, I find it hard to get through this one without tearing up since her passing in 2018. Very reflective song! I highly recommend checking the live version from the PULSE tour (you don't need to react to it - but you NEED to see/hear it!) The sound is deeper, fuller. Pink Floyd is truly a 'live' band - they excel at making their studio songs better when performing it before an audience! (might have something to do with the visuals too!) Cheers!

The song seems to me a kind of new understanding of things first explored in PF's song "Time." Roger Waters wrote the earlier one, and in his youth captured the kind of dismay felt by so many as they age. Whereas David Gilmour's "The Division Bell" seems more resigned, at peace, with the disappointment that realizing time passes can bring. Really appreciate your taking time to check out these PF songs, and I look forward to more!

Pink Floyd was always a terrific group, but I was always partial to their album Dark Side Of The Moon (Time was on that one). Money is another great song on that one, along with the instrumental Any Color You Like. If you're into the 80s, some great songs are Take On Me by A-Ha, Back On The Chain Gang by The Pretenders, Your Love by The Outfield, Chains Of Love by Erasure. I'm more into 70s music, and Tighter, Tighter by Alive 'N' Kickin', Hot Fun In The Summertime by Sly And The Family Stone, Rock And Roll Hoochie Coo by Rick Derringer, and Rock On by David Essex always take me back to high school in the 70s. My favorite song of all time is The Game Of Love, a collaboration with Michelle Branch and Carlos Santana. Diane, if you did ANY of these songs, you'd probably like them, and it would make my day!

A couple of years ago I found my new favourite band, and quite a while ago they did a tribute to Pink Floyd by covering this song. That's a really good song, and the music does seem to flow smoothly. The church bell sounds reminded me of the clock in one of the churches in the village in the town in which I grew up that used to ring out the time of day. "One man's journey," could be everyone's journey because, even though we are wonderfully individual, deep down we are all really the same - just one basic person - jointly sharing our humanity. Enough philosophical clap trap. Great video, Diane.

In the pre-MTV era, Pink Floyd was THE band for rock visuals. They used to hire design wizards Hipgnosis for their cover art and were also the first ones to use laser shows and projections in a concert. So the video in itself is a bit Hipgnosis-like. Bear in mind however that the band's best albums are those without videoclips, the Roger Waters-led era (he left the band in the mid-Eighties). Check anything from Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here or The Wall and you'll be amazed.

A bit of info about High Hopes. First of all, most of Pink Floyd's famous songs are from the 1970s. High Hopes was from a much later time (1994). They were much older & the song is about how much "sweeter" everything was when they began, yet their ambition remained. I suggest you watch them performing it live for the first time to begin their concert in 94. Seeing them live will make you appreciate them even more. kzbin.info/www/bejne/pnWuga1sgKlrnNU (Notice how it got less reaction than normal from the crowd because nobody knew the song...hehe...it has since become extremely popular.)

80s music isn't exactly a music genre but...there are new artists that are heavily inspired by the 80s sonically like The Weeknd or M83 (very synth-pop) Bat for Lashes at times has a Kate Bush thing going on and for what it's worth Tears for Fears recently released an excellent album titled "The Tipping Point." That's just a taste. Food for thought.

Ah yes, Irish Girl! Over the years, one comes to the realization that Pink Floyd's is dichotomous music. Both Yin and Yang. Ethereal and yet Corporeal at once...Sublime yet Simplistic. So glad you enjoyed it, thanks for sharing. Perhaps the reason for No glib "angel" comment from ED is that she was diggin' the tune too. Besides, there's no denying what is intuitively obvious. I was in college when this song and album came out, and I can honestly say I remember nothing about it. I was surprised it debuted and stayed at number 1, competing against bands like AIC, Metallica, Live, etc. It's a tight song. I liked it.

Oh, is that who is also charting then? So much variety.

Do the live Comfortably Numb, Pulse concert. They do this song as well. Watching the evolution of your face , as the song progressed , reminds me of all of us first time we listened to it. Saw Floyd 4 times starting in 73. I was 13. No adult supervision. Floyd was one of the few bands we'd "camp out" for tickets. I was fortunate to always be dead center no further back than 20th row unless it was outdoors which was the 73 Dark Side concert. Last saw The Wall in 79 (?) in Atlanta. Definitely my favorite band and I've seen most of the greats. Always a great show and awesome crowd. Give Kenny Chesney's, No Shoes No Shirt No Problems , a listen. Not relevant to this conversation. Fun summer beach song. Think you'll enjoy it. Kinda country but, here in Florida, we call it Trop-rock. Think Jimmy Buffet. Keep it up. Capt.Bob, SV ( Sailing Vessel ) 27th Chance, Tampa Fl, USA 🇺🇸

Good band. Second biggest band in the 70s next to Led Zeppelin, of course.

The album "The Division Bell", is largely about (non-) communication and especially about the mentality where simple words can often solve many problems in life. The Division Bell is the name of a bell that rings at the Palace of Westminster, Houses of Parliament (London, UK). The bell indicates to parliamentarians that the debates are coming to an end, this is the end of the discussions, that it's time to move on to the final vote.

I love that this actually has pronounciated clean and clear lyrics. Add the stellar music, bonuses on the lack of conflict between the two. Sad how much music can't do this.

You could also try Pink Floyd's Animals album. Someone synced up an edited animated version of Orwell's Animal Farm to the album. You could make several videos from that, and listen to the whole album. Then you could listen to that whenever you'd like.

I believe Pink Floyd and Steely Dan band names have a similar origin.

this video is why I watch "Band" like "Pulse". Pink Floyd always sounds better live than studio.
