So glad that you are enjoying Pink Floyd. I am 70 years old and have been a fan of this band form the very early stages. Pulse Concert is the best concert I have ever been. If you want spectacle then stick to Pulse for the moment. The Great Gig In The Sky is a must see because it is pure emotion without the use of words. Listen to their studio albums by any means but be sure to be in a relaxed place and listen to their albums in full, not single tracks, because they all have a story to tell.

They pull of the best live versions of their songs. I love your guy's set, colors, lights, and zles Pauls on the wall. Great reaction. Pivk Floyd definitely connects, almost on a soul level. The song is , to me, the human experience. Who of us doesn't long for the beaty , wond, and simplicity of child wonder surrounded by friends, lost is each moment until one day we grow up and get caught up in the rat race. I'm 64 now, and thought I live a great life, the eyes with which I see my world are different from the eyes of the child I once was. Melancholy is spot on. No one on their deathbed wishes they'd spent more time at the office or that they'd made more money. Why wait 'till our deathbed, when there's no time left, to mourn the changes we could have made, but chose not to? It reminds me of the question, how would you live your life if you knew you had only 6 months left to live life. Do that.

I have to say to Carol, for a young 21st century woman, you have great depth to your insight and understanding of this song. I watched your beautiful smile fade and you almost looked like you were going to cry a couple of times, as you totally understood the full meaning of this amazing piece. I also agree with you……this is Pink Floyd’s best song. All the other from this concert are all priceless, but this one reaches into your soul and brings emotions you only know as memories. The other song PF does that is on the same level as this one is,” On the Turning Away “……you must listen to it also, from the live concert in the USA around 1989 I believe. These two songs bring tears to my eyes quite often. Cheers from Canada🎉👍🎸🎶😎🇨🇦

Wow Carol, you got it. The song is meant to “evoke a sense of mourning for the loss of idealism and childhood innocence." A yearning for what was lost, what is past. Looking beyond the embers of bridges glowing behind us To a glimpse of how green it was on the other side Steps taken forwards but sleepwalking back again Dragged by the force of some inner tide High Hopes of youth lost in time to the day to day cares and responsibilities, the force of some inner tide. Yes, the music evokes melancholy, the instrument David Gilmour is playing at the end is known as a Lap steel guitar, slide guitar, or dobro guitar. David speaks more with his guitar than he does with his words. And that was just the opening number of The Division Bell concert tour set. The Pulse album and concert film was recorded on the final nights of the tours performances at Earl's Court London.

While I, un my fifties, have made my peace with the changes over the course if my life. As a kid, I had friends, we played, we imagined and we lived in the moment. It was amazing, and it was the very foundation of the rest if my life. But I cry to this song. Not for me, but fior my extroverted, social amazing 10 year old daughter. Her childhood has been nothing but frustration trying to make friends. And none of them are capable of imaginating, living in the moment and daily play, just play. The very thing she holds most closely as a value, she just can't have in this current era. She is denied all of these things. Sometimes because if ridiculously overprotective parents. Or kids who stay inside most of the time. Or most of all, kids who just don't seem to know how to play, to just... play, or even to socialize. She was born in a socially sterile era where childhood fun amd friendship has been commoditized. For this I am sad.

Carol, you are exactly correct on the meaning of the song and the difference between this and Comfortably Numb. Comfortably Numb is a very personal experience by one person which may not be relatable to everyone. Lyrically.High Hopes is more universally relatable. We all go through these experiences in our life, the hopes and dreams of our youth and the regrets we face in our later years of what we may have missed or what life has become. I saw them twice on this tour and I was in my late 20's. I loved the song and understood its meaning, but now in my late 50's the song has a much deeper meaning. Great reaction!! If you haven’t heard Nightwish they are normally a female fronted symphonic metal band but their version of High Hopes is an older recording and their bassist Marko is on vocals. Highly recommend. If you end up liking Nightwish then move on to the song Ghost Love Score live at Wacken 2013 (German music festival pronounced Vacken). You won’t be disappointed.

@@w.geoffreyspaulding6588 I agree. Looking from afar, I think David finds his happiness in his family and his music. Roger is a bundle of ego and anger, and probably not happy. It's clear which one stokes the "feud" - Gilmour never says anything about it unless it's in response to something Roger said, or an interview question. But the good news is, Gilmour is favoring us with one more solo album in September - I'm so glad he hasn't hung it up for good! If he tours, I'm willing to spend a lot and travel far to see him.

To give you an idea of how great pink Floyd are, when Ren hit no. 1 in the UK pink Floyd was at no. 7 with dark side of the moon. 50 years later. Now that's a sign of a legend

As a Old Person . This Band was the TOPS in my life , along with Joe Cocker, and Frank Zappa and Bob Marley and of course the Kinks and Rolling Stones. And throw in a bit of Velvet Underground and others.

You hit it right on the head, sweetie. That’s what it is the passage of time and how things will seem much better when you were younger… The innocence of youth And it’s OK if this song has more meaning to than comfortably numb the thing would comfortably numb is. The concert version is twice as long as the studio version and the way they made it and to play it like that was amazing. That’s why everyone loves it, but I understand that and this might mean a lot more to you , it’s the same for me😊❤️

I just love his reaction to all these Pulse renditions....he really feels it. Awesome to think that generations will be getting the same joy from the band's music long after they (and us!) have shuffled off our mortal coil...
