As an old timer from Oklahoma, I was around when many of these songs and artists made their way up the Top 40 charts. Since I was raised in an ultra conservative town where folks didn't accept people who looked like Prince, I was taught not to like Prince. Thank God that later in life I learned the truth - you can't judge people or their talent on the basis of skin color, religion, race, or their dress code! Prince was an unbelievably-gifted vocalist, guitarist, and musician. I don't know of a guitarist active today that can keep up with Prince. He was also an accomplished pianist/keyboardist, drummer, bassist and saxophonist. He played ALL instruments on his first two albums, "For You" and "Prince".
