"Conquistador" from the same concert, as well as "A Salty Dog" is amazing. Another one of my favourite Procol Harum songs is "Whiskey Train" (studio version) which also showcases Robin Trower's incredible guitar along with a massive dose of cowbell.

Gary was NOT the same singer when he originally sang this in the 60s. This is a completely different level, his voice got better and better over the decades as well as his phrasing and expression. Listen to that original recording by Procol Harum, he's vocally lightyears beyond that stage he was in at that time.

Gary Brooker always had that blissful tobacco & Whiskey patina to his voice. My siblings were much older than me (15, 14, & 8 years my senior), so I grew up with this music from the 60's on upward. It's during that period that we changed and evolved into a whole new realm of the "legendary" as a society. I'm grateful for the wealth that lives in memory now. The singer, Gary Brooker, passed a few years ago. He wrote most of Procol Harum's music to lyrics written by Keith Reid. This song was a blessing and a curse for the success of the band. It was a world-wide phenomenon that just could never be achieved by them or most any group. However, even after several line-up changes, Procol Harum continued to write, record, and perform up until Brooker's death. I was fortunate to see one of their last shows. Please do yourself a favor and deep dive their material. Much of it is Baroque influenced, but also the could hit hard. There was only one Procol Harum.

One of the most award-winning and best-selling and most-covered songs in rock music history. It is musically based on a famous tune by Johann Sebastian Bach, the Air from his Orchestral Suite No. 3 2. Air, BWV 1068, (AKA the "Air on the G string") Elsewhere here on KZbin is an interview with Gary Brooker where he says "If you trace the chordal element, it does a bar or two of Bach's 'Air on a G String' before it veers off. That spark was all it took. I wasn't consciously combining rock with classical, it's just that Bach's music was in me." Check out other KZbin videos that discuss the many modern popular music hits that were inspired by or based on (or ripped-off) J.S.Bach and other "classical" composers.

I saw PH many times as a four-sometimes-five piece group way back when at Fillmore East and other venues around Long Island New York. Believe it or not the band kept its gravitas even as a rock band. They always sounded great. And people sometimes forget that Robin Trower is on guitar. As for the 'confusing' lyrics, I believe the song is a psychedelic fantasy. Another epic song by PH is: 'A Salty Dog.' It's about a ghost ship and its sailor's souls sighting land, signaling an end to their long quest to make it home again.
