do yourself a big gift and listen to Procol Harum performing A Salty Dog (An Old English Dream with the Danish National Concert Orchestra and choir at Ledreborg Castle, Denmark in August 2006) the same gig as this performance. the song is a masterpiece and Gary Brooker (the singer) is unbeliavable. you will thank me for the suggestion.....i'm sure.

"Conquistador" from the same concert, as well as "A Salty Dog" is amazing. Another one of my favourite Procol Harum songs is "Whiskey Train" (studio version) which also showcases Robin Trower's incredible guitar along with a massive dose of cowbell.

Gary was NOT the same singer when he originally sang this in the 60s. This is a completely different level, his voice got better and better over the decades as well as his phrasing and expression. Listen to that original recording by Procol Harum, he's vocally lightyears beyond that stage he was in at that time.

The late great Gary Brooker was good in 1967 when Procol Harum released this masterpiece. Much like fine wine, as Gary aged, his voice was no longer good, but went beyond great. Then you add the orchestra and choir and you will never hear a better performance of this. Though Gary is no longer with us, he will never be forgotten, and this is why.

I second your comment, 'we may be old', I'm 80, I used to listen to records played by the Pirate Radio ship, Radio Luxumberg, berthed in the English Channel, in the 50s, 60s. The BBC had a music monopoly then, and only they could play records. Great music in those years. 😁

Ah, Procol Harum! They are a British rock band formed in the 1960s. You might be most familiar with their iconic song, "A Whiter Shade of Pale," which became one of the defining tracks of the Summer of Love in 1967. With its haunting melody and enigmatic lyrics, it's a classic that has stood the test of time. The band's blend of baroque pop and progressive rock set them apart in the music scene.

Gary Brooker always had that blissful tobacco & Whiskey patina to his voice. My siblings were much older than me (15, 14, & 8 years my senior), so I grew up with this music from the 60's on upward. It's during that period that we changed and evolved into a whole new realm of the "legendary" as a society. I'm grateful for the wealth that lives in memory now. I don't think that we put out too many artists like this to carry the torch. R.I.P, Gary.

The singer, Gary Brooker, passed a few years ago. He wrote most of Procol Harum's music to lyrics written by Keith Reid. This song was a blessing and a curse for the success of the band. It was a world-wide phenomenon that just could never be achieved by them or most any group. However, even after several line-up changes, Procol Harum continued to write, record, and perform up until Brooker's death. I was fortunate to see one of their last shows. Please do yourself a favor and deep dive their material. Much of it is Baroque influenced, but also the could hit hard. There was only one Procol Harum.

His voice had hardly changed after 39 years since this track was originally released as a aingle. Vale Gary Brooker.

Wow! That’s incredible especially after all those years of singing. He must have had great vocal technique! Thanks for stopping by!

This was released in 1967, and we were in the first throes of the Vietnam War. My friends and I had graduated from high school and all our boyfriends and uncles were being drafted and dying in that darn country weekly. We would meet at one another house weekly, play the grooves off this record, and cry over the ones we lost that week. A beautiful song and I'll NEVER forget it, but it brings back such a sadness to me every time I hear it. Just subscribed to your channel. Looking for some great music....thanks for what you do.

Procol Harum was a band and believe me the band back in 1967 had just 4 in it the organist & lead guitar singer of course & drummer and they were just as good back then.

The lady on the oboe has unbelievable lung capacity! I played oboe and it takes a lot of power to make a decent sound...yet she held clear notes in succession with a beautiful tone for what seemed to be at least a full minute. Wow!
