Freddie was so vicious in his words that Brian didn't even want to sing it. Freddie, of course, didn't give up. It became the first diss song, but it's awesome. Thank you so much for this great reaction!

There is a precursor diss track to this one that Queen managed (pun intended) to slip past the management this one was aimed at "Flick of the Wrist", which was part diss track and part warning to other artists to read all the fine print before signing a contract.

Their former manager Norman Sheffield died in 2014 and Brian posted the following message: "Sad to report the passing of Queen's first manager, Norman Sheffield. We had our differences of course, but, in the Grand Scheme of Things, all the water had long since flowed under the bridge. Our sincere condolences to his family. RIP Norman."

If I’m not mistaken, he sued them for libel after this song came out. And they eventually settled out of court & went on to John Reid (who they also fell out with, eventually, but with whom they made a LOT of money). So it was a really was water under the bridge by 2014!

Songfacts got it wrong - it was Brian who was unsure about the song lyrics, but Freddie insisted on recording it. When Freddie first told the band about the song they were very enthusiastic, but when he played it they were a little shocked with how hateful the lyrics was. Norman Sheffield sued Freddie for "defamation of character" and tried to stop the song from being released. They settled out of court and released the record anyway. It wasn't just about the money - Freddie felt that Norman didn't value him and didn't respect him enough. And it wasn't the first song about him - a year earlier Freddie wrote the song "Flick of the Wrist" which was about signing the contract with Trident. It was very unusual for Freddie to be that angry, especially in his songs, because he was a very kind person and always gave people second chances.

Of course, they never named Sheffield in the song - he actually OUTED HIMSELF by suing Freddie.

The band could have just said it was about a fictious person and I'm sure that's what their lawyers told them to say but Freddy was pissed and wasn't having it so they reached and out of court settlement.

Freddie showing his arse to the audience at every concert is a “tribute” 😏 to Norman Sheffield. Apparently he swindled them out of money. Freddie just didn’t write the song for the sake of it. There was every good reason for it.🤩

"You're a sewer rat decaying in a cesspool of pride" has to be one of the most vicious lines in a song. I've heard it so many times, but that line still stings when I hear it. It ends suddenly because it goes right into the next song "Lazing On A Sunday Afternoon".
@aussiebloke609

I'm partial to "Do you feel like suicide? I think you should!" partly for the vitriol. and partly just because you couldn't record that line these days without someone claiming to be "offended" and getting it censored. Things were better back then, and people had thicker skins...and could think for themselves.

Although Brian can get real salty if he's pissed off enough. I recall at least one interview where he was so pissed off at the politicians calling for a badger cull he went off. Also the time he was going to debate someone and they never showed up and he was VERY smug and called them a coward lol. Maybe he's learned to give fewer fucks in his old age.

@@katelynna10000 Yes to both of those and then there was another one I believe in Germany where he was being interviewed supposedly about their shows that evening and perhaps a couple more nights. The interviewer kept going off topic, Brian was exhausted and even told the guy he would rather be sleeping. Brian ended up walking out on the interview, coming back, apologizing, and when the interviewer continued going off topic, Brian just told the guy he wasn't going to do this and left quite pissed off.

Norman Sheffield was the Manager that our beautiful Freddie showed his arse to at Live Aid. They did this at apparently the mistreatment and abuse they suffered by him. This song is "dedicated to ....... HIM". He in actual fact wrote a book later on called "Life on Two Legs : Setting the Record Straight" in which he tried to justify all the scenarios with The Beatles, Bowie, Queen & Elton John. RIP my hero Freddie, a life in songs xxxxx

The story I heard about their time with Trident that stood out the most was about Brian's health crisis is 1974. At the end of their first American tour, as openers for Mott the Hoople, after the release of Queen 2, Brian got VERY sick. I believe he collapsed just off stage at the end of one of the final shows. Everyone, of course, wanted to take him to the closest hospital, but Trident said they wouldn't pay for a hospital in America, and to come back to London to get it looked at. He was in really bad shape, and everyone was super scared. Well, they eventually got him to a London hospital. It turned out he had not only a bad infection in his arm, but also Hepatitis. There was apparently talk of the possibility of amputating his arm if they couldn't get the infection under control! They obviously did, thank goodness, but Brian was in the hospital for weeks. But my fellow Queenies, the story of Trident's shittiness doesn't end there. Oh no. The more observant among you may know that both Queen 2 and Sheer Heart Attack were released in '74. Reportedly, the boys were back home for maybe 2 weeks, Brian's still in the hospital, when Sheffield calls and says 'Oi you guys better get working on that next album! You made us cut that tour short so you better make up for it!'. They had to start recording the album with Brian still in the hospital! It's no wonder Queen's other trident diss track, Flick of the Wrist, is on that album. So yah, Freddie was PISSED and we got a great song out of it. Honestly it's between Death on 2 Legs and Prophet's song for my favorite song on Night at the Opera (although I'm also very fond of '39 and, of course, BoRhap).

So awesome! As you've read, this was a diss track against their first manager Norman Sheffield, who really treated them like cash cows. To add a bit more detail, the last straws were when Roger Taylor was told to stop breaking his drum sticks ("they couldn't afford more") and when John Deacon was denied a down payment for a house for him and his fiancee. The song "Flick of the wrist" is also considered a stab at Norman, indicating that with a Flick of the wrist, they sign a deal with the devil. Live at the rainbow is a fantastic, raw rendition! kzbin.info/www/bejne/jqOsi4RpeLF_mLc They say that whenever Freddie would sometimes show the crowds his ass at concerts, he was still getting back at Sheffield and anyone else who mistreated them or spoke badly about them.

Quick story: In 1975 when Bohemian Rhapsody was released, my big brother Rusty was great about being my connection to great music. He heard it come on the radio and grabbed me to come hear it with him. We both thought it was so different and original. Soon after, my sister bought the single of the song and I enjoyed hearing it with her. Eventually she decided I could not borrow her record, so I went to the store to by my own copy. I was sad to learn the single was no longer in the store. By then You're My Best Friend was out as a single. I had heard and liked it, so I decided I was just going to take the plunge and get the LP. That was a big thing for this 11 year old. I owe many thanks to my sister's refusal to share, because A Night At The Opera immediately became my favorite album. So many different sounds and styles, and they really did it mostly tongue in cheek. I was hooked. In those days it was not easy to find out such information as what inspired Death On Two Legs (Dedicated to ...). When the Live Killers album came out they bleeped out the part of Freddie's intro that explained who it was. It was MANY years later that I finally learned. I was proud when in college my son decided to write a paper about the song and its inspiration. Did he go too far? Not for me. It made for a great song.

I was a 14 year old punk growing up in Orange County, California, when I saw an album sitting next to my family's stereo, which my sister had just bought. I hadn't heard anything from it, but the album cover intrigued me, and I was familiar with Queen from the 'Killer Queen' song a year earlier. I put the album on the turntable and I was immediately blown away with the opening track, 'Death On Two Legs'. The entire song I was thinking holy shit, this song is f'ing awesome! The power and the energy from the song was mind blowing. As a 14 year old teenage boy, I could direct a song like that towards just about any body. Then I proceeded to listen to the rest of 'ANATO' album, and I was completely hooked. Although I will mention that I didn't like 'Bohemian Rhapsody' the first few times I listened to it, except for the guitar portion. I did however come to love 'Bohemian Rhapsody', and 'ANATO' is one of my favorite albums of all time.

First and only Diss song I heard and loved.😅 I heard from documentaries, early from their management that Freddie wanted a grand piano, but was refused to give by the management, Roger breaking sticks but was told to don't break more sticks 'cos no money, and John Deacon wanted a little advance payment to buy a small flat but was refused by the mgt. They're also headlining at that time but they didn't seen any money while their manager bought a new RR. It affected Freddie deeply and ended up writing this song,...😬😬😬 so don't mess with Freddie🤨😅😅😅 Great video Miss Doe 💛👏👏👏 I l

I liked the sound of Freddie's voice best in this song it was raspy . He had a who give a F, attitude and no auto tune the only thing they did was use a multi tract so it sounded like more people were singing but not used in every song which I thought was a good idea even live it was them no tract needed. We always say Freddie the rest of Queen needs to be acknowledged.

In one of the documentaries, Brian tells the story of the production manager they trusted to look after everything for them. They made a lot of money and it was all going into the bank, or so they thought. When they discovered there was nothing, they asked where their money was and the guy came back with excuse after excuse, until they sacked him and had to repay all their debts over the next couple of years as they started again, financially.

I was speechless the first time I heard this too, Freddie doesn’t hold back! It’s aimed squarely at Norman Sheffield their former manager who was stealing all their money. The band were still living in relative squalor, they couldn’t afford to pay their crew or their lighting guys, but Sheffield was swanning around in a brand new Rolls Royce and building a swimming pool. Freddie was ropable, obviously. They did another diss song before this one called Flick of the Wrist which is just a scathing. Anyway they parted ways with Trident and joined with John Reid. He was the one who sent them off to a farm with instructions to write whatever they wanted and the result was A Night at the Opera, and the rest is history.

Jim Beach reached them, got them, what was then, the most money ever handed over for an album and said go make a record. a Night At The Opera was. The result, Your My Best Friend was from John to his Wife, prophet song was Brian as he recovered from Hepatitis he picked up in the US (IS about Noah in a way) which lead straight into Love Of My Life which was Freddie to Mary, the true Love Of His Life, she was his world, just not when it came to sec, her word held more sway than anyone elses, they truly still live each other very deeply.

About halfway through the song I thought to myself "hmm, could this have been the first ever diss track?" Weird synchronicity !

There's a lot of production thrown into this track. And all of it is brilliant. Wouldn't have it any other way. So much going on but in all the right ways.

On the album this song ends abruptly and immediately goes in to "Lazing on a Sunday Afternoon", which is a song with an entirely different tone.

All those sounds you were hearing at the beginning of the song (other than Freddie's piano) were produced by Brian's guitar.

I love how Freddie insults him in an artistic way in this song. So much 'insult poetry' in the lyrics. And music top notch as always: the piano intro, some weird effects with the cymbals, the guitars the voices, the bass is amazing. Doing all that in 1975 when you only had tapes to record, kudos to their producer as well (Roy Thomas Baker). This album is a jewel an they were actually poor at the moment of recording it, it was the last shot probably.

In the early years of Queen, they were very poor. But their manager drove a new Rolls Royce. After this, Queen terminated the contract with the manager.

Most Queen fans would know this, but 'Death on two legs' on the album is followed instantly by 'Lazing on a Sunday afternoon', which is a touch of 1920's style Noel Coward (the best way I could explain it). In typical Queen fashion they went from one extreme to another, but its a wonderful piece of music. Whatever style of music Queen did, they did it well.

The moral of the story is..... don't piss off Fred! The subject of the song (their previous manager) sued them and was awarded compensation. But.... with a masterpiece like that on their best album, Queen clearly won, and have won ever since!

This is not an Angry Freddie, if you will excuse the gratuitous alliteration this is the Finally Free Furious Freddie. Supposedly Freddie agonized over these lyrics, not because he was worried he had gone too far, but because he wanted to get as many insults in as possible while still creating a great piece of music. It was Brian that felt this song went too far, which is why you will only find one unedited live performance. At no point has any member of Queen put a name to the three dots, but as soon as the song was released Norman Sheffield sued the band for defamation of character, thus firmly attaching his name to this creatively insulting start to the 'A Night at the Opera' album. There is a precursor to this song from the 'Sheer Heart Attack' album 'Flick of the Wrist', which is part diss track and part warning about the dangers of signing a contract without taking the time to appreciate the consequences. It was very carefully written in order to slip it past the management it was aimed at, as a result many people missed the meaning until this was released and the law suit happened.
