Look at Freddie's expression on his face, you can tell how disgusted he is with the playback performance. At least they did not put the blue tape strips on Roger's cymbals as they had done in the "Killer Queen" video. Freddie even turns his back while he supposedly is still singing. 😂😂So typical, you just have to love him❣

Yes, “Hot Space” was controversial back then. The influence of that Prenter guy (ugh) caused a lot of tension in the band. But regardless of what they were expected to do back then, them four were amazing musicians, very versatile and eclectic. They could pull off almost anything! I think only hardcore Queen fans could throughly enjoy the “Hot Space” album. It is GOOD, people! My favorite, “Staying Power” by Freddie, album version, Arif Marden horn arrangement. INSANE!! 👏🏽 Brian even wrote “Despacito” in this “Palabras…” song decades before the big hit nowadays! Pioneer! Our dear Brian wrote this song with Spanish words there to honor of all of us in Latin America for the warm welcome we gave them in 1980- 1981. His spoken Spanish is actually very very good! Listen to him on a Venezuelan interview. Amazing! Dr. May, what a guy 👍🏽

The "Hot Space" album gets a bad rap. Side B of the album is as good as any of their material from the '80s, and even though side A is mostly disco, it's wonderfully produced and has memorable hooks. And I don't care what anyone says; "Another One Bites the Dust" from "The Game" is also a disco tune, and no one seems to have a problem with that.
@mikephillips88102 жыл бұрын
It also became a message of peace between Britain and Argentina when the Falklands/Malvinas conflict broke out. The band always tried to keep out of politics. I bought Hot Space when it came out and was quite shocked by it, I was a hard rocker at the time and all that funk stuff...though I grew to like it. Some of those songs became much better live, like 'Staying Power' - I saw Queen live twice that year, 1982. 'Dancer' was something of a forerunner/foreshadow to Michael Jackson's 'Beat It' - a funky song containing a heavy metal guitar solo.

The positive of all the criticism they received for ‘going disco’ was the awesome Hot space tour. They really seemed hell bent on rocking it up a notch to show the critics . Even the ‘disco’ tracks rock out on that. Check out Ryan Newton of this parish , he’s uploaded some awesome gigs from this tour . Edinburgh ‘bath house’ as Freddie refers to it and some of the German shows are incredible.

So glad you're back with Queen, Doe. I've missed you. I love the "Hot Space" album. Have you heard "Back Chat"? John Deacon wrote it. Both Roger and Brian hated it, and dance music in general. Freddie and I loved it. I think the only live version of this one is Live at the Bowl '82 and it was played way too fast IMO. It would be great if you could react to the "In the Lap of the Gods" from Live at the Rainbow '74. One of my most favorite performances! It is the start of a medley with three more tunes, all magnificent.

So GOOD to see you Doe, AND Missy! I know... Freddie looks so gorgeous and in his prime here, I CANNOT ever watch this without MELTING. And Sir Brian... Is it POSSIBLE to do any more multitasking?!?😄 I love how the guys all get to choose whatever they want to wear, so you have Bri in some kind of bomber jacket. Deaky's wearing the same outfit that he wore for Queen's 1982 appearance on Saturday Night Live when they performed "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" and "Under Pressure". (Which sadly ended up being their LAST-ever appearance on American TV, outside of Live Aid, thanks to the MTV cronies blocking "I Want To Break Free" and thus PISSING off Freddie - NEVER piss off Freddie! But I'm digressing, SORRY.) I personally LIKE Hot Space... I just think it got a "bad rap" because it was "different". P.S. This is just an UNRELATED SIDE-NOTE... It happened to come to mind when you mentioned them having mimed this performance, but has to do with the Wembley concert - which I know you haven't gotten into yet: Just FYI (in case this is something that would matter to you)... In the commonly-seen video of the opening for the concert, "One Vision" - so this includes the official video on Queen's channel - there is some QUITE significant overdubbing that was done in (just a little bit of) Freddie's vocals. It was done when they were preparing the concert for video release...I really don't know WHY they did this, because I think his original vocals sound FANTASTIC... but they overdubbed with his studio vocals on a couple of lines, to put in higher-sung lines than what he actually sang live. ANYWAY... There IS available on KZbin, videos from two different sources, with the opening "One Vision" performance that has the ORIGINAL LIVE sound minus the studio overdubbing. I recognize that you always use Queen's official videos - which is understandable - but, I just wanted to share the information.🤗

Playback isn't Queen. They are Performers, who had to do it live. Or without the crowd in the studio in perfection. Nothing else. I think 'Hot Space' is more Deaky's LP, than Brians or Rogers. Maybe that's why Deaky looks satisfied and cool.😉

A little context: Queen had Toured South America (Argentina and Brazil) in Feb/march 1981, and they were completely amazed by the audience's response (especially the Argentina crowd), if you ever see “love of my life “ from Argentina ‘81, you will see brian just stop playing the guitar and shaking his head in disbelief, that is why they decided to pay a little tribute to the Spanish speaking audience, unfortunately, war broke between Argentina and UK in April ‘82, nevertheless if you pay attention right before “love of my life” in Milton Keynes ‘82, which was during the war, Brian plays a few chords from “Las palabras de amor” and dedicates the song to the people fighting “no matter where they come from”

I think of "Hot Space" as a bold move from a band that could easily have created yet another album in the same vein as "The Game". That was the first album with their new German producer, Reinhold Mack - but still a fairly traditional rock album. I definetely don't think of "Hot Space" as a mistake. But they are perhaps playing with genres where they didn't excel like they usually did, so it was no surprise that the critics butchered it back then. In direct competition with other pop chart hits from 1982-1983 the songs aren't impressive... "Noblesse oblige", as they say. Queen was an exceptional rock band that managed to remain incredibly succesful even after radically changing the sound that made them famous in the first place. I really don't think any other band has achieved that. Their following album (their first global hit album "The Works") is often mentioned as a 'step back to the roots', but soundwise it is still radically different from their legendary albums from the 1970s. And I don't think "The Works" could have been made without "Hot Space".

I think this song was number one in Argentina on the moment the Falklands war between UK and Argentina started (wich was 2 weeks after Queen's shows there). It was a huge hit in Southern America but not so much in the rest of the world. (26 in both Flanders and the Netherlands). This is one of the only two songs i really like from this album, the other one is of course Under Pressure. Hot Space is , for Queen standards, not a brilliant one as it's an experiment that didnt work out well, though It's not as bad as some people say. Fun fact : the video for Body language (wich i think is one of their worst songs) is in the Guiness book of records as the first video ever to be banned by MTV. I havent seen you doing songs from the A kind of Magic album so I'd love to hear your opinon about "Don't lose your head". Freddie's singing is impressive on that song. Hot Space is a mix. More than half of the album's the not-so-beloved "I'm totally disco now"-tracks, which have aged rather poorly with that phase being locked on to the thought that this phase got Freddie into the crosshairs of a certain disease. It's not that they're _bad_ disco-pop tracks, it's just that they're not exactly the genres-defying real greatness that Queen can achieve. Las Palabras De Amor is a nice track, but again, it's not like it's blowing anyone's mind from a creativity/quality point of view. Still a good track, just not the perfection we came to expect. :) As I usually say: Hot Space is not a _bad_ album per se, but it is put in perspective to other _Queen_ albums.
@DoeDarling2 жыл бұрын
Yes as a standalone album I like it (what I've heard so far anyway!) but if you try and compare it, then yes I understand

Oh, another thought that comes to mind: It's also that while Queen was known for pushing the envelope with their albums, this overall just seemed much more a "trying to fit in" vibe in the early 80s. It's of course much different to listen to it now than it was when it was new. That end-of-70s disco funk bop sound was not the future then. I feel musically, they got their act back together with "The Works".
@j0hnf_uk2 жыл бұрын
Can you tell they really didn't like doing, 'Top Of the Pops', performances? 🤣 Their hearts really aren't in the whole miming to a backing track on a TV performance, thing. But then, they never were. The, 'Hot Space', album wasn't all that well received by fans when it was first released. A far cry from their usual output that knocked a lot of fans out of kilter with what they expected from Queen. This song and, 'Under Pressure', did ok, chart-wise, though.
