They didnt want to play this performance because the TV show insisted that they lip-sync it. Freddie was appalled and said, "We either play or we dont. We dont use recordings!" So, they werent even going to do it, but their manager convinced them that it would be a bad look for them to cancel. They reluctantly "played", but, it seems the performance is very lackluster compared to when they are playing live. You can kind of tell that they werent into it, to me.

haha great timing for a new Queen song because it's Deaky's birthday today!! But to be honest there's never a wrong timing for a new Queen video. Oh and my top 3 Queen songs (i don't have a top 3 because i love all of them but i think you REALLY need to hear these songs): 1. Lily of the valley (just. Beautifull.) 2. Top of the Pops (TOTP) was a British music chart television program on the BBC that consisted of performances from some of that week's best-selling popular music records. Every performer wanted to appear on TOTP because it always would help promote a song. Queen, of course, was thrilled the first time they were scheduled but the band then got pissed when they learned that the show didn't allow the bands to perform live. They had to lip-sync to their record. Roger & Brian's guitars were plugged in and even the drum set that Roger played was a dud (the cymbals were made of some sort of plastic). When they performed "Killer Queen" live, Freddie always played the piano while he sang.

Top of the Pops is a British television show, and the longest running weekly program ever, running from 1964 to 2006. Performing on Top of the Pops was a huge deal for an artist. Also, Killer Queen is a hell of a track. Also also, that was definitely the studio version of the song - either the band was lip syncing on Top of the Pops, a thing that IIRC was the show's format, or someone overdubbed the album version over their footage on TotP.

1) Who Wants to Live Forever (especially the live version from Budapest) 2) The Show Must Go On 3) Somebody to Love I can't remember if you've reacted to my #1, but I don't think the other two are hidden bangers, haha! I know you said you love The Show Must Go On too. Also, Top of the Pops was a show that aired "live" performances of new and popular music, which was a huge way to get exposure back then. Music videos weren't a thing yet - actually, they made the music video for Bohemian Rhapsody for Top of the Pops to air instead because they had a scheduling conflict and couldn't come perform it. It was one of the first music videos ever and became a huge hit. You can tell that Roger in particular here isn't happy - I've never seen him play the drums so half-heartedly, haha, even though this *is* a lighter song. Notice also that you can hear piano but Freddie isn't "playing" here. I love his look, though! He still rocked the performance, as unhappy as he was about it. Since he didn't need to actually play the piano he took the opportunity to take center stage. Top of the Pops didn't have live singing, which Queen hated, but they desperately needed the exposure. This was their first huge international hit (they'd already made it pretty big in Japan, though!) Bohemian Rhapsody came the following year.

it's impossible to pick just 3 favorite songs. i can't even pick 10 to be honest, but i usually refer to "killer queen" as my favorite if i have to say one. it would be fun to see you react to "back chat" and/or "body language" though. i never see anyone reacting to those or other songs from the hot space album(except from "under pressure"). by the way, i've seen a few people comment false information on this video and probably on other videos too so don't believe everything you read. queen fans do usually provide good info but sometimes there is nonsense.
