The craziest thing about this song, to me, is how many people think it's a love song...love songs don't compare "the one I love" to "a simple prop to occupy my time" lol

Seven videos in one night? Killing it. What an awesome list. And you nailed it -- '80s alternative. This song kinda is specifically one of those songs that opened the floodgates to grunge and '90s alternative. They sort of picked the scab of the American consciousness and it all bled out in the next decade. One cannot underestimate REM's influence on the '90s. Started with tracks like this and Radio Free Europe and Can't Get There From Here and Gardening At Night, all stuff off their Eponymous album that was their early stuff -- it's their FIRST "greatest hits" album and was issued in 1988, so they already had a huge body of work by 1990.

"The One I Love" was a top ten hit for R.E.M. in 1987. So no longer alternative, but mainstream. I met R.E.M. backstage after one of their concerts in 1986. I got their autographs while my buddy talked philosophy with singer Michael Stipe. For their other hits from the 80's, check out "Radio Free Europe", "So. Central Rain (I'm Sorry)", "Driver 8", "Fall on Me", "It's the End of the World as We Know It (And I Feel Fine)" and for a few worthy deep cuts from them, check out "Gardening At Night", "7 Chinese Brothers", and "(Don't Go Back To) Rockville" among others.

I can't tell you how many times I have listen to "Life Rich Pageant" love it so much. Like a lot of people I discovered them in the late 80s. I was working a part time retail job while in college at the time, a coworker who became a good buddy was a huge audiophile and R.E.M. fan; he gave me many a birthday and Xmas gift that were CDs of the early R.E.M albums.

It's not going to win any polls for REM as there's just so many songs & it's pretty understated, but I love `Nightswimming` from `Automatic for the People` (1992). The little half yodel Stipe does reminds me of Kurt Cobain (who was inspired by Stipe).

REM's sounds evolved through their albums, this was their 5th album, and they were opening up their sound to reach a wider audience. The sound was more driving, more direct. Early REM is more murky and quirky. Later REM was more pop, and more lush. This was from 1987, and around the time of the Smiths, so production styles were similar. Check out Driver 8 or Fall on Me for some other great early REM tracks.

This is not a love song. The lyric “ a simple prop to occupy my time “ shows how people use the word love to cover any manner of sins. “ This one goes out to the one I left behind “ is basically saying out with the old, in the new… but when I was with you I said I loved you. A very misunderstood song just Every Breath You Take by The Police is not above love but about possession and stalking. And Born in the USA by Bruce Springsteen is not patriotic but rather about young men being sent to kill/die for a country’s ideology.
@deanadewall8400

Funny thing is...its not actually a love song. He's referring to the person with the line "a simple prop, to occupy my time". Michael Stipe of REM once called love songs "odious". He didn't like writing them. Still one of the best alternative rock bands from the 80s and 90s. Definitely recommend the older stuff. Finest Worksong is a good one from this same album. FYI, per your comment, don't be surprised that R.EM. sounds alternative, because you should know, that REM was THE FIRST American alternative band. THEY STARTED the sound!! Their first album was in like 1981. Actually, I just looked it up, the first Smiths Album came in 1984, so REM beat them. The only alternative band that beats REM, is The Cure, I think Robert Smith started putting out music in 1978. But REM is a close second. And a first for the US, I think. People only know their later music, in the late 90's, which sadly, I don't think is as good.

This song, years later, makes me thing of every girl I dated (or wanted to date) in High School. I especially like the songs where MIke Mills does backup/harmony vocals along with Michael Stipe. You're so right on about how you can't really pin down R.E.M. to a specific style. They expanded their horizons with every album, and for me are solidly in the category of bands that could do no wrong.

You should listen R.E.M.'s song 'Drive'. You could watch the music video of that song too. :)

I love this song. But if it's a love letter, then it's either a cynical or at least a very confusing one. "The one is love... a simple prop to occupy my time... another prop has occupied my time." That's either harsh, or it's said by someone who doesn't know how to make sense of his own feelings of love and sadness. What's the fire? Is it good because he burned the bridges behind him and now carries on with 'other props'? Or is it bad because the love still burns inside of him? Anyway, I love the song, because at first hearing it 'just' sounds like a very straightforward and powerful song, both lyrically and musically, but there's much more to it, I think. I find it very gripping.
