Fist full of steel could be the mic that amplifies his or our voice that could be used as a weapon or a actual weapon in my opinion.

Man, I've been listening to Rage since I was like 10 or something. What I find beautiful about them is that the older I get the more nuance I am able to glean from their message. What began as angst and anger toward... well whatever (as kids can be) has informed much of my moral compass. Every time you peel back a layer it's just as dense, meaningful and true as the previous. So long as we hate each other and not the system which asks us to do so, Rage will always be relevant. Forever thankful not only to have them in my life now, but to have had them with me as I've grown. Fuck yeah. Go Rage.

He often uses the raised fist to represent his active resistance to the complicity to atrocities intrinsic in our society. His fist full of Steele could be describing the strength of his resolve to rebel, as well as describing the nature of his rebellion, i.e. spoken poetry through a microphone.

@jennhodson9090 3 жыл бұрын
I've always interpretted 'fistful of steel' as the mic, but it is lyrically brilliant enough that it could be open to other meanings. Likewise, as for 'let me do the cutting' -- I never thought of that as violent or annialiation, but rather cutting the mental strings that bind you to this complacency and silence. Keeping with a theme -- his words are his weapons and his power. Similarly, I interpret "Bullet in the Head" and the line about "in house drive-by" as being about television. He uses violent metaphors for things that aren't physically violent, but mentally so. (My reading of a lot of RATM; feel free to disagree.)
@steamr0ll

I know I am really late to the party here but: To me the fist full of steel is a metaphor for whatever force we can bring to bear for our cause - A gun, a sword, a microphone, a pen, a lever that controls a machine etc. Wars are won on many fronts and the message RAtM screamed out 30 years ago is more urgent than ever today. The steel in our fists is the power we wield at the polls or in unions or by not putting up with dehumanizing shit on a day-to-day. May kindness and empathy prevail.

The words Arm The Homeless has the cool story. It begins in early RATM's form in Whiskey. Tom Morello is a huge fan of Woody Guthrie, Woody himself wrote on his guitar: This machine kills fascists. So Morello think: If we "Arm the Homeless", they at least would be steven with the cops

Love the unpacking - where were you when I was obsessed with rage in '93?! I think most 40 yo like myself leaned 70/30 music to lyrics when Rage was current ... and I'm not sure that's what Zach de la Rocha had in mind when they released these jams. They were trying to make timeless music that mattered, and hit hard. Well done. Keep it up.

Zack is a master lyricist, however here I think that he is talking about an actual weapon probably a gun or perhaps a machete with so many talks about cutting and with his wording of "madboy grips the microphone, WITH a fistful of steel" although you could also say maybe he is grabbing the microphone with a steel courage.

Son of a Zapatista separatist, i don’t think he’s too far removed from the idea of taking up arms as a show of political or cultural protest. I don’t think that’s his end goal, but political radicals have radical boundaries that surpass those of joe blow with his head up his ass. I think he just wants ppl to get pissed off at a lot of fucked up shit that they’ve been propagandized into accepting as normal.

You mentioned seppuku (Harakiri) early on, but didn’t make the connection to “But if ya bowin' down, then let me do the cuttin'” The traditional method of performing Seppuku involves the person kneeling down, then cutting their belly open, allowing their guts to spill out. Immediately following this, an assistant decapitates the person.

They’ve always been a hugely political band but I’ve always felt that people who initially become interested in their music aren’t generally politically minded people. As these new fans begin to understand the message in their music, they become more interested in politics. Much like the band Propagandhi, RATM were a life raft for me growing up as an Anarchist in rural Tennessee. To me, with "Fistful of steel" he is making a point that in the right hands a microphone is a far more dangerous weapon than any gun to those in power. Guns run out of ammo eventually, knowledge can live forever.
