Legend has it when their label asked them how much they needed to shoot a music video for the song, they said $500, knowing they were going to film it for free at one of the band member's house. Supposedly they spent the whole $500 on drinks and weed and invited some friends over and shot the video 🤣🤣 capitalism baby

It's a song about a gun I always heard. From wikipedia: Black Betty" (Roud 11668) is a 20th-century African-American work song often credited to Huddie "Lead Belly" Ledbetter as the author, though the earliest recordings are not by him. Some sources claim it is one of Lead Belly's many adaptations of earlier folk material. " was a common term for a bottle of whisky in the borderlands between northern England and southern Scotland; it later became a euphemism in the backcountry areas of the eastern United States. It is also said that 'Black Betty' was a nickname for a certain type of musket, i.e. an old-timey gun with black paint. And in that regard, the phrase “bam-ba-lam”, as recited in the lyrics, is said to be intended to imitate the sound of gunfire.

The 'Black Betty' was an early musket but this song is about a moonshine still which was well used and had turned black. The child they are referring to was a smaller still made from black betty's spare parts. 'damn thing gone blind' refers to a bad batch of shine that caused temporary blindness. (or summin like that).

No live band, but. Back in the '70s as teens we lived in a subdivision but the house sat on about 1.5 acres. A hill & trees wrapped around 2 sides of the property. While my parents were out of town my brother, sister & I had a party. We put speakers on the house roof pointing down to the backyard to blast tunes like this. We told a few friends about it, that's all. That night by about 9 PM the place was swarming with teenagers. Both sides of the street was bumper to bumper parked cars. The pool parking lot across the street was full. I was talking to some people I'd never met & asked them how they found about it. Guy said a dude at the gas station up the street was giving directions. I didn't know anybody that worked at a gas station, much less the one up the street. About midnight the cops show up. Take me aside, wanted to know were my parents were. Uhhhh??? Gives me an hour to clear the place out or else. The next day we had to rake up the beer can tabs in the backyard. Also got a phone call from a lady looking for her daughter. I have no idea how she got our number or knew that something was on at our place that night. I swore we didn't have any daughters hanging around. Try that today & see how far you get. LOL

Yes, its origin is a marching cadence song from the revolutionary war. Black Betty refers to a musket and NOT a black lady The song even refers to Betty as a "thing" The "child" is the black betty's replacement. "Bam-A_Lam" is the sound of the musket firing .

The musket would have been a flint-lock musket with a black painted stock. The prison guards or soldiers were 'hugging Black Betty'. And when a updated model of the gun came out, known as 'Brown Bess', with an unpainted wooden stock, it was seen as the 'child' of the flint-lock musket

Released in 1977, but it's actually a remix of a 1973 single by guitarist Bill Barnett's previous band, Starstruck. The earliest known recording of the song is a 1930's field recording made in a Texas prison. It's a folk song that probably can be traced to an 18th century British army marching cadence. The legendary bluesman Huddie Ledbetter recorded the most famous version before this, and the band thought he wrote it. Barnett added the second and third verses but the Ledbetter estate wouldn't allow him to claim credit. Ram Jam lasted two albums. Their other work is decent blues rock, but not spectacular. Before Starstruck, Barnett played with a psychedelics bubblegum band, the Lemon Pipers, who had a hit with Green Tambourine.

Some very informations JUST FOR YOU AND ONLY (because of Mary J. made it be happen to enjoy it to you) 1. The Band only exists from 1977 - 79; and if you see, this outstanding video was only a Backyard-Party... 2. The Guitarist was William „Bill“ Bartlett - and he even STABS on his guitar-strings!!! 3. There was a history of this song. Listen to THIS: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bV6ZiYiEedKepMk (performed in 1939!) 4. There was a deeper story in the text that i learned here: "Black Betty" was a musket gun [or a bottle of whiskey in London among other meanings]. "Bamb-ba-lam"= the noise it made, The "child" was the musket ball. "Damn think gone wild" = not always accurate. "Damn thing gone blind" = missing it's target [like it viers off when shooting straight]. "She get's me high" = musket smoke. "So rock steady and she's always ready" = was reliable and not prone to failure. "Shaking that thang" = shaking the bottle or musket which... ..."makes me sing" = being drunk or marching song to a battle. Isn't this crazy? But it's all OK! Best Regards out of Germany
