Legend has it, when Ram Jam was getting ready to record 'Black Betty', their producer gave them a budget of just $500. So they spent $450 on weed and beer, and then recorded it in the drummer's back yard. 🤘😎👍

this is a cover of a military cadence from prior to civil war, where "Black Betty" was many things: in the first verse she is a musket that was very inaccurate due to lack of rifling, so the child (bullet) went wild (off target) and gone blind (the heavy smoke blocking vision after firing the weapon), 2nd verse is alcoholic drink of available for cheap to give to soldiers, and 3rd verse is an actual woman who "serviced" the soldiers at a local "men's club" in Alabama. "Bam a lam" is the reference sound of the musket firing and the beat of the singing cadence

This was a chain-gang song and 'Black Betty' was the prison whip, according to Wikipedia.
@tattoodude8946
@tattoodude8946 Жыл бұрын
@@drServitis Don't take info on Wikipedia as fact. If you listen to the song, you can hear the correlation to what the OP was talking about. "Black Betty" as a whip doesn't make sense if you just look at it from a logical and poetic point of view. Black Betty had a child that went wild and blind. How can that be made to fit a whip? "She gets me high" - how would a chain gang whip get someone high? Quite the reverse really...
@drServitis
@drServitis Жыл бұрын
@@tattoodude8946 In those days whipping children was common, as was whipping inmates. The song talks about the chain-gang as if they're children and the parent is Black Betty the whip; the whip made the inmates go crazy, and even blinded some of them. That's what I read on Wikipedia at least. And it doesn't make sense to say "Black Betty's Life Mattered," so of course the song is talking about a whip and not a person.
@tattoodude8946
@tattoodude8946 Жыл бұрын
@@drServitis Who said Black Betty's life mattered? What are you talking about? I mean I understand what Wikipedia said and your explanation, but where did you get that line? I also believe if you read the whole page on Wikipedia you will find they make reference to it also being a bottle of whisky and/or a prison transfer vehicle. I have also read in other areas about the musket reference. But again, I would not rely solely of Wikipedia as a 100% ironclad reference point.
@drServitis
@drServitis Жыл бұрын
@@tattoodude8946 So are you saying it's a blatantly racist song conveying that Black Betty's life didn't matter?? I agree the song would be pejorative towards Black Betty if it were talking about a person, but I've found nothing that says it was written to be racist at all. All I've found is that the song is about a non-human thing, a whip, as I said earlier. I haven't found anyone who says it was written to denigrate a person.

I'm glad people in this thread appreciate the song for what it is. There's people in the comments that want to cry racism and all this garbage and crap instead of just appreciating that this is a bunch of good friends that are not racist who decided to write some of their Own lyrics to the song and make a video in their own backyard having a freaking blast. That's all it is and nothing more. So to all the comments crying racism and boohoo and boohoo, chill the hell out and shut the hell the fuk up and go to another platform where you can spout off your racist hate. If a black guy that showed up during this video they either would have asked him to join in or have a beer or have a hit off this freaking joint. That's it doesn't more you idiots. This is not a racist video. I have an idea. To anyone that thinks this is racist band making a racist statement somehow, can kiss my non-racist ass. Go to a platform where racism should be given its proper light, because this is not one that you can grandstand on as something racist. Again, if you do you can kiss my non-racist ass

Listen to “Original Black Betty” recorded in 1933 at a Texas prison. Or Lead Belly. But the most haunting to me is James “Iron Head” Baker. The song goes even farther back. It’s considered a chain gang song. And in pre internet oral history was said to refer to the prison whip. The original writer is unknown.

This Ram Jam version of this song came out in 1977. The exact definition of what Black Betty refers to, has been the subject of much debate. Bill Bartlett, the lead singer of Ram Jam, said he altered the songs lyrics from Leadbelly’s version of an old prison song. I wrote about Betty Page, Bartlett said, she’s a pin-up queen from the ‘50s, she was my inspiration for the last two verses. His response to what he thinks the song means? As long as you’re having a good time listening to it, I don’t care what you think it’s about.

@@smithwesson7765 Maybe, but what most people don’t realize, if they bothered to take the time to research it, is that the song dates back to before the civil war; and there are dozens of different versions of this song with dozens of different meanings. So one persons meaning of the song, could be one of the dozens of meanings to the song. So EVERYBODY is right! And people will argue to the max that their version is the right one. The song has dozens of versions & meanings, whichever one you like, is the right version. Just leave it at that & move on.🎶

There's lots of legend behind "Black Betty" being an old, Revolutionary War, British musket that was less than reliable. The song is "ancient." Google will help. The reason it's so short is that the original version has been edited down for AM radio back in the day. The longer version has an amazing musical break you should seek out. It's quite satisfying.

You will find a version where it is claimed that the original singer in his later years is singing. Hi Britt, we were wearing those collared T-Shirts back in 72, 73, 74. I kept mine until 2004 had to move and discard much stuff. Had outgrown them as they were mediums and I now was extra-large.

I love this song in the movie "BASIC" with John Travolta during the dinner scene. It's a great movie, but the song really makes an impact. Black Betty was a big cannon.. child are the cannon balls, some go wild. Then, of course, there's the black one-shot gun.. always ready. And as others have said, verses were created depending on the singer and situation because it also was an old work song. I can see it also be about a woman. The longer version has great guitar lic.

You are too cute for words. This happens to be a song on a playlist I created for an aviation action movie I'm developing about a female repo pilot. Thanks for reacting to it.

Check out the much older version by Lead Belly. He was the singer that popularized it. Lead Belly was one of Kurt Cobain's (of Nirvana) major musical influences while growing up.
