This was there style from the start, this song is from their 1st album . They started the rock and hip hop mix. Back then many new rappers tried to imitate their style. Salt N Pepa used their style when they first came out, not the electric guitar but their rhyme flow. Salt N Pepa called themselves the female Run DMC

An extra funky F-R-E-S-H reaction 💯! Run and DMC were both 19 years old. They didn't change up their style, they invented Rap-Rock. This was their 3rd ever single released and first music video filmed. I see 👁👁you have reacted to Run DMC before: King Of Rock and Walk This Way. Rock Box was released as the third single from Run DMC's 1984 debut album: Run DMC. It was written by Larry Smith, Run and DMC. It was produced by Larry Smith and Russell Simmons. It sampled: Sucker MC's (Krush Groove 1) by Run DMC (1983). The song reached #22 on the R&B chart. The music video was directed by Steve Kahn. It featured comedian Irwin Corey (professor) and guitarist Eddie Martinez. It was filmed at The Danceteria night club in New York City. The music video became the first Hip-Hop music video to be in regular rotation on MTV. By May 1985, the single had sold over 750,000 copies. Following the popularity of Run DMC's previous two singles: "Hard Times" (1983) and "It's Like That" (1983), Profile Records head suggested to the producers and group that they should attempt to record an album as they already had four songs ready, and releasing a few more would not hurt them. Despite speculating low sales from the record label and the group not feeling that Hip-Hop was a music genre appropriate for a full-length album, they were given an advance to start recording. This led to Run DMC members Joseph "Run" Simmons and Darryl "DMC" McDaniels going through their rhyme book to develop new songs, one of which would become the single: "Rock Box". After having to wait for the Heavy Metal band Riot to finish their studio time so the group could record new tracks, the group and producers were influenced by their loud guitar sound and attempted to create a guitar based track. After Run DMC recorded their rhymes, Larry Smith developed the track, including inviting his friend Eddie Martinez to record layers of guitar solos to match the song. Upon the song's final completion, Run DMC were unhappy with the Rock sound as they assumed it would not be as guitar heavy and Profile Records president Cory Robbins was also not confident with it, feeling that it was "weird". The group gave a version of the song without the Rock backing to Kool DJ Red Alert to play on the radio station WRKS 98.7 Kiss FM, but it was Larry Smith's version with the heavy guitar riffs that became the more popular version. It was the beginning of the Rap-Rock music genre which is still in major effect in 2024. Critical Reception 🗣: Bill Adler described "Rock Box"'s reception as being loved by Rock music critics. Roy Trakin praised the song in Creem, calling it "a searing rap rocker" and that the guitar solo by Eddie Martinez "does for hip-hop what Eddie Van Halen did for Michael Jackson - bringing it to a whole new audience". On reviewing their debut album in August 1984, Debby Miller of Rolling Stone noted that Run-DMC style of "Trading off lines or even the words within a line, they get into a vocal tug of war that’s completely different from the straightforward delivery of the Furious Five's Melle Mel or the every-body-takes-a-verse approach of groups like Sequence." and noted that varied musical approach of their songs including "Rock Box" which "set their clipped, back-and-forth exchanges to a crying hard-rock guitar solo, melting rap into rock lite it's never been done before". Reviewing a Run-DMC concert at The Danceteria, Richard Grable wrote in the May 26, 1984, issue of the NME: ""Rock Box" is a stroke - the first guitar-fuelled beat box spawn of "Beat It" (1982) to mean anything". In the 1984 Pazz & Jop critics poll released by The Village Voice, "Rock Box" tied with Afrika Bambaataa & James Brown's single "Unity" (1984) at seventh place as one of the top singles of the year. Run DMC is regarded as one of the most influential acts in the history of Hip-Hop culture and especially one of the most famous Hip-Hop acts of the 1980s. The group helped to pioneer "new school" Hip-Hop music and helped usher in the Golden Age of Hip-Hop (1983-1992). The group was among the first to highlight the importance of the MC and DJ relationship and created the Rap-Rock music genre. The three members of Run-DMC grew up in Hollis, Queens, New York City. As a teenager, Joseph Simmons was recruited into Hip-Hop by his older brother, Russell Simmons, who was then an up-and-coming Hip-Hop promoter. Joseph Simmons appeared onstage as a DJ for solo rapper Kurtis Blow, who was managed by Russell Simmons. Known as "DJ Run, Son Of Kurtis Blow", he soon began performing with Kurtis Blow. Previously, Daryl McDaniels had been more focused on athletics than music, but soon began to DJ after purchasing a set of turntables. Russell Simmons convinced Daryl McDaniels to start rapping, and though Daryl McDaniels would not perform in public, he soon began writing rhymes and was known as "Easy D". Run DMC started hanging around Two-Fifths Park in Hollis, Queens in the late 1970s, hoping to rap for the local DJs who performed and competed there; the most popular one known to frequent the park was Jason Mizell, then known as "Jazzy Jase". Jason Mizell was known for his flashy wardrobe and B-Boy attitude, which led to minor legal troubles as a teen. Thereafter, he decided to pursue music fame and began entertaining in the park soon after. Eventually, Run DMC rapped in front of Jason Mizell at the park, and the three became friends. ****CONTINUE BELOW****

Following Russell Simmons' success managing Kurtis Blow, he helped Run record his first single, a song called: "Street Kid", The song went unnoticed, but despite the single's failure, Run's enthusiasm for Hip-Hop was growing. Run soon wanted to record again--this time with DMC, but Russell Simmons refused, citing a dislike for D's rhyming style. After they graduated from high school and started college in 1982, Run DMC finally convinced Russell Simmons to let them record as a duo, and they recruited Jason Mizell (who was now known as Jam Master Jay) to be their official DJ. The following year, in 1983, Russell Simmons agreed to help them record a new single and land a record deal, but only after he changed Easy D's stage name to his favorite car company, DeLorean Motor Company 'DMC', and marketed the group as "Run DMC", a name that the group hated at first. DMC said later: "We wanted to be the Dynamic Two, The Treacherous Two - when we heard that shit we was like: 'We're gonna be ruined!'". The group's name used Joseph Simmons's DJ name, DJ Run. It was combined with several letters from Darryl McDaniel's name. DMC can also stand for "Devastating Mic Controller". After signing with Profile Records, Run DMC released their debut single: "It's Like That/Sucker MCs", in late 1983. The single was well received, peaking at No. 15 on the R&B charts. The trio performed the single on the New York Hot Tracks video show in 1983. With the release of their debut album: Run-DMC (1984), they became the first Hip-Hop group to achieve a Gold album. Their debut album was followed with the certified Platinum record: King Of Rock (1985), making Run-DMC the first Hip-Hop group to go Platinum. The group's album: Raising Hell (1986), became the first multi-Platinum Hip-Hop record. Run-DMC's cover of the song: "Walk This Way", featuring the Rock group Aerosmith, charted higher on the Billboard Hot 100 than Aerosmith's original version of the song, peaking at number four. It became one of the best-known songs in both Hip-Hop and Rock. Run DMC would go on to achieve global success spreading Hip-Hop all around the world with sold out concerts-tours and popularizing the Rap-Rock music genre. They also appeared in films, on television shows and performed at notable charity events. In what was billed as its final live performance, Run-DMC closed the massive Hip-Hop 50 Live celebration on August 11, 2023, at New York’s Yankee Stadium, with surviving members Joseph “Run” Simmons and Darryl “DMC” McDaniels running through classics including: “It’s Tricky,” “My Adidas,” “Mary Mary,” “King Of Rock,” and “Walk This Way”. Jam Master Jay Passing 🙏🏾: Jason "Jam Master Jay" Mizell (January 21, 1965 - October 30, 2002) On October 30, 2002, Jam Master Jay, 37 years of age, was shot and killed at his recording studio in Queens, New York. Fans and friends set up a memorial outside the studio with Adidas sneakers, albums, and flowers. In the aftermath, Run DMC announced the official disbanding of the group. Jam Master Jay's murder remained unsolved until August 2020, with the arrest of Ronald Washington and Karl Jordan Jr. Both men would later be convicted for the murder in February 2024. A third suspect, Jay Bryant, was charged in May 2023, but was later arranged to have a trial which would be separate from Ronald Washington and Karl Jordan Jr which is scheduled to begin in January 2026.
