From the Alex solo to the end is just chills the whole time...this is one of many Rush songs that have those moments for 30 to 60 seconds that the emotions kick in, especially live🤘

One of my absolute favorite Rush songs. This one, and Marathon from Power Windows were a couple of Rush songs that kept me going through tough times. Knowing how you love to analyze Neil's lyrics, and how they touch you, I knew you'd really appreciate this song when you got to it. Neil usually wrote the lyrics, and Geddy and Alex would write the music. That's how the songs usually came together.

Rush had so many different phases & directions they went in. Some bands sound the same their whole careers & that's fine but I loved how Rush never stood still. Some directions were more popular than others but if they didn't try then they would never have been the band they were. They really were the epitome of that cliche of being 'true to yourself.'

@@SaeedReacts. When you reacted to Fountain of Lamneth, you wondered how old they were at the time they wrote it. That's a great question when a band has been making albums for 40 or so years. They were in their early 20's for Fountain, in their mid 30's for Time Stand Still. A lot of growth in between. For a different genre of storytelling, I suggest Marty Robbins's song Big Iron.

I saw Rush live for the first time on their Presto tour, which they released after Hold Your Fire. They played a few songs from HYF as well as older and new material. Met Center in Bloomington MN 1989 I believe. Seats were far from the stage, but it was awesome. Went to Roll the Bones and Counterparts concerts as well. Counterparts was floor seats 15 rows back, so had a clear view of the band.

Thank you for reacting to this; one of my favorite Rush songs! The lyrics always especially move me, but the music is amazing, as always. I had always thought the 1988 live version from Birmingham was the best live performance of this song, but this later career version might now be my favorite! It's such a moving song (and I do love Rush's keyboard era). As for writing credits, Rush made the decision early on to always distribute writing credits equally, to avoid the money squabbles that so often break up bands. Or, as Geddy said in an interview, they decided upon equal credit so "they would never have to have that conversation again.' If only more bands would follow their example! (Incidentally, 1987 was a special year for me, too; I was 10 years old and got my own personal portable radio and discovered the Top 40!) :)

This tour (Snakes & Arrows) was the 10th time I'd seen Rush live. I caught the tour in San Antonio, TX. This song is absolutely gorgeous (as is most of the very underrated Hold Your Fire album). Every time I see one of the later Rush songs live, I can't help but crack up over whatever random piece of something Geddy has behind him onstage to offset Alex's stack of amps on the other side. For this tour, it was a bunch of rotisserie chickens, tended by a stage hand in a gorilla suit at random intervals during the show. Loved their senses of humor, miss them being up there SO much. Rush remains my favorite band of all time...

Typically Neil writes the lyrics and Geddy and Alex write the music. Early on in their careers they decide they would split all royalties equally among the three of them. I love your reactions. You really get Rush! The writing credit is usually all three because Neil wrote the lyrics, but Alex and Geddy wrote the music. I think that Neil's lyrics here perfectly capture what makes introverts like himself and me so special: while extroverts are mainly driven to seek external validation, our motivation mainly comes from inside of us; and although Alex is commonly thought of as an extrovert, his feelings are introverted, as his passionate guitar lines here beautifully exemplify. For another performance taken from Hold Your Fire that you may like, I recommend Force Ten from A Show Of Hands. Have a great evening, and Rush on! 🎤 🎹 🎸 🥁 🎸 🐐 🐐 🐐

Thanks so much for posting this reaction. I am a huge Rush fan, and I have never heard this song. And to see it live, Awesome. And to see the Professor, Mr. Niel Peart working his magic on the drum kit. Wow. I need to listen to this song a few hundred more times. I was getting a video delay on this one. You hear it, then you see it. The human brain can work better the other way around better (seeing it then hearing it), That’s because the speed of light is faster then the speed of sound. The human brain can deal with this when watching (for example) a car door slam as a distance. All PC’s phones, tablets etc. need a knob to adjust this annoying issue with Video/Sound sync. Maybe they got it wrong on the 4K re-master, maybe it’s just my setup I have here. Sorry for the off-topic digression.

MASTERS of melody. For some reason, Hold Your Fire receives a lot of criticism and perhaps considered their "worst" album (along with Test for Echo). But I don;t know why. Maybe because it has Tai Shan on it, but that's not a bad song, just maybe irrelevant to most people. Hold Your Fire has Turn the Page, Mission, Prime Mover, Force Ten, Second Nature (as well as Time Stand Still, which many people love, but I am not enthused about)
