I'm from Oakland and roughly the same age as Sheila E. For many years while I was a kid, the nightclub 6 or 8 blocks from my house had a sign saying Pete Escovedo and Band performing tonight. As a teenager, it changed to say Pete and Sheila Escovedo and Band. Being underage, I never got to see them perform and while Sheila E must have been going to school the same time as I was, it must have been in some other neighborhood in the area as i never saw or met her. I was still thrilled to see her have success and to hear her on the radio, especially as it was a really good song.

Sheila E. is actually a multi-instrumentalist although she mainly known as a percussionist and drummer. She's played drums for Prince on several of his tours. Not sure what all instruments she can play, but I know she can play guitar too. Most of the musicians from back tended to be able to play many instruments. Special shout out to Eddie M., who is the guy playing the saxophone here and has been a mainstay with Sheila her entire career. You guys should check out the album version of this song, it's an extended version that is 9 minutes long.

Im a massive Prince friend (on a question about his fans,Prince said: I dont call them my fans, because fan is short for fanatic, and thats not something i want to call anyone. Interviewer: What do you call them then? Prince: Friends, they go out of theyr ways to buy my music,go to my concerts....they are my friends!) And it was through Prince i discovered Sheila-E,they both collabed together at concerts (pretty much part of his band at one point),i believe she also signed up with Princes own record label when he went independent. And this is by far one of my favourite songs! And between us,man did i crush on this lady. Prince was swarmed by beautiful women! Do you want a video with them together? Prince - U Got The Look. Its actually with Sheila-E, Sheena Easton & Cat Glover (his dancer) plus many others. There you can see why i crushed on her,the way she comes walking beside the others. LAWD HAVE MERCY! You can hear alot of Prince in her songs, the same with Apollonia and Apollonia Six. Apollonia also had a soft voice, maybe not the best singer out there lol,but Prince managed to turn her into a musician for awhile. Not only in Purple Rain the movie lol. Chaka Khan also has abit of Prince in some of her songs. All theese artists were really close back then,Prince always shouted them out.

Sheila E, still at it, still performing , still looking so beautiful and sexy , comes from a famous family including her father Pete Escovido , musicians and percussionist , then she worked with the likes of George Duke in the late 70’s , then Lionel Ritchie in the early 80’s, then Prince produced this album in the mid 80’s , and she forever became a part of Prince’s empire , performing , songwriting, producing , and the drummer in Prince’s studio and touring band for years. She produced and performed a tribute concert for Prince a few years back. I love Sheila E, she’s is so energetic and vibrant and living and loving life!

THIS IS MY JAMMMMMM! My English Teacher, (whos a huge Prince Fan) got me on Sheila E, and I thank her every time I listen to Sheila. The reason why it sounds like Prince is because Prince co-produced and co-written a lot of her music early in her career. Sheila played the drums in his band. Prince and Sheila actually dated for a while, but they broke up. They stayed friends and shared many stages before Prince's passing. She is still performing to this day! Great reaction, Asia and BJ. Prince all over!!! But Sheila had held her own working with him....and then some! A beast of a woman on percussion!!! When she goes at them drums, congas and whatever it's pure joy to see and hear! One of my first musical interests was Santana - She's not there, from the Moonflower album, like 1978 I guess, I was 8 at the time. Crazy guitar work and percussion. One of the percussionists was Pete E(scovedo), Sheila's father. Flashforward to 1983/'84 with Prince - Purple rain......my favorite artist ever!!! And with him a whole entourage of artists....like Sheila E(scovedo).....things came full circle or something. She also played on George Duke albums with her father.
