Sheila E was a very popular drummer (jazz and R&B) before working with and for Prince. She even toured with him and they were briefly engaged. Prince produced her 1st 2 albums and like with most of his proteges, he also wrote songs and played multiple instruments. This song flew up the charts so fast that Sheila asked her siblings and cousins to be in the hastily filmed music video. Shiela was surrounded by some of the greatest Latin musicians of the 20th century. Her father was the great American Precutionist "Pete Escobedo" and Shiela had played the congas in his Latin-Funk band "Azteca" when she was quite young. Her Godfather was the incomparable "King of the Tambalas, Tito Puente, and a good family friend to her father was " Celia Cruz " or The Queen of Salsa. Her talents as a Precutionist and overall musician caught Prince's attention and the rest is funkadelic history. Not to mention her beauty, sex appeal and stage presence. Awesome reaction to a huge hit by one of the most talented woman percussionists (known as the “Queen of Percussion” and I saw her in that role in the George Duke Band, a few years before this came out. And as many have already said, she came by it honestly, as he father, Pete Escovedo, was a master percussionist and eventually hired by Carlos Santana for the Santana band), even before anyone had ever heard her sing. In case, you get to read this comment, that saxophone that went straight out like a clarinet, is a soprano sax. One of the greatest masters of that instrument as well as the tenor sax, was my favorite musician and composer, Wayne Shorter, who played with Joni Mitchell, plays the solo on Steely Dan’s song “Aja”, and was co-founder of my favorite band of all time, instrumental jazz-rock fusion band, Weather Report (to whom someday, I hope you’ll react. Maybe start with their biggest hit, “Birdland”. There’s also a vocal version with lyrics by jazz harmony group, The Manhattan Transfer, who I also think you’ll love, as they combine rich harmonies with jazz and crooning). I loved Wayne and got to see him many times with Weather Report back in the 70’s and with his own quartet a bunch of times in the 2000’s. He just died last year at 89. I got to talk with him at one of his gigs I went to see here in San Fran about 9 years ago. I went out to see him 5 times in one week as a celebration of my birthday that year. I hope you get to see this and react to some Weather Report music. You will love them. It’s like if Pink Floyd, and Miles Davis, and maybe Earth, Wind and Fire had a baby that played mostly instrumentals. Lots of keyboards and synths.
